that's the thing about illicit affairs by MellarkandArt

Series summary: the typical Harry Potter with a terrible childhood story (okay maybe just a bit worse than the usual) but he's a Hufflepuff and Severus Snape is lowkey his adoptive parent. The main story is Illicit Affairs and I am not planning a sequel but there is a potential for one-shots in this universe.

Neglect can be one of the most painful forms of abuse, being ignored by your guardians when all you want is love hurts. No one seems to care if Harry lives or dies so he spends a lot of time wandering around Little Whinging on his own. His friendly neighbor seems to think that this is dangerous. If only someone paid enough attention to Harry to tell him that his neighbor is a little too friendly...

“Do you like it?” Severus asked, feigning nonchalance. “I know it’s not the same color, but they were all out of brown…” “Are you sure they were out of brown or are you just incapable of buying something in a color other than black?” It was still a touchy subject, then. OR Severus may have kind of, sort of, inadvertently yet possibly purposely murdered Harry's teddy bear. So he does what any decent Potions Professor/Psycho Guardian Angel would do and replaces it, obviously. Whether or not it's enough for Harry to forgive him remains to be seen.

“He seems to be under the assumption that since the Dursley’s are no longer his legal guardians, he has nowhere to stay this summer.” Severus scoffed. “And I suppose an orphanage would be a better option as opposed to myself.” Albus shrugged casually. “Is he aware that you’re even an option?” “Well of course he…” Severus trailed off, frowning. “Why wouldn’t he?” “You’re not his legal guardian,” Albus offered bluntly. “While you have done a lot for him, you are certainly in no way responsible for his welfare.” Severus glared. “ Legally speaking, no, but otherwise of course I am responsible for him! I am the one who took him from that wretched home, the one who has been there through nightmares and medical visits and-“ “My, my, Severus. Could it be that you are jealous?” *** in which Severus has to address the reality of his relationship with Harry with more than just words.

Harry knew exactly what he was going to do before he did it, but that still didn’t mean that it was a well thought out or intelligent move in any way. “Thanks, Dad.” You could hear a pin drop. Harry was holding his breath, Susan went stiff beside him, everyone was staring, and Professor Snape had paused in his steps completely. *** The news of Harry's adoption spreads, and Harry (with a little nudge from his peers) experiments with names.

“Severus,” Harry had asked, “what’s a Death Eater?” “Where did you hear that word?” Professor Snape questioned sharply. Harry reeled back a bit, surprised by the raised voice. He didn’t say it out loud, because he wasn’t totally stupid, but he thought that was a rather daft question to ask. Hadn’t they both been there when Mr. Malfoy had referred to Severus as one? Hadn’t they both seen that paper in Professor Dumbledore’s office? “Er, well… it’s not a word, is it? It’s two.” Harry hears the phrase "Death Eater" being thrown around a lot lately, especially in reference to his new adoptive father, Professor Snape. He finally asks Severus what it means, and isn't terribly pleased to learn the answer.
