Reviews For The Poor of God
Where to start? I had SO many favorite lines I'm sure I can't list them all. Snape's combination of fury yet tempered with such control while dealing with Gibson had me gripping the desk. LOVED this: Dumbledore's eyes pierce him. "I made you Head of Slytherin House for a reason, Severus. I have never known a moment's regret for it." (Thanks Dumbledore, for giving Snape the praise he'll never get from anyone or else or in high enough amounts). I really enjoyed Snape's interaction with his House. I just never got enough info from the books what I wanted to know about Slytherin House - what attributes make them great (not just a bunch of potentially dark wizards), because truly there must be some. Between his conversation with Gibson and the house assembly, I think I'm starting to get a feel for it. Favorite warm and fuzzy moment: Snape is not sure what impels him, but he finds his hand drifting to the side of Harry's face, to trace the jagged pink line of the sealed cut marring the side of his pale face. "So it did," he says quietly. (Now Snape, don't curse me for thinking how sweet that was. I won't take it back.) And Snape finally cracking that icy facade to show Harry he was concerned....Awwww! (Okay, he's really going to curse me now). We all know it is merely a little crack and I don't expect that icy heart to melt anytime soon. Branwyn's not nearly done having fun with us yet and for that I'm happy. I want to ride this train for quite awhile. And Snape called him "Harry" instead of "Potter" at the end. I love it when he does that. I'm begging for more too! Wish I could give more than 10 frogs.
As usual, excellent chapter. I particularly liked Dumbledore's comments to Snape.
It's so good to see Snape finally letting himself care for Harry, and show it, too. Harry's response to Snape's admitting that he was 'concerned' (not terrified, of course) was so sweet. How could Snape resist giving him a great big hug right then and there. I suppose he'd use some silly excuse about Harry's injuries... Snape's handling of the attackers was spot on. I loved the conversation with Gibson, and I certainly would never want to be on Snape's bad side. I can almost feel sorry for Greenleaf and Etching. Almost, but not quite. I do hope we'll get to some of their punishment. Looking forward to more!
While I'm at it, can I just say how great Professor Snape is generally? He's not that much older than me, but he acts years older in the way he has learned (though necessity) to balance the validity of his emotions with the need to think and act strategically. I would not want to be on the wrong side of him, but there's nobody I'd rather have by my side in a dangerous situation. OK, got that out of my system, and on to reviewing the chapter! It was masterful, as ever. My favourite line: "What else should I have felt but—" agonizing, gut-clenching terror, "concern?" I'm pants at articulating the reasons why I love this story, but suffice it to say that it has me totally gripped, and once again, a 10-frog rating isn't nearly enough. Thank you, Ally
I almost felt sorry for those poor idiotic Slytherins. Facing Snape's wrath is so, so scary. But, he handled it really well, didn't he? I would think that they all deserved to be expelled, but having to deal with Snape for the rest of the year could be just a much of a punishment as going to Azkaban, especially without the Dementors being there. I really liked the added touch of having to have the prefects escorting the other 7th years to meals. I spent 5 years in the Army and they have the same mentality of punishing the whole unit for the mistakes of one person. It is definitely a determent (did I spell that right?) to more misbehavior when you have the wrath of your peers to deal with as well. I loved the last scene with Snape, Harry and Luna. Snape is definitely letting his guard down more and more, isn't he? That he would let Harry see him touching Luna's head is monumental. And, the fact that he admitted he was concerned about Harry? Well, that's just a miracle, isn't it? Harry's response to that was too sweet. Loved the chapter. Hope real life is good to you so you can bless us with another one soon. Thanks...
My favorite passage from this chapter: "I would wish it to be clearly understood," he continues, in a soft, deadly voice that rivets the attention of every person in the room, "that while a certain degree of House loyalty is expected of you, I have no use for the sort of muddled thinking that confuses rash, emotional, self-indulgent indiscretion with cunning and subtlety." Not only does this bring out the true colors of our favourite professor, it casts a light on the Slytherin house that I always imagined was there and was always saddened that J.K. Rowling didn't show us. There's a complexity there that's in many ways more beautiful than the brave idealogy of our dear Gryffindors. In sum, thank you, thank you for this beautiful portrayal. I cannot wait to read more. Author's Response: Branwyn: She wants to know how you feel. Snape: Homicidal. Vaguely nauseous. Branwyn: About Harry. And Luna. Getting attacked. Snape: I stand by my original answer.
Author's Response: Obviously the Dursleys need to come back into the story. They will. I don't know if what I have planned for them will ever be enough to satisfy you guys, but...yeah. Definitely not through with them.
Also he cares about both Harry and Luna, it is heartwarming indeed. Great restraint on his part, though when he is alone he can't help but show how much he cares. Thank you for the awwww moments! and update soon! |
