- Typical for Snape, getting angry at Harry for not being grateful when the poor boy was just confronted with a very tooth-y, weird looking creature.
Snape is human, too, he has to know how frightening his appearance is to humans!
I can't wait to find out whether Harry will draw some conclusions from the fact this merman knows his last name. :)

- Severus will find it hard to continue hating Harry. But I guess the absolute number of people he hates will remain the same, seeing as Chen and Dumbledore do their utmost to compete for the position as most hated person.
I wonder ... how is it possible that Severus is the only person who appears on the Marauder's Map as the person he is impersonating instead of his true name? Is it because Dumbledore is in on the deception and waved the Elder Wand to make it happen? Hmmm.
Author's Response: yeah I hand wave it away at some point by saying dumbledore cast some charms on snape to reinforce the charade. and you're right they absolutely will compete for that position! once snape figures out that harry isn't who snape thought he was
Harry would do anything to not go back to the Dursleys. Even if it meant giving Snape a chance. So, with a shred of hope inside his heart, he approaches Snape with a special letter.

- Awwwww. No wonder Harry doesn't mind the "dire consequences" it might have if he doesn't shape up.
It is guaranteed to be better than the Dursley standard behaviour!
(I wonder if part of the reason for Harry's lack of trying in school is that the Dursleys are never happy with him no matter how hard he tries. If hard work never pays off, you get rather demotivated.)

Severus Snape just wanted to enjoy a brief respite over the Christmas Holidays away from students...maybe catch up on his potions journals or lose himself in brewing, but Petunia Dursley showed up on his doorstep with a cat and that all changed.

And Petunia is "charming" as ever.
The only thing I didn't like was Snape's misogynist insults. I know he's not likely to be better behaved than Molly Weasley, but ... I don't know, it makes me a bit uncomfortable.
After the events at the Department of Mysteries in June—and all that came after—Harry finds himself once again stranded at Number Four Privet Drive. With only his own thoughts to keep him company, he takes to writing letters to the only person he thinks can help, if only he were still alive to do so.
As it turns out, though, sometimes help can arrive in even the most unexpected of forms too.

I can't wait to see how that will turn out.
Since you mentioned needing a beta: I'm not a native speaker, so can't help you with your English grammar, but I am pretty sure that the British don't celebrate Thanksgiving, since it was invented in the US. A Christmas dinner would make more sense to me in that context.

Instead, he finds himself stepping off the Hogwarts Express at Kings Cross Station at the beginning of the Christmas hols. His parents greet him with hugs and Harry is drawn into a loving Christmas holiday at Godric's Hollow.
They have been dead for years but now they are alive-- and it's the best thing that has ever happened to Harry.
It is the week after Christmas, 1991, and Harry Potter gazes into the Mirror of Erised, unmoving. He will die, soon enough-- unless something is done-- for the Mirror has him in its power.

I have observed in the modern world a worrying tendency to treat children as tiny adults and let them make decisions, even decisions that come at expense of their future health and wellbeing, the full consequences of which they are not yet equipped to understand.
In short, people increasingly forget that good is not the same as nice, and nice is not the same as good, and giving a child what he wants is not always the right thing to do.
Rowling explored this with Dudley, who always got what he wanted for a long time, and as result is not only incredibly spoilt, but also worryingly overweight.
Harry being trapped in a fantasy that makes him feel happier than he ever felt before seems to me like the kind of situation many modern adults would refuse to interfere with, citing that he is old enough to know what he wants, or speculating about him harming himself when he learns the happy fantasy is not true.
Severus is pretty much the personification of "good is not nice", so it seems fitting that he is the one to alert Harry to the sad truth and try and get him out of the mirror.
I like the idea of the mirror having access to information that the one looking into it does not have - thinking back, it did show Harry's whole family, even though Harry probably had not seen his whole family gathered at any time in his life.
Must have been quite a shock for Severus to meet a James Potter who is nice to him.
