This story definitely brought tears to my eyes-- I lost my cat, Cricket, loving companion for the past 10 years at the beginning of September. By my count, my family has has 13 dogs and 22 cats through the past half-century. Death is inevitable, and it always hurts, but the memories keep me smiling through the tears. Cricket came into my life just after Becky left it (aged 21 years/7&half months)-- Cricket had a microchip showing she'd come from Hawaii, & I live in Virginia!!! She'd been living wild long enough that her former owner could not be located (failed to notify microchip company of move to mainland), so we adopted each other. My vet thought Cricket was about 3 when she became my pet; probably about 13 when she died. In my opinion, Harry should be ashamed to have downgraded Ginny's loss of her family's cat! Cats are every bit as good as owls! ;-)

I, too, have lost a dear canine friend, years and years ago, although in his case, he just laid down to sleep one day when he was about 13 years old and didn't wake up again. I've never been able to bring another dog into my home, but a line of kittens have joined the family over the years, to be loved and grieved in their turn.
I do hope that this story helps your niece to deal with her grief over time. One day she, too, will be able to sit and talk about all of the lovely and happy memories of her puppy, as Harry and Severus did in this story.

Okay, where was the tissue alert?? Hedwig is so often overlooked, and this was a lovely way to honour your niece's puppy, and to remind others to remember the good times had with departed friends.
Oh, MAN did you make me bawl my eyes out with this one! Awesome job, and so very appropriate. I've always felt that JKR did Hedwig a real disservice when she didn't even have Harry grieve for Hedwig after all she'd been to him.
