    Well, dang! Amazing writing...

I made the mistake of binge-reading this about 6 hours straight: only because it is quite heavy at times but wow! Excellent work. I started crying several times...

Oh my goodness, I'm lost for words. It must have been ages since you wrote this story and I'm really late to the party, but reading this was a mindblowing, epic journey. The slow build of AU!Severus' and our!Severus' eventual acceptance of the other Harry made me smile so much. Makes me really warm and happy to see that Harry was eventually accepted and loved by the AU's Severus and Lily.

What really got me was our!Harry's attempts to bond with Lily and "be" her son. That just about broke my heart. The last chapter where Harry acknowledges that his mum died for him and that was the mum that belonged to him, that moment really touched me inside. JKR said that the Harry Potter series is hugely about loss. I lost someone close to me a few years ago (she was like a mother to me) and the number of times I fantasised about seeing her again -- I wouldn't have cared if it was a different version of her. Harry is lucky he got to meet his mum, even if she slightly different, and a little bit damaged.

"But she was never really mine. My mum is here. Was here."

In the final chapter where he accepts and acknowledges that his Mum, the Lily Potter that completely belongs to him, is truly dead and gone - that moment turned me into a sobbing mess.

"It never felt real before. That she died."

I was trying to puzzle out what this line meant. Still not entirely sure if I understood it the way you'd it, but I interpreted this "before" to mean - "while he was in the other AU, it didn't seem real that she had died", as opposed to "before he travelled to the other dimension, her death never felt real to him". (I imagine that growing up as an orphan would have hammered the reality of her absence into him) Both interpretations, however, still packs an emotional punch. The idea that Harry couldn't accept their deaths for 14 years and he was still hanging on to the hope/fantasy that he could see her again and protect her :((((. And the idea that Harry just wanted to live in his fantasy world (the alternate dimension) where Lily Potter was alive and he could protect her. Oh Harry, accepting that someone you love will be lost to you forever is never easy. I'm happy he got his "bonus" time with the other Lily, but it's also so good to see that he's able to separate them and honour the memory of the Lily Potter who bravely died for him. I hope he remembers his time with this Lily again.

Sorry for the super long comment. This story really touched me inside. I think it explains grief and loss perfectly. Denial, delusions, sadness, and acceptance -- I'm just glad that Harry and Snape have each other. The ending was bittersweet and hopeful (sorry I know i'm gushing a lot) - but it was really lovely and so, so beautiful. Thank you for writing this. I enjoyed every word.

    Author's Response:

Hello! Apologies for the extremely late reply. I left the fanfic world for a few years (but I'm back now). Hopefully you are still on the site and will see this. You took so much time to comment that I couldn't leave this comment unanswered!

Yes, I was struck by the idea that if Harry and Snape could just see that's it's possible for them to be a family, they might come to accept how much they could help each other. Plus I love Harry and Snape interacting, and wanted as much of that as I could write. :)

What I was thinking with the "never felt real" line was that Harry never knew his mother before - he knew about being an orphan, of course, and the practical realities of not having parents, but he never knew his parents beyond photographs and stories he was told. He didn't have a relationship with Lily. I think loss feels different when Harry has known the person, known her smile and her personality and all the things she could have been if her life hadn't been cut short. The loss is less of an abstract concept - it feels more real.

But overall, you got what I was going for there - that Harry (and in some ways our!Severus) had to let go of the fantasy of Lily they had in their heads, so they could accept what will never be and open their hearts to each other, to what could be.

No need to apologize for a long comment - long comments are a delight! :) It's wonderful to hear thoughtful reactions to the story. This story grabbed me by the ears and insisted I write it - it was the first longfic I ever wrote, which I was not planning on doing at all - and it's good to hear that it affected you reading it the way it affected me writing it. Thank you for your thoughts!

This is such a unique story. I haven't read anything like it before. And the ending: brilliant, hopeful, joyful. I hope harry potter and snape can have a relationship.
