Title: Chapter 29: Never Enough 27 Jan 2008 7:21 pm
Reviewer: cathyrf (Signed) [Report This]
Can I just copy pkrosche's review and paste it here? Clearly, we were twins separated at birth because I thought exactly all the same things she did reading this powerful chapter. I'm going to be weepy for the rest of the day now (lays head on computer desk and SOBS!)

And if this is how I'm feeling NOW how the heck am I going to get through the Halloween chapter? Because goodness knows how much angst I'm going to have to read through (and it's going to be fun and delicious and I'm wringing my hands in anticipation).

Watching Harry and Severus be a *family" was so wonderful (Sev checking on Harry in a panic after his nightmare, and the clothes, and the potion brewing and the apologies) and yet overhangs this horrible dark cloud of "this might be all we get." (Sobs some more...blows nose).

I'm guessing Tonks and Moody went to Gringotts to deliver Severus' letter to be opened on the event of his death (shudders to even consider the possibility) because I agree...neither Harry or Severus would get over losing the other.

I'm also guessing Harry's going to make an appearance before Voldy, but if Lupin is hanging out with him something fairly dramatic would have to take place. Don't kill off Remus either!! (Please?) And I can't imagine Severus truly being able to play his role if Harry suddenly shows up. Yikes! Of course, who knows what you've got up your sleeve.

Whew, I'm emotionally wrung out now. But it doesn't mean I'm not ready for the next chapter. Please? Pretty please?

    Author's Response:

You and pkrosche have made me so happy, you don’t even know!  I was giddy after I read your reviews.  Because you just both got it!  I was so iffy about this chapter.  Because I wasn’t sure people would get the underlying tension that was the entire point. I was afraid it would seem odd that we were just sort of rambling on and on about mundane things like clothes and photos and potions and pensieves.  It seemed pointless and yet that was the point.  Their lives for as long as Voldemort lives…are overshadowed by death.  I was so excited after I read your reviews, I had to rush over to work on the next chapter!  I was inspired by everything you said, so thank you!

And I hate to say it (okay, I don't really...lol), but it's only gonna get worse.  I am not so sure you are ready for the next chapter!

I don't know either how you will get through Halloween....much the same as Harry I expect.

I have to say again how happy I am that you got the family moments with the cloud of doom hanging over it.  Seriously...I'm giddy!

Truly, neither would recover if anything happens to the other.  Tragic, isn't it?

I won't give any more details of Tonks and Remus but I will say, no, they were not delivering a letter for Severus.  That was already a done deal by this chapter!  *evil grin*

And yes, I do have some delicious curve balls up my sleeves so I hope you enjoy.   Next chapter will be up very fast, though I hope you won't mind that it will be shorter than usual...I don't think you'll mind though!  I am very excited about it!  Thanks so much for your review!  You are the best!  You and pkrosche, seriously the reason my fingers have been flying over my keyboard the past few hours!  *big hug*

    Man, I feel like crying...

But, I've got a lot to say, so...This was an amazing chapter! It was really dark and depressing but that's one of the reasons that it's just so good. It was agnst lurking behind a curtain...I don't know.

I really enjoyed Sev's dream...and then it became a nightmare. I was just as scared as him when he hastily made his way across the hall to Harry's room. I'm really worried that Sev's going to have A LOT of trouble Occluding all this emotion from Voldie. It makes me all the more nervous that he's going to be found out as Harry's dad and tortured and killed...and that would be too much for Harry to handle.

Yeah for the photo album!...but even that was overshadowed by sadness. Although Sev's "you were slippery" was pretty funny. It was still great all the same.

Sev's and Remus' conversation...I was wondering what the Polyjuice Potion was for (thinking that someone would take Sev's place during the Death Eater meeting) but was pleasently surprised to find that Tonks and Moody were galabanting all over Gringotts, but for what?! I don't know... But I have decided that Sev is going to go the DE meeting 'just in case' Harry's captured and shows up there too. This makes me feel like he is going to be there... *sigh* I just hope that Sev lives through Halloween, that's all I ask as I'm almost to tears again...

It was interesting to see Draco and Harry share that moment of understanding. I just hope that Draco realizes that his father isn't really a loyal DE anymore and also turns from Vodemort, but I suppose that wouldn't be an issue if Lucius is somehow hurt beyond repair or killed. Draco isn't already a DE, right? I hope not...

It was also nice for Sev to move Hermione to another table away from Nott. I enjoyed yet another sign of his changing and renewed feelings towards Harry and his friends.

It was nice to have Sev and Harry revisit the past with the pensive. It shows just how trusting and loving they've become to want that earlier.

Sev and Harry's conversation about Halloween was especially hard to get through. I just don't know how either of them would be able to continue without the other. It was really hard to read Sev's thoughts as he was talking to Harry too. Just him knowing that he might, well, probably will not be coming back tomorrow while telling Harry what he could..broke my heart over and over again. And the last line. Just letting you know that my heart will not be whole again until I get to read your next chapter. And so I place the broken pieces into your capable hands.

But, don't get me wrong, I'm extremely excited for the next chapter, as hard and sad as it is/could be, I can't wait to read it. It was simply depressing that the normally happy moments in Sev and Harry's relationship (looking at the photoalbum, admiring Harry's new dress robes (that's what I see them as, anyway), brewing the Memory Enhancing Potion, were all overshadowed by the impending despair of Halloween night.

Have a good rest of the weekend and a good week and I hope for all our sakes that your muse is good to you. Thank you for an extremely powerful read.

    Author's Response:

Okay...I already said it to Cathy, but here it is again verbatim as you deserve to hear it too:  you two have made me so happy, you don’t even know! (seriously...my fingers have been dancing over my keyboard this morning and that's all due to you guys!)

Okay, deep breath: "angst lurking behind a curtain"--yes!  Exactly what I was going for.

I love that you are worried for both Sev and Harry and that Sev's emotions are going to overcome him.  He really does need to get a handle on himself befor he leaves, doesn't he?

I'm glad you enjoyed the photo album, even with the sadness.  I enjoyed the bath conversation.  That was fun!

No hints about Tonks and Remus.  LOL  And yep, that's exactly why Sev is going to this meeting and won't give up his spying (one reviewer was skeptical about the intelligence of such a move and I agree) because he wants to make sure he can be there to help Harry if he needs it.  I think too that Severus is so set in his own little mind that he will die because he expects still to lose everything so he's accepted it.  Now, Harry's death he won't accept, but his own....that's easy for him.  So sad.

No, Draco is not a Death Eater, not yet.  He's mostly concerned because just as Sev told Harry, he knows Voldemort's already angry with Lucius and he doesn't want any thing to uspet him even more.  I'm glad you liked their little moment.  Those two truly do have much in common.

I love it that you pick up on those little things like Hermione being moved from Nott.  Sev really is changing.  I love it!

I think Sev wanted to talk about the Pensieve because he felt such a strong need to clear the past from between them so there would be nothing holding them back.  Just good feelings.

This was a really hard chapter for me as well.  It took me so long to write it as I really didn't want to write any of that sadness and it only gets worse, i have to tell you.  *sigh*

Impending despair is exactly right.  Tears and all, I hope you enjoy it.  My muses are extremely pleased with me right now.  LOL  Next chapter will be up sooner than usual.  Thank you so much for your review.  Truly, inspiring to read.  My muses thank you!

Slow? Updating? I don't think so. I've only just had time to catch up! You're an updating machine.

This was totally and completely lovely, just lovely. "I want to take care of you." I mean that just says it all doesn't it. And the room thing at the end, I love that. Harry his very own room, it's great.

Of course bad things looming, and that scary promise Severus had to make. Not really looking forward to the Halloween thing but drama is still fun sometimes I suppose. Keep up the excellent writing! Looking forward to more.

    Author's Response:

LOL  It's true...I can't help but update.  It drives me crazy that the whole story isn't already updated already.  I'm a bit of a spaz, I suppose!

Well, thank you so much.  I'm so happy you enjoyed the chapter.  Yep, it does say it all.  That really is all that Severus wants...to care of Harry like he should have been all these years.  *sigh*

I'm glad you liked the room at the end.  He's gonna need it, that one.  LOL

Bad things are looming and yeah, the promise is pretty scary.  Too bad Harry's in denial about it though.  No promises from me...except maybe for some fun in the next couple chapters.  LOL  Thanks for reviewing.  Hope you keep enjoying. :o)

Wow, I love Severus playing the father. So awkward, but cute at the same time. Loved it ^_^

Author's Response: Awkward, but cute!  LOL  Yep, that about sums it up.  I'm glad you enjoyed that little tidbit.  Thanks for letting  me know you're enjoying.  :o)

Maybe it's simply because I'd only read your last chapter a few days ago, but this seemed to be a quick update! And an excellent one at that! Let the warm fuzzies keep me warm tonight! Ok, from the top...

I really enjoyed learning a little bit more about Halloween in that conversation between Dumbles and Sev. They really do enjoy the verbal sparring, and so do I, for that matter!! It's always fun to see what retorts they come up with...and you're amazing at keeping them both in character! I realize you can't tell us what's going to happen on Halloween and why Mad-Eye needs the Polyjuice Potion...but hopefully you won't keep us in the dark for long. It was also nice to see Sev stand up for Harry when Dumbles apologised to him, saying "why don't you tell that to my son, jerk!?" Yeah, it was great! So, I can't wait for that scene, when and if it comes...

I love how in character Harry was in that next scene, being concerned about Malfoy's welfare. So caring that boy is...and I suppose that "obsessive personality" fits too!

Harry learning Sectumsempra was delightful, as well as his certain adversion to killing people coming up again. It's just so in character, you truly are a master! I do wonder what Sev's reaction would have been if Harry, for whatever reason, asked who came up with that handy slicing curse...hmmm...

Oh, Hermione and her hinting..."HALLOWEEN" dance. Poor girl, but she's delightful. And poor Harry for realizing the repercussions of his understanding.

I too was worried that Harry was going to walk down to the Dungeons...he did after all wear his invisibility cloak to the common room...but he's getting smarter; remembering socks, his cloak, telling Ron where he's going. I pat you on the back, Harry; good job! But, what a shocker to have Sev recieve him that way, but it makes perfect sense. Sev's paranoid, but within reason and with good reason...so then can we really call it paranoia?! Hmmm...

I really like how Sev transitioned from Harry's scar to the Halloween Death Eater meeting to Harry needing clothes for the dance to Harry not needing to buy said clothes for the dance to Sev wanting providing for Harry to Harry getting the contents of Sev's vault if he died on Halloween...I thought he was being kinda Slytherin, although I realize he probably didn't quite plan for the conversation to take this particular path...yet it was effective.

I'm really glad that Sev talked to Harry about his relatives misstreatment of him over the years, eventhough Harry tried to skim over the whole ordeal... And the promise was perfect. I love that scene so much, it's right up there with the whomping willow and emotion lesson from last chapter. But, it was quite childish of Harry to demand such a thing, but at leat I think he realizes that Sev could not come back...he's just refusing to think about it. Because he should know that Sev can't guarantee anything...but also it has it's pro's. Sev agreeing, albeit hesitantly, will make him try harder to get away from Voldie or to at least survive enough to get back to Hogwarts...not that I think he's going to die...just be in mortal peril. I think it would mean the end of Harry if Sev died...and I hope and pray that I'm right, because I couldn't stand it if Sev died. Ok? No killing Sev! He can be so close to death that they've begun to dig his grave, but no dying!! *runs off (again) to check if character death is included in warnings*

Which reminds me...do we get to learn more about what Remus was doing for Dumbles next chapter, or at least soon?

"Harry Snape"...warm fuzzies return full force..."Lily Snape"...even MORE? warm fuzzies?! Oh, man! I hope we get to flip through that photo album over breakfast tomorrow!! I absolutly adored the idea of Sev tucking Harry in, well sorta tucking Harry in...it was perfect, whatever it was!! Hopefully we get some more of these scenes in the near future!

Just out of curiosity, how many days or weeks is it until Halloween? I can't seem to quite remember how far into the year you've gotten.

Can't wait for the next chapter! Ready for whatever you dish out, too...so if you need to, agnst away! Just no death!! (Please!) Ok, no time to write but time to read...what is wrong with the world! Why can't I just have both?!

Well, have a happy Thursday and good luck with the next chapter! Until then!

    Author's Response:

LOL  This was just a normally-time update (I think...*scratches head*).  It actually seemed really long to me.

The Dumbedore/Snape scene was really fun.  And nope, no details yet but more clues coming next chapter.  And no details on Remus either though that and Moody are connected.  Hmm...  I would love to see Dumbledore apologize too.  No time for that now though.  Oh, and before I forget...we are about a week away from Halloween so you might have to wait one more chapter to get there.  We'll see how the next one breaks down.  LOL

Harry is very caring, isn't he, especially when he really has no reason to be.  He's just way too nice.  Obsessive, certainly.  He sorta has a one-track mind, that one.  Hmmm....that would be great for Severus too tell Harry all about his sordid foray into the Dark Arts at school and Lily's love pulling him away from it but I don't think Harry is quite reaady to hear about that yet.  LOL

I love Hermione.  I just couldn't resist with the half-dozen, "Halloween" stresses.  LOL  And, nope this Harry's not quite a dunce as he used to be.  He's wising up.  Having someone (or more than one in this case) around to help you out will do that to a person, I think.  Sev is definitely paranoid, but your'e right.  That may not be the right word.  But, stressed yes.  For sure.

Sev's conversation didn't go quite as he planned, did it?  It was a nice attempt but Harry was too quick for him.  LOL  Harry's more Slytherin that Sev expects, I think.

Harry's go through a bit of denial here.  So, he's really not gonna plan for Severus to do anything but keep his promise.  We'll see if Severus manages too.  LOL  You're funny though, checking for warnings.  I will warn you though (LOL) that I will be adding a new warning to the fic either next chapter or one after.  Won't tell you which one thought.  Better to let you all wonder.  :oP

Ah.  Lily and Harry Snape.  Music to my ears.  LOL  You're cracking me up with your love of the photo album.  We'll get to it soon, I promise.  You're really cracking me up!  I'm glad you liked the "whatever it was" with Snape and Harry.  Not too bad for Sev's first time in fifteen years, tucking him in.  LOL

Lots of angst...no promises from me on anything else though.  Stay tuned.....and thanks for the review!

No, no, no. Severus doesn't break promises. All will be fine and good. (please)

    Author's Response:

LOL  Severus is not a promise breaker, it's true.   We'll see if he can manage to keep this one.  ;o)

Thanks for the review.  Stay tuned.  Lots of fun ahead.  That I can guarantee you.  LOL

Need another banner? Seems like I should do *something* for getting to read a scene where Severus tucks Harry into bed. (*smiles*).

But I jump ahead of myself. I'm curious as all get out as to why Dumbledore and Severus need polyjuice potion. And man can those two do the best verbal tugs-of-war, and you never know who's going to come out ahead. For a moment I thought Dumbledore was going to win this round but Severus got him in the end.

And no doubt Harry will need to cast "Sectumsempra" at somebody, but who will it be? Hmmm....

I'm glad Harry went right to Severus when his scar started bothering him, but I forgot about the floo powder and thought he was about to walk the halls by himself! Whew! And what was that about when Severus got all panicky when Harry flooed in? He's really got to be over-the-top with worry at this point that there aren't enough protections in place for Harry on Halloween. And he certainly knows more than we do about the planned attacks for that night. (I want to know too!)

I didn't understand Harry's resentment of Severus' offer to buy him more clothes at first, but after thinking on it a bit it does make sense - Harry's still in "I can look out for myself" mode and I'm sure not ready to have somebody else take over (especially with a topic that seems to embarrass him this way).

But what I *could* understand perfectly was Harry's panicked response to Severus' talk about his money being Harry's should something happen. Now really, Severus, what did you honestly expect? You've pointed out numerous times at this point that you will forever forward be there for Harry and now you're not so subtley mentioning your own demise? And boy, Harry was blunt asking him about the torture he is sure to endure. I could just feel Harry's anger and panic rolled up together (you do write emotional scenes brilliantly, keeping everybody in character). No wonder Harry flew into his face and made him make the promise. (Better keep it, Severus.)

Harry was so delighted with his new room; that was so cute! And he will just refuse to believe anything else can happen because of the promise; the alternative is unthinkable to him at this point.

Is Halloween coming up in the next chapter? (I just can't wait to find out!)

    Author's Response:

LOL  Yes, another banner would be lovely.  Hmmm....for the sequel, I'll remind you you offered.  :o)  And yes, Severus 'tucking' Harry into bed was quite adorable, wasn't it?  LOL

Polyjuice is just another piece of the puzzle.  But I will tell you that it does have something to do with the other adventure Remus and Dumbledore went on a few weeks ago.  Hmmm.   Oh, and yeah, Albus and Sev are really fun to write.  Sev definitely got him though.  LOL

I'm sure lots of curses will be cast...one of these chapter.

Hmm...I'm pretty sure Severus would have killed Harry if had walked down to the dungeons.  LOL   Let's see...I think both of these two are basically just panic attacks waiting to happen, especially Severus (though now harry too after that little talk) as Halloween approaches.  I think Sev was just on edge when Harry came in unexpectedly.  As he said...he "overreacted".  LOL

Harry is still in "i can make it on my own" mode.  True.  And the whole topic of the Dursleys is embarrassing too.  Who wants to tell someone else that they were treated so badly?  Yuck.

LOL  Seriously, Sev.  What was the thinking?  :oP  Harry was right...not too Slytherin, my friend.  Well, we can't be perfect all the time.  I loved that promise scene.  It made Harry so vulnerable and young.  And, yeah, Sev better keep that promise.  Too true.  Thanks for the compliment though.  But of course, emotions are my favorite to write.  I am a Hufflepuff, after all.

Halloween....hmm.  It's coming but not necessarily next chapter.  LOL

OOHH!! One thing I noticed and forgot to mention...Draco looking ill with his wand pointed hesitantly at Harry and Ginny. Hmmm...I wonder why that is?! Do we get more Draco in the next chapter with Sev since there's not going to be any pictures?

    Author's Response:

LOL  Draco looking ill....Well, he doesn't really want Harry to go to Voldemort.  If Harry had been sent there by the Slytherins right then and somehow Harry managed to destroy Voldemort, it wouldn't do his case or his father's much good if he had been one of the ones helping to send Harry away to Voldemort.  LOL

Hmmmm.....is Draco up next?  You'll have to wait and see though I do promise some Lucius in chapter 29.  LOL
