Wow. I was wondering what on earth Severus could have done to earn that medal, especially in light of the fact that neither of the actual VCs from the Falklands war survived, both the medals were awarded posthumously. But this is quite in line with the traditions of the Victoria Cross. Well plotted.

Author's Response: Hi Catherine! I am glad that you are pleased with the sequence of events that led to Severus' VC. I spent night after night brainstorming on the reason for it being awarded, and I was always a little worried someone would not think it realistic enough. Thanks so much for your review!

Sounds like a big reunion is on the cards - would be good for Severus to have someone to talk to. Wonder if Harry is going to spring a surprise on his dad.

Author's Response: Hmm, quite. What is Harry up to anyway? Thanks so much for reviewing, rosina. :)

Wow, Ben and Severus should have loads to talk about. Maybe Ben can even help Severus get some real help. Merlin knows, the Ministry didn't have anything lined up to help him get back to daily life after war.
Great chapter! I look forward to reading more!

Author's Response: Yes, talk about a lot of years to catch up on! Thanks so much for the review! ;)

This is quite frankly, the best Severus fic I have ever read. I've liked everything I've ever read of yours, but this one tops them all. The amount of research and thought you put in this really shows without sacrificing the character development. The realism of thought, feelings, and reactions are exactly right. I have wept as I've read about Sev's experiences and felt a bare fraction of what he must have felt from the descriptions of the battles.

I suspected that Harry's new friend might possibly be related to Ben and am very happy to find that it is true. I look forward to a reunion between the two men who survived such horrors.

Thank you for writing this. As a U.S. veteran of the first Gulf War (though, thankfully, I did not personally see any combat) and foster sister of a two-time recipient of the Purple Heart it is wonderful to find a thoughtful, realistic portrayal of the effects of war on the people who are sent to fight it. God bless you!

Author's Response: Thanks so much for reviewing, dancingkatz! It is so good to hear that you are enjoying the story, particularly considering your familiarity with the army. That was what worried me, that the people who were involved with war, fought in one, or know people who have served would not find it to be accurate. So it is especially good to hear positive comments from you! I am glad that the emotional aspect is reaching you, because I figured that even if my portrayal is not perfect historically (Unless you're there, how can it possibly be?) I wanted it to feel somewhat close to what it might have been like. I am glad you are looking forward to a reunion! You are welcome for this story, and thank you for reviewing. God bless you too, and your family as well.

I hope you're still offering tissues! Again I love your work, and can barely wait for next Monday, now what is Harry planning on that devious mind of his? he might be a Gryffindor, but he's also half Slytherin. Keep up the good work Whitetail!!!

    your friend, Sev

Author's Response: *Hands over tissue box*. Great to hear you are still enjoying it. Oh yes ... Harry and his devious plots. Half Slytherin indeed! I suppose you'll just have to wait and see. ;) Thanks for reviewing, Sev!

Heart breaking. I'm in tears again. How do you do this to me? Update soon.

Author's Response: Hmm ... well, I keep doing this to you either because I'm evil, or  ... nah, who am I kidding. I'm clearly evil. Great to heart that it is having a strong effect on you. ;) Thanks for reviewing, cara-tanaka!

i almost teared up in this chapter...
    very heartfelt.
and oddly enough my great grandfather was a pilot in the second world war.
i hear stories like this from my grandmother a lot.

Author's Response: Hi, thanks for the review! I am glad that you found the chapter to be from the heart. :) A pilot during WWII. Wow, that must have been a tough job! I suppose some of this would feel familiar to you then.

First off, it was a good decision to take a step back from Severus' story in the previous chapter and bring in a little more of his family life.
His story of how he was awarded the medal begs the question of what makes a hero? Severus was able to see a way forward, and act upon it, when others were panicking or doing nothing, and there was an element of luck as well. Is that bravery? Well, Harry certainly thinks so and I imagine that his reaction is what will count most to Severus.

Author's Response: Hey rosina! It is nice to know that you enjoyed getting a glimpse of Severus' family life last chapter. I am glad that the way Severus got his medal is making you ask what makes a hero, as that was exactly my intention. Heroisim is so much the product of perspective, and one man's heroic act is not necessarily the same to another. Great to hear from you!

Wow, this is right on target. Harry is hero-worshipping, like any young child, but his steadfast belief in Severus' bravery in the face of certain death brings comfort Severus has long denied himself.

Author's Response: Hi! Thanks so much for reviewing! I am glad you feel that it is on target.

what is it with you and making me cry dammit!!!! Love this story, it always hits me right in the feels, makes me wonder what I would have done in his place, trying to picture the turmoil his mind obviously was in. I hate war, always has because really I would be sick if I actually loved it, but a part from stating the obvious, I hate it even more now, seeing all the suffering it brings. It reminds me of a poem by Lord Alfred Tennyson which I think you should read if you haven't already, it's called "Charge of the Light Brigade"

Author's Response: Here, have a tissue! I really appreciate such a detailed review, and you sharing your ideas and opinions! Hmm, Charge of the Light Brigade. I do believe I read that a long, long time ago, I will have to read it again - thanks for suggesting it! As for you, I would certainly recommend you read Dulce et Decorum Est by Wilfred Owen, which is based on the old saying "Dulce et Decorum Est, Pro Patria Mori" which essentially means how sweet and fitting it is to die for one's country. It is my all time favourite poem, so hopefully you will like it. You may find that For Valour has similar themes! Anyway, thank you again for reviewing, and I am glad that this story is hitting you right in the feels. ;) The idea rather hit me in the feels too.
