About me:

I stumbled into Harry Potter fanfic looking for something to read after years of loving the books. Even after HBP, the idea of Snape mentoring or somehow becoming Harry's father/father figure is intriguing to me. I think that his is a very interesting character with unexplored depth in canon.

As for me, well, I'm working on getting into graduate school for creative writing, as that is one of my bachelors degrees and what I enjoy the most. I do write fanfiction, and am currently writing my first try at Harry Potter, even though I'm hopelessly American and I wouldn't want British characters to sound that way. (Knowing my luck and where I'm from, I'd have Harry speaking Southern without too much effort!)

My hobby is restoring My Child dolls from the 1980s and making clothes for them. It's kind of fun to exercise artistic skills that I don't often use anymore. Otherwise, I just write. And it's whatever strikes my fancy at the moment, fanfiction in various fandoms or original fiction.

Prompts by Bratling
Summary: Pre-Hogwarts, Dudley gets sick with leukemia, so Vernon and Petunia send him to Saint Jude's. Harry is blamed for Dudley's illness. When someone notices his bruises, they whisk him away for testing, only to discover the Dursleys' abuse. Of course, it's reported, and Harry gets taken away and somehow ends up adopted by Snape.

Summary: Harry uses the invisibility cloak while at the Dursleys' and Snape somehow finds out.

Summary: Harry ends up back in the Marauders' era, makes friends with Severus, and James realizes the pranking possibilities with an almost identical twin around.

Summary: Snape never turned spy, and the Potters survived, but their oldest son disappeared. Fully embracing the Dark, Severus is offered an opportunity that he can't refuse--the ultimate revenge on James Potter and his cronies--raising the stolen Potter heir for Voldemort.

Summary: Set during HBP, Harry never casts Sectumsempra on Draco. Instead, Draco manages to crucio Harry and Severus stumbles over Draco torturing Harry. What are the consequences of this for all three of them? Will this lead to Severus learning some home truths about Harry?

Summary: Canonically, Harry was an abused child. Rowling didn't go into it much because she would then have to actually deal with the issue rather than pushing it aside, but the fact remains--the Dursleys neglected and abused Harry. The question is--why in hell did nobody notice?

It's understandable, really, that Dumbledore either marginalized or ignored the abuse. The same with Mrs. Figg. It's an age thing. Child abuse wasn't recognized as a problem before the late seventies, which means to Dumbledore's Victorian mindset, it's "just discipline" and doesn't count. Mrs. Figg would have considered it none of her business. Again, it's the age in which she grew up. Mrs. Figg would have considered it a, "family issue" and thus, "private business".

What is unforgivable is that none of his teachers seemed to notice his problems and none of the neighbors reported it, either. It would have been absolutely obvious to teachers just in comparison between Dudley and Harry! Just their wardrobes should have rung warning bells. By the 1980s, mandatory reporting laws were on the books, (at least in the US--I know they exist, but not the exact timeline for the UK laws. I'm doing a bit of assumption here) and Harry should have been taken away from the Dursleys. Considering that Dumbledore never checked up on him, except via Mrs. Figg, in the real world, just from the contrast between Dudley and Harry, Harry would have ended up in foster care. This is made even more true by the educational push there was about the issue during the era.

So, my challenge is for a story in which someone, be it a teacher, a neighbor, etc, notice Harry's plight and do something about it. This can be before or after Hogwarts, but my only stipulation is that it can't be anyone from the Wizarding World. It's also your choice how Severus finds out and gets involved--except it can't be at Dumbledore's behest. It can go for pretty much any category for the relationship between Severus and Harry, but I'd like Severus to remember that above all, he was Lily's best friend since childhood.

Summary: Both Lily and Harry survived that Halloween night. Lily and Severus eventually get together, but Severus still hates Harry for his resemblance to James. Will Lily stay with Severus with how he treats her son? Or will Severus see Harry for who he is and learn how to be part of a family?
[Report This]
Summary: Lily and Severus were best friends through their childhoods and Severus was abused by his father. Statistically, approximately 10% of abused children become child abusers themselves. Canonically, we know pretty much where Severus stands in regards to that. What if Lily left custody of Harry to Severus before the Dursleys and it turned out to be a terrible idea? What if Severus's deplorable treatment of Harry went a little further? Bonus points if, for once, Petunia and Vernon are at the opposite end of the spectrum and try to actually take care of Harry and take him away from Severus.
