Title: Chapter 51: Silence 02 Apr 2008 9:22 pm
Reviewer: cathyrf (Signed) [Report This]
I have to start this review with my favorite line of this chapter, spoken to Remus by Severus:

“This is not an adventure,” Severus interceded automatically, his blue eyes narrowed.

You see, I disagree with Severus. It IS an adventure, at least so far (or I thought so until the last paragraph). Around our house, we define an "adventure" as an exciting set of events one can be expected to live through. When the outcome is not so certain, it turns into an "ordeal." We'll have to wait until the beginning of the next chapter to find out if OE crossed the line. Evil cliffie....

I was really looking forward to this chapter. So many new variables to explore! So far, our guys' interactions with each other and the world have been confined to the walls of Hogwarts, Grimmauld Place and the safehouse. How will they handle outside pressures and dangers outside those walls from unknown forces? When they have to completely rely on each other in this still rather new relationship, will their bond stand the test? Depending on adults to get him through dire circumstances is still completely new to Harry, and I don't trust his reponses yet. I can't wait to see...

I immediately loved Sev being such a "dad" when he warmed up Harry. He is so in tune with what Harry's current state is, he usually knows what that is before Harry does! Love it, love it.
And their easy banter (including Harry's cheekiness) was fun, and natural so completely in character. Like so many other reviewers, I have to agree wholeheartedly on how brilliantly you write their dialogue. It's almost like I "know" them personally...you've so brought them to life on paper.

Wow...Severus gave Lupin (gasp) a compliment? Whoa. I am so glad Severus isn't angry and can see WHY Remus went to Albus and is grateful for it. Closer and closer to buddyhood. They just might go take in a baseball game (oh, soccer in Britain) if Voldy doesn't kill them or something sometime soon.

STICKING CHARM? Oh, that a riot. And Harry whining about being drug along like a sodding puppy. ROTFLMAO. I wouldn't like it any better, granted. But I had visions of them stuck together like siamese twins. It's a funny image. And Severus knew about the toilet. Oh gosh, I surely needed a good giggle in the mist of the building tension. I'd be lying if I said I'm not worried about our boys. (bites nails)

Harry's fainting worries me too. We don't know why he did exactly, but could this happen again at some terribly inopportune time? I shudder to think.

The Dumbledore/Harry hug - sigh. That moment brought a tear to my eye much like it did Albus. It was SO Harry, even after their little talk a few minutes earlier. I know we have a character death coming soon. I hope it's not him. :-(

OK...our three cohorts in crime (as I'm now referring to polyjuiced Sev, Harry and Remus even though Remus thinks they are "three pretentious lads on holiday", I like mine better) crack me up to no end. Their banter is a riot. Harry calling himself a "bloody wanker." Hee, hee hee. You can just see and hear the teasing going on between Remus and Harry and Sev trying SO hard to stay serious (but he was smiling inside). So were we!

Tonks likes apparating? Why am I NOT surprised.

My blood pressure started rising as they entered the house. The tension was definitely mounting! I was surprised to see Bill show up (is he our expendible ensign? OE will get the reference.) Harry completely creeped me out, knowing what happened in that room involving Voldy.

Sev couldn't help but notice, as did we, how compliant Harry was being in all situations. Can he keep it up? We're about to see next chapter, as he was forced behind the curtain. I want Harry to stay behind the curtain, I think he probably will, but Harry IS Harry and I can never be sure. Harry, your dad will kill you if you don't.

Ack! What happens now?? You are evil, my dear OE, for leaving me biting my nails to the quick!

For once, I don't have a hug for anybody. I'll save it and give a double hug to whoever needs it in then next chapter. I have a really awful feeling somebody's going to *really* need it. (Gulp!)

    Author's Response:

Expected to live through?  We'll see.

LOL  You sound like a movie announcemer:  "Will their bond stand the test?"  ROFL  I don't know but I guess we'll just see, won't we now?

Sev is pretty well tuned in, isn't he?  I love him that way as well.

Their banter is one of my favorite parts to write, especially a cheek Harry.  He amuses me.  LOL

And wow, that is quite the compliment.  "It's like you know them."  I feel that way as well.

Yep, Severus gave Remus a compliment.  *gasp*  What is this world coming to?

Um, baseball?  ROFL.  I don't think you're gonna get Severus to admit to any such thing as friendship with the man.

I'm glad you like the Sticking Charm.  Hee hee.  Let's see if it actually works for longer than 5 minutes.

I won't even go into the fainting again.

Dumbles is all forgiven...well, understood a bit better anyway.

Sev was smiling inside... LOL  I love that man.

Oh goody.  You were meant to creeped out.  *waggles eyebrows*  Just why, well you'll have to wait and see about that.

No hugs?  Wow, things are getting dire indeed.  And I bow to your compliments on the state of my evilness.  :o)

OOHH!! Yay! I don't know if this is now my favorite chapter, but it's defiantly up there! Great job...it was dramatic and tense the whole way through.

I was really expecting a lesson in exiting the Floo at the beginning there...but I guess it's just that all those kids are clumsy. Actually, did Ginny fall when she left the Floo that last time? Hmm...I don't think so. She's got talent, that girl.

Tee hee!! I was dying when Sev was explaining his newly defined relationship with Remus. It was great!...except that it was all because Sev wanted to commit suicide.

Ok, so since the locket and the cup are in the Order's possession, I'm guessing that they are going after Gaunt's Ring...but it's in the Riddle house? Ok. More on that later.

I really liked the whole exchange that went between Harry, Dumbledore, Remus, and Sev before the "trio" left...it was so sad. It seemed as though this was the actual final battle, that they wouldn't survive a little horcurx hunting. Granted, none of them were doing to good in DH, either...but, I don't know. Perhaps I'm just thinking they were being a little too dramatic with this all......but that could be due to my lack of knowledge on what they're about to do, what the dangers are there...Harry never asked those questions and perhaps he knows the information after a discussion with Sev, but we apparently not privy to that information. I'm a bit peeved, OE.

Hmm...this "mind switching" thing is really getting out of hand. Do we get to find out what it really means soon?! Please!?

Sticking Charm...too funny, but a good idea...I also liked Harry's "you're not the one being dragged around like a sodding puppy" line too!

The Polyjuice was interesting..."I'm a bloody wanker!" And Sev trying to be serious and get Harry's attention while being his height and only a bit older than Harry is a hilarious image!!

I could see Tonks enjoying apparation..

So...how does Harry know to look upstairs? And what *is* upstairs? I really hope that Voldie isn't there himself...Oh, is Harry simply remembering the visions he had of Voldemort’s from fourth year that were in the Riddle house...like he *was* upstairs then? and thus that's most likely where whatever it is that they're looking for will be hidden?!

Ok, so Remus' "Downstairs" was his exclamation of where the glass was broken? Hmm...and they don't want Harry to get into the middle of a fight so they put him behind a curtain with concealment charms...I have a bad feeling about this, unless the invisible Bill stays there...but still, you've got me feeling uneasy, OE.

Ok, yeah, yeah, I know this is short but if I think of anything else and remember what it was once I sit down at my laptop again I'll let you know. This was a great chapter!! And now I've got to go get my laundry. Have a great Wednesday night!

    Author's Response:

Okay, I just first need to tell you.... They are not coming home until Voldemort is dead.  Or else they aren't coming home at all.  So nope, they are not being dramatic.  Harry was saying goodbye to his friends for real and Dumbles as well well because he very well may never see them again.  After the Horcruxes are secured, they are going to Voldy.  Yep. That was the plan.  There is no reason to wait.  Why wait for what they know has to happen?

LOL  Harry could use a lesson in Floo use.  ROFL

It is really cute that Severus won't admit he is friends with Remus so the best he can say, "Remus is not a wimp"  That man has issues!

You'll have to wait and see about the Horcrux hunting, except that yes, Harry and Sev know everything and well you guys not so much.  *evil laugh* but what fun would it be if you knew the plot?

Um, no.  You will not find out too soon about the switching thing.  Sorry.  Glad you liked Harry's indignation and the 'sodding puppy line".  Hee hee.

I really enjoyed the whole conversation while they were all Polyjuiced.  It is sorta funny to think of a blond-haired Sev boy who is scolding Harry.  :oP

Well so far, nothign is upstairs.  At least not that we can all see.  Harry is having very odd feelings.  Very odd feelings indeed.  That's all I can say....

Yes, Remus was indicating that the shattering glass was from downstairs.  And no, if there is a fight with Death Eaters mucking about, Severus really doesn't want Harry in the middle of that.  And yes, you are supposed to be uneasy.  I'm uneasy!

Thanks for the review.  Glad you liked the chapter!  :o)

Author's Response: Thanks, Scorpia!  I'm so happ you enjoyed it.  It's my favorite chapter though right now, 51 is making a run for the top spot.  Hee hee.  Thanks for the review.  :o)

I am so stunned right now. I don't know what to say to explain this...but I'll try none the less.

    This is my favorite chapter.

    It was beautifully written.

    You are a goddess.

By the time I reached the end, I forgot how far we'd come from the beginning of the chapter. Wow, it was a long way.

I loved how Sev handled Harry here (well, throughout the entire chapter, really) in the beginning. I'm curious if this "switching consciences" will have any further play in anything...or was it merely an indicator of how connected Harry and Sev are?

Harry not being able to imagine a life without Voldemort is heartbreaking.

But I love a determined Sev. He was really, really great at keeping Harry on the positive now...about living. And Harry's understanding nature allowing Sev to be human and make rash decisions is wonderful...exactly how I feel right now.

Question: It sounded like there were a lot more pieces of parchment in that roll that Dumbledore handed Sev...than however many there were. Was what we saw all that was there? Sev was shifting parchment around quite a bit for awhile. Just wondering.

You were right, I do love what was inside the roll...*sigh* Harry James Snape. Pure bliss...and it's about time! Granted there really wasn't a good time, but it grants us a nice little break from all that's flying around our (and their) heads. Thank you.

And I do wonder what the school's reaction will be...and the wizarding world too, for that matter. But I'm sure it's not going to be as hard as introducing yourself as Severus Snape's son for the first time. Oh, and Harry referring to Dumbledore as a "wily old bastard" was funny too. Good to know that Harry's got some good swears up his sleeve...and he certainly let them fly later on...

Question: How many Horcruxes have they found and/or destroyed so far? And the one that Dumbledore just found is Gaunt's ring, right?...or are you not following canon at all? The polyjuice potion is for retrieving the horcrux right?

I just want to say it's nice to know how much Severus understands Remus. It was great for him to predict that Remus would not be left out of it. (They're friends, right?! Still a little confused about that.)

Oh, and I was right...Harry didn't go to class at all. Not that it was that hard to guess.

But it was nice to have Ginny come in. Especially if Harry's letting himself hope now. Thanks, Gin.

I must applaud you in your description of the events that took place in Grimmauld Place. I am still stunned at how much emotion and information you divulge upon us while keeping us firmly in the dark until that one moment. It is beautifully written.

One thing though, I share in Harry's unyielding worry when he said, "But what if everything we’re planning here doesn’t go exactly as we want it to?" This makes me strangely uneasy and hesitant to believe that everyone will survive the final encounter with Voldemort.

The dynamic between Harry and Lucius was interesting...and bloody brilliant. Loved that part!

*sigh* These goodbyes seriously clawed at my heart. It really reminded me of moving into college and even just at the end of this weekend of fun; my mom was in tears that she was leaving me. Other chapters had been hard to separate myself from, emotionally...but this one was impossible. I really did cry in earnest (as if I didn't cry enough earlier today) and am starting to go some more now. The emotions that were there were so simple, so raw, and so fierce.

Especially Remus and Tonks'. They were the ones that were the most surprising, but also made the most sense. It's amazing how you can do that...only you.

It was nice again, to get a tiny reprieve from the ruination and despair that was the kitchen with Harry and Sev joking a bit. But it made what came to follow even worse, as I had further to fall. And I hit the ground hard.

I'm curious about what the finer parts are that Draco and Lucius have to play, but can wait. First, I need to blow my nose...and wonder just *when* they are all leaving. Hermione makes it seem like it's next week, while everyone else is acting like they're leaving tomorrow. Hopefully it's still a ways off.

Ron was brilliant, as was Ginny, as always. And Sev even stepped up to the plate, being the wonderful man he is. This really is putting me over the edge. But thank you, it's worth the fall.

I really don't know where this is going, as I dry my face and blow my nose once more. But if I come up with anything, I'll be sure to let you in on it. Thank you for an amazing chapter, I really wish I didn't wait so long to read it...

Oh, and congrats on the big five-oh!!

    Author's Response:

See, I knew you would love de dove the parchment.  YAY!  And I will tell you no more about other said sheets of parchment though it is entirely possible there were more than 3.  :o)

Yep, we traveled far in this chapter.  It was all rather unexpected...

Switching consciences is a very important part of the the LC universe.

Harry and Severus really do work well together, don't they.  I love them.  They compliment each other really well.

The Harry Snape deal was very important ploy by Dumbles.  It cemented both of them together and their resolve as well.

Well, Harry won't be hearing any reactions to his new name for awhile.  He's off to fight the Moldy One.

Polyjuice is for Hunting, yes.  The found H's are: the cup and the locket.  The others are fair game....

Oh, yes.  I would definitely say these two are friends, though you'll never get Severus to admit to it. Sev was quite hurt that Remus betrayed his confidence.  He realized of course that it was best that way, but yeah most of that anger was hurt.

I am glad you enjoyed Grimmauld place. Those were fun moments to write.

Yes, be uneasy.  We're all feeling that way.

Thanks about Lucius and Harry.  Harry is feeling rather fearless right now.  LOL

I am glad I got you to cry.  I have been waiting for it, PK!

    Poor Remus and Tonks...  *sniff*

Wow.  Ruination and despair.  I really killed you.  LOL

They are leaving right now, as we speak to go Horcrux hunting.  They have no plans to reunite with the others again until the deed is done.

Yeah, you did wait a tad long, didn't you.  :oP  But glad it was worth it!!!  Thanks PK.  You are Awesome!

I was about to apologize for having to wait 2 days to read Chapter 50 and write a review, but now, I'm actually glad that I had to wait, as there are tears streaming down my face, and I'm thankfully alone.

Oh, Tabitha, this was...I'm running out of worthy adjectives. This was beautiful. The signing was perfect. The small details like the rolling up of the parchment and then Severus straightening it out as Harry signed it... It was just such a perfect moment, dense with unspoken connection between the two of them.

I don't think I'm making any sense, but bear with me... My vision is still blurred.

I loved Harry's cheekiness and Severus's sternness...and have I ever told you that your Ginny is perfect? She and Harry in this story are such replicas of what JKR created, yet (dare I say it) even better?

    Honestly, I'm simply floored.

    Loved these particular lines:

“I’m terrified,” he admitted and she squeezed his hand, “but we’re not giving up.” She smiled fully now, her eyes filled with dancing warmth. He smiled as well, letting the hope grip him.

**Such mingled emotions in that paragraph.

"Severus threw down the powder and Harry’s vision was obscured, his friends’ faces mingled with green flames."

**This is where I literally broke down into a sob. It's all your fault.

Good Lord, I don't want this to end either! I empthatize with your struggle. I'm sort of feeling the same way about EE.

Thanks for such an incredible story. This chapter was undoubtedly one of your best.

    Author's Response:

Wow.  Thank you so much Jade.  I know you already know how much I appreciate and count on your reviews but I'll tell you again anyways:  I really appreciate your review!  Did I really make you cry?  YAY!

I'm glad you liked the signing.  That was one of the unexpected things about this chapter.  I didn't mean to write it this way.  It just happened.  And Dumbles finally gets to use his manipulative old ways for good.  :o)  I'm so glad you enjoyed the signing part and Harry getting a new name.  "dense with unspoken connection".  Even in a review, you are poetic.  LOL I'm so happ you said that.  That's just what you were supposed to feel.  They were cemented here.  I loved writing it.

Severus was a bit stern this chapter, wasn't he?  But Harry needs to get a grip and realize he has to follow orders for once.  This is a completely different situation than canon.  He is not going about this half-arsed with two other teenagers.  He is not going to be the leader here and Harry, even though he and Severus have been father and son for awhile now, I don't think he really grasps that.  He's the child.  LOL  Poor Harry.

Oh, I love that you love Ginny.  I adore her so much.  She is Harry's perfect match, I think.  I just love her.  Thanks!

Thanks for letting me know which lines you liked.  I love to know what stands out.  I am so glad you cried at the end bit.  Me too.  I didn't even expect to, but Harry has had these friends for so long, has counted on them for everything and now he's about to embark on the an incredible journey, without them.  Sad, but happy too.  Because he's got Severus.

I really, really don't want it to end.  I am having such a hard time not procrastinating.  I just don't want to write the ending.  *sigh*

Thank you so much, Jade as always.  You're encouragement means so much.  I'm so thrilled you enjoyed the chapter so much.  :o)  It's my favorite.

I put off reading this for so long because I was afraid of what I would find in it ::nods:: I'm glad I got around to it this morning though, because it was more comforting than I had anticipated. I'm still fairly certain that both Harry and Severus will survive because you promised a sequel, but then I remember about the ending of HBP and wonder if Snape will be on the run/the new headmaster in the sequel. GAH! I can't wait to read more!

This was a very moving chapter.

Unfortunately, I have no thoughts about where this story is headed! I'm just going to wait eagerly for you to finish spinning this tale.

Author's Response: You?  You, have no thoughts?  Highly unlikely.  You're supposed to join your son in helping me spin this tale.  :oP  I'm glad you liked the moving chapter though.  It was a fun one.

I loved the interaction here between Sev and Harry and the rest of them, it was poignant and beautiful. I hope everything works out and only Voldemort bites it at the end.

On another note, I know what you mean about not wanting to end a series, but there's always prequels and stuff, right?

FYI: I posted another chapter of Prisoner.

You are correct about the title. So many people are doing just that at this point. Even though no one knows the final outcome, they are still placing themselves, like chess pieces, where they are meant to be. Quite profound.

My favorite quote this time is “Your children will be Snapes.” Spoken almost as a throw-away line in a movie it says so much about the change in both men's attitudes not only with each other but as it relates to the hope they have for the future.

My second favorite line was “Tobias was sir. I detest the title." This made me smile because my father has always hated being called "Mr. _____" He still tells people that "me father was Mr., I'm just Art. So in addition to being a comment on his upbringing, to me Snape's comment sounded like a "Father" thing to say.

    Author's Response:

I'm glad you liked the profound bit in the title.  I liked your visualizations of all of them being chess pieces.  That's so true.  Everyone is getting themselves ready.

The entire name change and birth certificate were very poignant to me.  It signifies so much and it's almost like a rebirth for Harry.  And I'm so happy you liked that line.  It does say so much about how much things have changed.  And especially about Severus' attitude about the outcome of the showdown with Voldemort.  And Harry's perspective changes right along with him...

I love that you liked the 'sir' line.  It was a very father thing to say and he's been wanting to put into words for so long how he felt about that particular title.   Thanks so much for your review.  I'm so glad you're still enjoying the story, especially as we approach the end.  :o)
