I like how Snape is processing everything he’s seen and experienced so far in the Dursleys abode. I appreciate that he’s seeing Harry’s home life clearly and is putting the pieces together, in line with his keen observational skills as a spy. I also like how the wards are weakening over time, which feels rather realistic as far as wards go.

Author's Response: Yes, I decided to give Snape a break from Marge so he could marshall his thoughts regarding Harry's situation. He'll need to verify his suspicions, but will Harry cooperate?¿? 😁 Many thanks for reading and reviewing!

Aha! Knew it had to be something rather specific. I like that you have the wards weakening as Harry becomes less and less able to think of the place as home. Nice touch.

Author's Response: Yes, I thought it would be a natural consequence of Harry's psychological and emotional state, rather than an abrupt failing of the wards. Because he really doesn't have anywhere else to go, the wards remain intact, but they're not all that strong. Thanks for reviewing! 😊

Snape certainly has the measure of the Dursleys. He'll surely be reporting more back to Dumbledore than the state of the wards.

Author's Response: Absolutely! I get annoyed with stories where Snape fights against the reality if Harry's home situation chapter after chapter before he finally gives in and admits Harry isn't a spoiled little prince after all. Right from the start, Snape is putting two and two together to get the four which he'll use to confront Dumbledore. Here, in private, we even see him wincing at the violence used against Harry, something we'd never suspect if he had his mask firmly in place. Thanks for reviewing!

    Very interesting thank you

Author's Response: Snape needed some down time to process everything, and I wanted to show the transition of his ideas pertaining to Harry. Thank you for reviewing!

Love it! Great thoughts, and the business about the wards and Snape checking them makes a lot of sense!

Author's Response: Yes, Dumbledore is concerned, and he doesn't want to alert the Dursleys that they are under observation, so Snape has to utilize his skills as a spy under rather trying circumstances. He certainly gets an eyeful...

Nothing like seeing is believing. I think you hit the delicate balance between Snape's intelligence and logic joining the dots and his emotional investment in viewing Harry as an arrogant miscreant very well. He strains to defer judgment on a situation that's pretty obvious, but in a way that makes sense for his character and history, and I like that he's also been unhesitating in confronting Harry (or getting what he needed from Harry's mind) while still struggling to reconcile it with what he wants to be true. THe accidental magic with the mirror at Marge's slurring Lily was boss and delightful and makes Snape's reticence toward Harry all the sadder.

Author's Response: I so loved having the mirror crack! Also, I believed Snape needed some quiet time to reflect on all he had learned before facing Harry once more. It's never was to revise deeply-ingrained beliefs, but when faced with an undeniable truth, Snape rises to the occasion and makes the effort to get past the image of James Potter's face. I've read so many stories where Snape refuses for way too long to accept the idea that he has been wrong about Harry. I wanted to show that an intelligent, logical individual wouldn't fight against reality when it was staring him in the face. I'm glad to see your agreement!

Although a plot-light chapter, it was interesting to see Snape's thoughts on the matter. I always enjoy a good amount of Snape calling Harry spoiled, but it works logically in this story for him to realize that's not the case. I always thought the Dursleys had a guest room for marge as well as the room for dudleys extra toys that serves as Harry's usual room. As another aside, I find the little details make the story that much more realistic. Light mention of Snape's salmon soufflé or Harry's pride over a dinner well-made really make the story feel real, rather than simple A->B storytelling.

Author's Response: I haven't reread PoA recently, so I can't recall if canon had a guest room for Marge, or if she went into Dudley's second bedroom (e.g. Harry's bedroom). But the film version of 4 Privet Drive did not have more than 3 bedrooms total; I freeze-framed the interior and exterior shots to match up windows, and the house simply wasn't big enough to have a fourth bedroom. For my plot purposes, I decided to go with 3 bedrooms in order to have a reason to put Harry back into the cupboard for the duration of Marge's stay. And yes, Snape needed time to reflect on all that he had learned from observing Harry's interaction with the Dursleys, revising some of his preconceived notions along the way. Now, what will he do with that information...

It sounds like this has been an eye opener for Snape. And since he, as Marge's boyfriend, is a valued guest, Harry will likely be treated even worse as they try to keep him out of sight.

Author's Response: Yes, Snape is definitely having to revise some of his previous assumptions about Harry after observing life at the Dursley household. Just one evening in their company and he already has a lot of information to collate. Wonder what he'll do with it...
