Wonderful story. I love how the relationship between Snape and Harry is slowly, hesitatingly, but surely being built. Harry's doesn't understand how an adult can care about him yet still discipline him and Snape doesn't truly understand what needs disciplining and how. But I think they will both learn.
I do find it interesting that Snape is so insistent about being respected as a teacher when he really has not done anything to give Harry reason to do that. Yes, Harry should give the position respect, but Snape has not earned respect as a teacher. He has not imparted knowledge well to his students, he has not treated them fairly, etc., etc. He can be respected for his knowledge and for his service to the "Light". I think sometimes that in real life those who really do not deserve respect are the ones who must threaten and punish like Snape does in order to get a semblance of it.
But, anyway, great story.

Okay, wow. Your story is AMAZING. I can't remember if I've stopped to tell you that. You're an excellent, consummate author and reading your work is always an inspiration.
Your chapters are always poignant, but I don't know...something about this chapter just really tugged on my heartstrings. Yanked on them, perhaps, because when I finished I was actually crying. That last page or so...wow. Has anyone ever told how amazing your Harry is? He's very different, but somehow in spite of that he's still our Harry. That huge heart of his, and his sense of right and wrong, and his refusal to give up, ever, no matter what life throws at him—you've captured that SO WELL.
That last little bit, "Something twists in his heart, the part that used to be reserved for Dumbledore. It feels like an ache. But if something is empty, then it shouldn't be able to ache." completely undid me. I've never been through anything like Harry has been through
(the comparison is laughable, in fact) but a large portion of the difficult times I have experienced, were caused by someone I trusted...betraying me, I guess, though I use that in a loose sense. And those lines capture perfectly the way I feel about pretty much all of them—I still ache (as you put it) sometimes. As Harry is finding out, disillusionment doesn't always remove your own affection...
This was an excellent chapter. The conversation between Harry and Severus was marvelously well written. Thank you for not having their relationship be all smooth sailing. They have years of mutual animosity to deal with and while they've each made some progress there is still a long way to go. I especially liked Harry verbalising how he feels and what he expects in regards to the way people treat him. When he said "I mean, usually its people I hate who punish me. I expect that. But people I like usually don't. So this is...different." he really hit the nail on the head.
Thanks for another great chapter and as usual I'm looking forward to the follow-up.
Good chapter! I'm glad to see that they settled things somewhat between each other now. Hope you can upadate again soon!

Absolutely awesome story! I love the way you've developed Harry and Snape. They're totally different than usual. I like the edge they both carry. This chapter leaves me wanting more:)

Hmmm...I'm honestly not sure how I feel after reading that. I'm not certain how I feel about Snape, I suppose. I feel rather angry with him, maybe. I really didn't like the way he was 'daring Harry to complain' about his sore arms. There's nothing wrong with Harry saying something hurts him, even if it hurts because he was completeing a detention. Was the aim of the detention, to hurt him? I mean, honestly, hasn't the kid been abused enough, especially of late, by Umbridge? I don't know. That makes Snape seem so much more like he used to than about someone who could ever really care about Harry. Harry has a right to be so conflicted and even angry at him. Snape is more confusing than he even I can figure out. I wanted them to talk more. I felt like Harry was trying but darn it, I wanted him to say more, to demand that Snape say what he wants them to be. They are driving me mad. My stomach was in knots the entire time. Brilliant, of course. Much so. But still, I am conflicted, and sad, and wishing very much for a new chapter. Right now. Sigh. Thanks for such a wrenching chapter. Even though I'm depressed now. :oP

This is really powerful emotionally.
It can be a bit disconcerting at times when the narrative drops into present tense, but most of the time I don't notice because the grip and flow of the story is simply so strong that everything else fades in comparison. You've done an excellent job. I'd love to see more if you ever get the chance.
I love your story and the interaction between Snape and Harry is so realistic. I hope that Snape does eventually become his guardian; he needs to get away from the Dursleys.
Harry is very confused about his relationship with Snape right now, and you make is so realistic that he is not sure of where the lines are anymore.

It was nice of Snape to give Harry a copy of that photo, but it seems things are always turning between the two. Things flip from neutral to war-zone real quick, poor Harry feels confused about where things stand.
Harry's talk with his friends seemed to help though. Ron cracks me up, his comments are too funny ^_^ Hermione shocked me with ripping the photo, but she was making a point and the photo could be repaired, so it's alright I s’pose.
I still have to wonder what's up with Dumbledore, where'd the old coot disappear to? lol.
P.S. So long as you say it's not turning into slash (thank goodness, since that's not my cup of tea!), I believe you :)
