Reviews For The Poor of God
More, please? :D
This is a fantastic chapter!! I love Luna - I love Canon!Luna, and I think you have captured her voice perfectly!! I've always thought Harry+Luna would be a much better couple than Harry+Ginny - not that I'm hinting of course, I was just kind of getting that vibe!! And I love the idea of Snape watching out for Luna in his own snarky way!! And now Snape's going to watch out for Harry too!! I love the idea of this story, and I'm looking forward to seeing where you take us!! Scarlett
I especially liked this paragraph: "And somewhere along the way, while looking out for Potter, he had ceased to look at him. The most he could see through eyes perpetually narrowed in dislike was that the boy's resemblance to his father had only increased over the years. He never looked Potter in the eyes if he could possibly help it."
This is starting out really good, and Luna is so wonderful. I just love the way you write all the characters in a fresh, non-cliche'd way that still leaves them feeling very canon-like. I enjoy reading letters from one character to another, so this chapter was really great for me! Looking forward to more... :-)
And I'm very excited that it looks like it might be in the form of an epistolary, well, not novel, but story, anyway, as I enjoy that form, and it seems very appropriate, particularly to Snape, for whom the relative distance of letters seems likely to prove helpful. He's really very brave, but also, shall we say, rather risk averse with regards to emotion; he also values control, and precision, which are so much simpler in the written form than in messy face-to-face conversation. One minor error, probably a typo : "I expression my own thanks," should I assume, be 'I express', unless Snape is deliberately offering Harry the opportunity to correct him. :) I love Harry's letter; it's exactly the sort of thing I can see him writing in an attempt to sound like Snape, and it's particularly lovely how he slips back into his own voice when he gets to the parts that are most real. As I think I've said before, your greatest strength is characterization, and it seems to me you capture a fundamental truth about Harry's nature, which is that despite everything that's happened to him, despite the fact that he has every reason to understand that the world is *not* fair, he retains an innate sense of justice, and a tremendous capacity for acceptance of others, even those who are 'not very nice'. Bravo, too, for your Snape, and his (somehow completely in-character, though never demonstrated in canon) willingness to step outside his comfort zone. It's one thing for him to try to protect Harry from outward threats of physical harm; that's a clear obligation even if only due to his position as a teacher, and Snape is, if nothing else, a man who takes his obligations very seriously indeed. It's quite another to think, as he very clearly does, that he would prefer not to encourage a deeper relationship with Harry, and then to answer the letter anyway; that takes tremendous courage, and I think your clear understanding of how absolutely central courage is to Snape's character is a large part of what makes your version of him resonate so strongly. It frankly amazes me how few writers really do seem to get that, despite the fact that's it's *quite* clearly stated, by both Harry and Dumbledore, *in canon,* besides being blatantly obvious on even the most superficial reading. And Luna! I like Luna very much in the books, but I'd have to say my liking was more akin to Ron's--appreciation for just how *funny* she can sometimes be, apparently without meaning to. But your Luna is simply fascinating (and again, completely in character) in the way she effortlessly and without apparent intent juxtaposes whimsey and wisdom. I'm really looking forward to seeing more of her, as well as seeing how the relationship between Snape and Harry will unfold. Thanks for writing. Sincerely, Annette
I LOVE LOVE LOVE the snark between Snape and Harry! I LOVE those letters they write to each other - I can't read to Harry's reply! "The Guiltless" was a brilliant piece of work, and I'm so glad there's a sequel! Thank you for bringing me so much joy with your writing, and I eagerly await your next chapter!!!
