Great chapter! I loved the tension and the pain in it, as well as the bitter hope. I wanted to say that before I said my next comment, which I actually want you to take as a compliment to your writing from Severus' perspective (though he would never see it this way).

Yes, I understand that she was hurt by the mudblood comment so she did not accept his apology, but how long did she think that Severus was going to hold out against any of the other deatheater Slytherins? The boy probably felt like he had no hope and why in the world shouldn't he join the deatheaters? From what I understand even purebloods like Regulus did not realize that the deatheaters were merely muggle and muggle-born killers?
Sorry, I didn't mean to rant. Sometimes Lily can appear very... not hypocritical... but not as comprehending of the depth of feeling of love Severus has for her. It annoys me. She doesn't like him alone and encourages him to find someone else (perhaps like she did?). Yet Severus probably feels (on top of the fact that Lily is the love of his life and anyone else would pale in comparison to her) as if he doesn't either deserve love, can't be loved, and or if he did find someone, that it would be unfair to them because they would always be compared to Lily.
Sorry again. But I think it is a real compliment to your writing that you can make someone feel so passionately towards Severus and angered at Lily, though I would assume that was not your intention.
