During the later part of first year, young Harry has had the companionship and protection of a big, black dog (Sirius in his animagus form). During this same stretch of time, Harry has been growing closer to a certain Potions Master, who finally adopts the boy.
He tells Harry, though, that he may keep the dog, but he'll have to be neutered. Unfortunately, Sirius missed this conversation...
