This is great. I love cheerful!Harry and the banter between the two of them is excellent. A very well-constructed story.

After Harry talks to Dumbledore in Deathly Hallows, he takes a little detour to Spinner’s End, back before it was Snape’s house, back when it belonged to a woman named Eileen Prince. Snape couldn’t be angrier that Harry is his father.

I was liking this, but I don't buy that Harry would be this cruel just to ensure that things went the way they already had. (And Eileen has no reason to go along with it either. 'He will die a hero?' Really? What sort of motivation is that for Eileen to follow his instructions?) Harry's seen enough of time travel to know that what has happened, has happened, and there's no need to force it.

I would rather have seen him trying to stay but unable to stop himself from leaving, then Eileen feels forced to marry Snape (who isn't yet such a bad sort as portrayed here) because of the stigma of being an unwed mother (still huge in the early 60s). She is the one who casts the glamour, for the sake of the neighbourhood gossips, but Snape knows the child is not his and is jealous, and this ends up poisoning any chance of a decent marriage. Severus and Harry could have figured this out together – after much angst, of course – after Harry's return and revelation. Same end point, but everyone stays in character.

Author's Response: I fail to understand why you thought this was a necessary commebt to leave on a fanfic that is ten years old.  It's not like I'm going to change it to suit your tastes.

Post OoTP. Alternate Timeline. Harry's had a wretched summer. To top it off, Dumbledore insists he continue studies in Occlumency with the dreaded Severus Snape. Will he and Snape learn to get along?

I know it's a long time since you've updated this and you're probably not even on this site any more, but this is one of the most coherent and dramatic stories I've read in a long time. I'd love to see how it goes from here! You've done really well showing how damaged Harry is from his upbringing – always trying to please people and always interpreting whatever people say in the most rejective way possible. I want to see how Severus comes to terms with this.

Also, why not have Dumbledore use his Elder Wand to mend Harry's wand, as Harry does in canon?

    Loved this!

Sequel to A Christmas Gamble. After filling in for Father Christmas the previous year, one would think Severus and Harry would have a peaceful holiday, but all that went out the window when the two of them got talked into taking over the business. It seems like insanity, and it probably is, especially after the workshop burns down and they’re forced to try and find a way to sneak a hundred Christmas Elves into a makeshift workshop in Hogwarts. With twelve days until Christmas, and no time to waste to replace the lost gifts, it’s going to take one big distraction.
Good thing Severus and Harry have a knack for pulling pranks.
All the two can hope for is that burning down the workshop is the only black mark their names will get on the naughty list, because if the staff find out who is behind the pranks, Christmas will truly be ruined.

This was fantastic and very funny. Loved prankster Severus!

I would have liked to see a little more detail on the reveal to Dumbledore. I wanted to see his reaction. Perhaps just:

    "– however did you know?"
    "I am Father Christmas."
Harry stared at Snape in surprise.
Dumbledore smiled. "Of course you must seem so to Harry in his moment of need, though I am surprised to see you embrace such sentimentality. I would like to know, however, how you knew to rescue him."
"I mean it. I am Father Christmas. Literally. Potter is my assistant. I found him bruised and locked in a cupboard when I went to fetch him for our Christmas Eve duties."
"Severus? Are you feeling all right?"
"No, Headmaster," said Snape with impatience. "We have just returned from delivering hundreds of presents on a sleigh pulled by reindeer. We are both extremely tired and would like nothing more than to go home for Christmas."
Dumbledore looked a little green around the eyes. He looked at Harry, who glanced at Snape before replying. "It's true, Sir. We've been working together since last Christmas."
Dumbledore sat back and, with an apparent effort, managed to summon up a small twinkle. "Well then, I suggest you tell me the whole story."

    –––––––––

Oh, and please can we have a sequel where Harry is forced to take Veritaserum and asked questions about Snape's 'other job'? It can be an attempt to reveal Snape's loyalties as a spy or for some other reason, but Harry's talk of Snape being Father Christmas leads everyone to conclude that the Veritaserum isn't working and so the secret they are trying to get Harry to reveal is safe.

Author's Response: Haha, I love your version of the conversation! Yes, more detail would have been better, I agree. Oh wow - I do love that idea with Harry having to answer questions! That's a brilliant idea for a follow-up, haha! I probably won't have the time to write it though these days, I confess. Thanks for the detailed review!

Snape, of course, would no sooner let them play games in class than adopt Harry -GoF pg 342.

Harry never expected to be adopted—especially not by Snape. Harry hates his new father, and the feeling is mutual. But to the outside world, they have to pretend otherwise, or Harry could end up in very deep trouble. Is anyone that good at acting?

Title: Chapter 8: Curtains Up 28 Aug 2017
Reviewer: Avaya29 (Signed)
I'm loving this story. I've wondered for a while what it would be like to have the legal adoption come first before any relationship-building. I would have preferred Snape to have his canon background, and I'll explain why below.

This is actually a surprisingly satisfying place to end the story, but if you wanted to continue you could have Snape reveal that he knew Lily as a child, before Hogwarts, and that she was his best (only) friend; and Harry believe it's part of the backstory they are concocting. This misconception goes on for a bit as they continue to bond, before Harry finds out that Snape is telling the truth. Harry becomes angry with Snape because he *could* have come to meet him when he was eight and they *could* have had this good relationship all along (and he could have had relief from the Dursleys sooner). The denoument is when Snape confesses to Harry that he wishes he had too.

    But hey, I like fluff.

    Author's Response:

I do plan to continue this, just got a bit stuck on the next chapter. I'm glad you like it.

If you recall, Snape has already said "we say that ... because your mother was an old school friend", which Harry has taken to be part of the story, which would lead up to the scenario you described (which isn't far away from what I had planned, but what I had planned was a lot vaguer, and would you mind if I used your idea?).

I often detract from canon for backstory for several reasons. It keeps me on my toes, and I like to explore alternate ways the characters could have ended up where they do. (I've got some fics with much more intricate backstories in the works.) I like to surprise readers. I feel also that when you write lots of fics revolving around the same characters, you become in danger of writing lots of similar conversations, which also cover the same ground as so many other stories by other authors. I like to make my stories stand out a bit more by adding a twist or two. Plus I have some issues with DH and usually ignore HBP in my fics anyway to allow more flexibility.

Having said all that, I usually include some form of Severus/Lily backstory, because I like the couple and to me it wasn't something from DH, it had been a fan theory I believed in for years beforehand. But unless my stories actually take DH into account (which this one does not), then the backstory of them is not the same as canon.

I hope I've made sense and not confused you! Anyway, thanks for reading!

Severus Snape is cursed with an affliction that has him human by day and a centaur, named Ajax, by night. One night, Ajax rescues a lonely eleven-year-old Harry Potter and a bond forms between them. They meet each night from that point forward. As Ajax, Severus learns more about Harry than he would have ever wanted to learn. But without revealing himself to Harry, how can Severus help this orphaned boy?

I'm not normally a fan of creature fics, but this has potential. I like the idea of Severus developing two independent relationships with Harry. There's a big potential problem that stood out to me though. Winter in Scotland is going to be very hard for Severus.

In late October, sunset is at about quarter to five (full dark by half past five). I take it the feast started very early? By mid-December sunset will be at about quarter to four, and sunrise at half past eight. How has he managed in previous years?

The other thing I thought of is that that werewolf from chapter 1 really needs to be revisited. Otherwise it's clear it was just a plot device.

Author's Response: Thank you for your thoughts! And yes, winter has always been a problem for Severus, but after years of suffering with this curse he knows what to do. I’ve already thought about it. And thank you for mentioning the time frames in Scotland. That did escape my mind. In the US, sunset isn’t until 5:30-6pm late October and by December around 4:45ish - at least in NY. I was going off of those times - how careless of me. And Severus manages these times by having his classes later in the day and eating when he can, not necessarily at meal times. I will have to remember these times for later in the story if I’m to be geographically correct. Thanks for the insight! And we will hear of this werewolf again and why it was so close to Hogwarts. I won’t give out too much detail now, so just hand in there. Thanks for your review!

After little Harry Potter runs away from his relatives’ home for the sixth time, Albus decides something drastic must happen. Instead of sending a friendly witch from family services like he had done before, he sends Severus Snape in hopes of scaring the boy into staying put. But when a blizzard interferes with plans, Severus learns why Harry keeps running away and a change of plans ensues.
