Another wonderful chapter, and it was well worth the wait. I like that you had Snape give in a little bit to his anger -- going after the attackers before calling Pomfrey. He handles every piece of the situation with aplomb, from the Slytherins, to Dumbledore to Poppy. I'm not usually a fan of Snape and Harry stories that bring another student into the mix (usually Draco), but you've done so well here that I am definitely curious to see what kind of impact Luna's presence will have.

    Now for my favourite bits:

"They attacked and nearly murdered two students whom they knew to be under my explicit protection. For that, Mr Potter, you may believe me—there is no hole on earth deep enough to hide them from my wrath."

    I love baddass Snape.

"You have attempted to commit the crimes of a man. You will face me as one. On your feet!"

    Niiiice.

"Snape is not sure what impels him, but he finds his hand drifting to the side of Harry's face, to trace the jagged pink line of the sealed cut marring the side of his pale face. "So it did," he says quietly.

Harry stares at him, eyes wide and round. Rather to the embarrassment of both of them, Snape suspects, Harry's eyes brighten suddenly, as though with tears, but he blinks and looks away again, and nothing more comes of it."

LOVE this part. Just LOVE. I can totally imagine it.

"There is no chance of being apprehended in his folly, if folly it is. In the dimmest, most hidden chambers of his own mind, he is beginning to entertain doubts on that score."

Ha. As we here at potionsandsnitches like to say -- just give in now, Severus. It will be less painful that way ;)

    Author's Response:

I know what you mean about other students coming into the mix---it can deflect the attention away from the central relationship (and it doesn't help that it's usually Draco, I can't think of anyone I care about LESS than Draco sodding Malfoy) but my love for Luna, and Luna with Harry, and Luna with Snape, is just so deep and pervading that after she showed up in the last chapter of The Guiltless I couldn't NOT make her a part of this story.

Badass Snape is desperately fun to write.

Snape can't give in now! The story would be over!

What else should I have felt but—" agonizing, gut-clenching terror, "concern?"

hehe - Snape, you softy, you! You CARE! With a CARE BEAR STARE!

This was a very riveting chapter. I'm glad those two boys were expelled. What a shame, wasting your future on a petty revenge. I felt bad for them, even while I thought they needed to be punished. I'm glad you portrayed them as 17-year old boys who had made a horrible decision rather than hardened Slythern criminals.

    Author's Response:

*falls to the floor and DIES OF LAUGHTER*

OH MY GOD. Who was that...wasn't there a Grumpy Bear? Or something like that? Oh my God. That is the great crossover Snape allusion since someone rewrote the Dr Seuss song as "You're A Mean One, Mr Snape".

"Even with my intervention, it is doubtful she will ever fully recover."

I really hope that's not the case, and that Luna will fully recover.

This was a terrific chapter. There were many different relationship and interpersonal dynamics to handle, and you did that all very well. How Snape relates to his Slytherins was extremely well-written - the mix of rage and weariness when confronting the attackers, and then his speech to the house as a whole. I've always wondered how Snape would play the part of Death Eater while also effectively disciplining and reining in his students, and I see that here, how he can manage them and even guide them away from death eater habits and mindsets without giving up his hand. It's all very masterful (*giving Snape a big round of applause*)

I like his dynamic with Madam Pomfrey too. I like how their conversation is both easy-going and biting; they fall into a kind of rhythm with each other that makes me smile. And then him and Dumbledore... they have this relationship that's both formal and also quite intimate (in a platonic way of course). Snape has this formal, old-fashioned adherence to certain protocols - of how to behave to young ladies, and to his superiors... it's like these rules of conduct help prop him up, in a way.

And then I loved the end, with Snape tending to his children. Seeing his tenderness at the end there, in combination with his effective discipline and understanding of house dynamics earlier... well, it just goes to show that he has the makings of a good father in him. Now, if only he'll realize - even outside the deepest chambers of his mind - that it isn't folly to care for people...

Anyway, well-done! Can't wait for the next chapter...

    Author's Response:

Luna's fate has yet to be finally determined. ^_^

I'm glad you enjoyed the dynamics at play when Snape interacted with his Slytherins, as that gave me some difficulty. "Masterful"---I like that word.

And I'm glad you like his relationship with Madam Pomfrey, I am trying very hard to make her a real character and not just a part of the scenery.

You're absolutely right about Snape strict adherence to old-fashioned rules helping to ground him. He clings to the little, humanizing things that are available to him.

It's not caring about PEOPLE that bothers him so much as caring about *these* people...

This chapter was so beautiful. Snape in a vengeful rage, Snape caringly caressing two abused kids he cares for. Beautiful scenes. Well worth waiting for. Not that we enjoy the wait. hehee Now, about those dolls. Do tell. You make dolls? May we see them?

Author's Response: Thank you! Nothing is more fun to write than Snape in a vengeful rage. My dolls are located here: doll-shop.livejournal.com

Seriously, you almost killed me with this chapter. Probably because I nearly had a heart-attack (induced purely by joy, I assure you XD)

So once again a long journey into the land of capital letters ...

OMG SNAPEY. SNAPEY SNAPEY SNAPEY - YOU ARE AWESOME XD XD XDDDDDDDDDD XDD

    "agonizing, gut-clenching terror"

If those four words didn't cinch the entire chapter for me (is cinch even a word? : ) then I don't know what did. Oh wait, I do XD

"Snape is not sure what impels him, but he finds his hand drifting to the side of Harry's face, to trace the jagged pink line ..."

OMG. I'm reverting to redundancy here, but OMG. SNAPEY I LOVE YOU.

"Do not thank me, you idiot boy," Snape says, and Harry cannot help recoiling at the harshness of his voice."

This chapter was made of such awesomeness I don't even know where to begin. Firstly, Snape makes me melt. I am the biggest human puddle of goo right now. I'm all ... puddly and gooey XD And it's YOUR DOING!! *shakes fist*

I love love LOVE Snape/Harry interactions, Snape/Luna interactions, Snape/Dumbledore interactions, Snape/Slytherin interactions ... probably mostly Snape/Harry/Luna (ummm, wow, that is kind of kinky and weird. I'll shut up now XD). I love how he picks her up, and puts the blanket over her and opts for physical contact more than magic, almost as if constantly drawn to reassert that she's alive ... *le sigh*. Plus FREAKING HELL SNAPEY, JUST GO ADOPT HARRY ALREADY. Honestly. You would probably go through the same sort of emotions, but at least this way you don't have to pretend to not like him/be distant. Then again, if you adopted Harry the rest of the story would probably be like, "They signed the adoption papers, looked into each other's eyes and melted into puddles of love for each other - finally ... they had a FAMILY XDDD"

(Can you tell it's the middle of the night for me?)

I don't know if anyone has ever told you this but your vocabulary is like ... whoa. In the world of fanfiction it's like Michelangelo's David, or Botocelli's Birth of Venus (OMG that's not even how you spell his name XD) or something really awesome and famous and one-of-a-kind. Like Uluru or Sydney Harbour Bride ... completely classic and timeless and awesome and - I'm going to stop now before I get a brown nose XD But seriously. You are the only author I know who can get away with "nuances of honor" completely realistically. I love you and this story for it XD

Apologies for things that are spelt wrong, etc ... I am tired. Ecstatic, elated, deliriously happy that this chapter came out ... but tired nonetheless XD

The world nees more SNAPE/HARRY LUFF. XD

    Author's Response:

You know, I've...never heard of Uluru or Sydney Harbour Bride, which is probably shocking of me---I was an English major and all that. ^_^ But anyway, I'm glad you appreciate my big, fancy vocabulary. Occasionally I worry that reading too much Dickens in my formative years has had a detrimental effect on my quality of life in adulthood. How often does any normal person get to say "nuances of honor" in day to day life, after all?

And yeah, Snape COULD adopt Harry now, but wouldn't you rather have another million chapters while he agonizes over it first?

This chapter was well worth the wait! The interactions were brilliantly written and the drama stayed intense in what could have been an anticlimatic follow-up to a cliff hanger. Severus' deepening attachment to both Harry and Luna is depicted extremely well. I hope your life goes smoothly and a new chapter can appear soon. (I mean, I hope it goes smoothly for your sake, AND I hope a new chapter just happens to come along soon also, lol!)

Author's Response: I'm glad you didn't think it was anti-climactic! I worried about that. And your good wishes, whatever the motivation behind them, are gladly received. :-)

Wow, every chapter just gets better and better! The scene between Dumbledore and Snape was just right--Dumbledore's not going have a yelling match in front of everyone, but he gets the point across.

It was great how Snape communicated wit Harry with his eyes, and I know it must have been awfully hard for him to stage that little scene with Dumbledore, too. Harry took the brunt of his shame and anger, but maybe if Snape stops to think about it, he'll realize that that's how he's made Harry feel in class all these years, and he wasn't just putting on an act.

The scene with the Slytherins attacking Harry and Luna took my breath away, and I was really worried for Luna.

Thank goodness Snape gave Harry the portkey, and Harry remembered it. I loved how when the kids appeared, Snape was already out there calling for Harry. Poor guy, he must have been scared to death for them. He just might insist on Harry moving in after this.

Now I'm very concerned for Harry--no telling what kind of injuries he's suffering from now. How am I supposed to wait for the next chapter? Please update soon!
