I think Severus handled that well, much better than I would have. I would have flipped if my kid had been caught with both drugs AND alcohol. I'm wondering now what Severus will show Harry to convince him to learn his lesson. I think Harry is sorry though and won't do something so stupid again.

I had to laugh at Mrs. Weasley though! Ron is going to be up to his elbows in dirty dishes or whatever when HE gets home. And I wonder what the school does in cases like this?

At college we would give you a written reprimand, goes on your record, sometimes it was reported to the police, who then would either press charges and set a court date and fine the person and give them community service to do for 30 days plus a six week Drug and Alcohol Counseling program if it was a first offense. A second and you might do some time in jail. Plus probation, meaning one more disciplinary action and you were expelled.

If you like some of those ideas, you could use them. Sorry I'm reviewing late, I meant to review last night but I was tired. Check out my new chapter of 2HH for Tom Riddle's childhood.

    Author's Response:

I thought that Severus managed to keep his cool pretty well, but it wasn't easy!  Harry needs something really life-altering to happen to make him understand Severus' concerns. Although, this time I truly believe that he's learnt his lesson, one more lesson wouldn't hurt.

Yeah, I couldn't resist the howler!  Mrs. Weasley will not let Ron off easy.  McGonagall will tell the parents and come up with a severe enough punishment to really get the message through.

I think that this offence, will go on their record, but I don't think that McGonagall will involve Aurors in this, as it is something that the school would want to handle internally, and in Wizarding Society they consider the parents to be responsible for disciplining their children, unless they break serious laws like murder, Dark Magic or theft.  I think they would prefer to keep this under wraps also, because it might make some question the security and care of their students. It is possible that some parents might consider that their childrens were inadequately supervised and pull them out of Hogwarts!

Thanks for the ideas though, and yes the students involved will be placed on some sort of school probation with the threat of expulsion should such a breach of rules occur again.  Don't worry, the children will be punished severely both at home and at school, which is why Severus insists that Harry must submit to whatever disciplinary action McGonagall dishes out. He really wants Harry to learn from this.

Oh I already read the chapter and it was great. I already left a review. Manor coming up next?

Well-handled discipline, and the memories are going to be tough, I can tell.

    Author's Response:

I think that Snape was a little tough with Harry, but not cruel, and yeah, it's going to be rough for Snape to relive his worst memories.

    Thanks,

Oh, I understand why Hermione (and Ginny?) would go to the adults, if indeed that's what happened, and I think they were right to do so. I'm just not sure that Ron and Harry would see it that way.

And I meant to add poor Ron for getting that Howler! Although if so many other kids were getting them too, maybe it wouldn't be quite as bad. And yeah, I don't think Ron is going to enjoy his holidays, is he?

    Author's Response:

Well, Harry might come to understand after his initial anger and disappointment wears off, but Ron, uh, it might take a bit longer!

Yeah, poor Ron, but he's not the only one that got one.  I wouldn't want to be in his shoes when Molly gets a hold of him. She'd probably do like Snape would have in the past in detention, make him scrub the toilet with a toothbrush! :)

Oh, this is even better than I expected, Pandora! So many things here...what shall I say first?

Well, I laughed at McCleggan offering Severus a drink and then throwing up on him (I loved that scene in the movie, too. It's priceless.). He really must have been out of his mind.

I agree with the Gryffindors. I'd take angry McGonagall over angry Snape any day, though McGonagall can be very intimidating herself.

Severus has every right to be upset and angry. As a parent I would be too, probably much more so because my kids don't have the excuse of having grown up without adult guidance and the weight of the world on their shoulders. But I liked that, as upset as he is, it also made him think on his own shortcomings and his troubled history with his son.

Harry is so courageous in many ways, but he may not have Neville's type of courage, the courage and self-confidence to stand up to one's friends and say 'no' to them. I wonder if Harry is a bit like Remus in this way. He never had any friends before coming to Hogwarts and even during his school years, there were a few times when everyone turned against him, even Ron much as I love the little redhead. I don't condone Harry's behavior here, but I do think it is understandable that he might be insecure, even now, about his friends' loyalty and love.

I loved how Severus expressed his regret over the past, and his unfair treatment of Harry, when they talked, and I would love to see them do a lot more of that, talking about how their past affects their present decisions and feelings.

I am very curious to see if Hermione and Ginny went to the teachers, and if so, if there is going to be any hard feelings between the boys and the girls. I can see Harry and Ron feeling very betrayed and angry, even if deep inside they know they were in the wrong. They're still at an age where ratting your peers out to an adult is taboo.

And I'm so intrigued by the last sentence and what that might mean. I can't wait for the next chapter!

    Wonderful job, as always!

    Author's Response:

Thanks, I just couldn't resist with that scene. It was one of my favourite parts of the movie. I  hope that everyone will get a little chuckle out of that.

Yeah, definitely McGonagall over Snape.  That man can be scary when he's in a snit, but when he quietly fuming, he's downright dangerous. It's all that black I think!

Severuse feels like he's failed Harry, but  he knows that with their history, it might be hard for Harry to really take Severus advice, because Severus feels that Harry may not respect him, or his opinions.  That is not the case at al, strangely enough, but it's how Severus perceives the whole situation. You are right, Harry just wanted to be a teenager and have fun, and he let his friends talk him into doing something that he knew that Severus would disapprove of. I think that in normal circumstances, that at seventeen, after having years of guidance from your parents, you would either take the lessons and values they have given you and use them to fall back on when you're not sure what to do and faced with peer pressure, or you cave in. Harry's had no such lessons, and still manages to be morally strong, yet when it comes to pleasing his friends, his resolve crumbles.  Like you said, he never had any friends before coming to Hogwarts and craves their approval, and is afraid to do anything to hurt that friendship.

I think that Severus and Harry are going to be having many more conversations from now on. I think that they've hit a milestone, and they're relationship has taken a new turn.  I think that, as strange as it may sound, that this incident may turn out to be a positive turning point in their relationship. As angry as Snape was with Harry, he kept his cool and handled the situation as if he'd been a parent all along. He's floundering, but when Harry saw how, though Severus was firm, he wasn't cruel and put a lot of thought into what he said to Harry. I think that Severus' apology and admittance that he was uncertain how to be a father, really got through to Harry.  Yeah, the punishment sucks, but it was something that a parent does when they care about their children, and I think that Harry , after seeing his friend's parents reactions, realises that Snape is just reacting like a normal father would when his kid screws up, and that just makes Harry see Snape in a new light.

Even if Hermiione and Ginny went to the teachers, I think that I can understand why they would, particularly Hermione. Aftre all, she's a Prefect and has a responsibility to all the students that she takes very seriously. She is torn between loyalty to her friends and possible serious repercussions should one of the younger students gets too drunk or stoned.  This is a very dangerous combination.  She doesn't want to be responsible if anything should happen.

She might have been willing to take a chance that when Harry and Ron are sober enough, that they woud be mature enough to realise that her first responsibility was the safety of the students. Ron is not known for his maturity however. It might take him longer to forgive.

Thanks Kristeh. I'll try not to make it too long.

To quote a certain caretaker and squib, "OOOhh, we ARE in trouble!" Great chapter as always. Can't wait for chap 23.

    Author's Response:

Yeah, Harry likes to push his limits, doesn't he?

    Thanks. Working on it.

    Uh-oh...

So, I really enjoyed Harry's talk with Snape, even though it turned out to be more of Harry trying to console Snape than vice versa. It was sweet, but not too sentimental. Nice work--I look forward to the next part!

    -P.G.

    Author's Response:

Yeah, Harry did console Snape, didn't he?!

    Thanks.

I liked how Severus handled Harry's nightmares, he was consoling and sympathetic. I also liked how Harry told Severus that he was better than he thought he was. It seems to me that Severus still carries an awful lot of guilt for his past actions. He needs to learn to forgive himself.

I had to laugh at the grades bit, that's a typical dad thing and Harry had better get used to someone critquing his performance, because parents do that until you're out of college and then they tell you about how you need to get a better job. It never ends, LOL!

OMG, those kids are all so DEAD. Does Hogwarts have an illegal drug and alcohol policy like US schools? I know that Europe has no legal drinking age, but I'm sure they don;t encourage kids drinking like that.

I can;t believe Harry would drink again after Severus's discussion with him last time at Grimmauld Place. And as for the drug use . . .that is not good either. I wish he had followed Hermione and Ginny and left the party. That was a poor decision on his part and Severus is going to be livid.

Harry might not live to be twenty!

Where on earth did they get marijuana?

    Author's Response:

Severus does carry a tremendous amount of guilt around with him, and needs someone to remind him that he deserves to be forgiven.  That the past is the past.

Snape would be apalled if anyone told him that he was acting a typical father. Snape would not want his son to be anything less than perfect, he would take it personally!  Also, he does care about Harry and wants him to suceed.

Lets for the purposes of this story, pretend that the legal age to drink, vote ecetera, in the Wizarding World is seventeen, and that includes drinking. But Hogwarts has a strict, no drinking, no smoking and no illegal drugs of any kind on school premises, policy.  Of age students may of course have a drink, within reason, in a drinking establishment, but as they represent the school, they are expected to comport themselves with dignity and discretion.

Seamus and Ron bought the liquor in Hogsmeade; they are of age of course, but snuck it back into Hogwarts. The Muggle drugs were something that Seamus and Ron got talked into buying. Seamus has never used drugs before, and Ron, being unfamiliar with Muggle drugs, had no idea what he was getting into.  He thought that they were just harmless fags with a bit of a kick.  Both Seamus and Ron are a little naive.

Severus has a particular aversion to alcohol because of his father.  He does have some in his quarters, but very rarely drinks.  If he does, it is usually only a glass of wine with his meal, or a small glass of whiskey from time to time before he goes to bed.  He is very rigid in that regard--both with himself and with Harry. Tobias' father had also been an alcoholic, at least in this story, and Severus was determined to break the cycle, and now his son is playing with fire.

Yes, Harry is testing his father's limits, isn't he?

I've just found this story and I am really enjoying it. Somehow, this softer Snape is much more believable than many I've seen and the dialogue is very well written.

    Thanks for the great story!

Author's Response: Oh thank you very much.

    Uh oh!! Harry's in trouble!!

I would think Ron would also be trouble!!

    Maybe he needs a howler!!

    9/10

    Author's Response:

Oh, yes. Molly is famous for those isn't she?  That's a great idea. Hmm....That would be too funny.  Thanks for the suggestion. I think that I'll embarass Ron in the next chappie.

Oh, yeah...Harry's in trouble big time.  An angry Snape is definitely not a good thing. :)

Wonderful chapter, Pandora! I'm always so happy to see when you've updated.

I love this chapter because I think Harry is really getting to see the good and not-so-good parts of having a father.

The first part of the chapter just had me melting...it was such a beautiful scene with those two, and shows how far they have come. I was so happy that Harry overcame his hesitation and doubt and actually went to Severus for help and comfort. And I was even happier that Severus really came through for him. He was so patient and concerned, it is obvious to me that he truly loves his son now and maybe he doesn't quite realize it yet, but I think the time is coming when he will realize how grateful and happy he is that Harry gave him this second chance...at life, at being a father and having a family. It's something that I don't believe Severus ever had before so he didn't really know what it meant to have a family. But now he does and it is slowly but surely affecting him.

I'm so worried about those dreams though...they sound so ominous. I don't blame Harry one little bit for being sick. First Voldemort, then Dark Magic, now this...poor kid never catches a break, does he?

I loved the conversation when Severus showed Harry that his Dark Mark was gone. You did a great job showing how haunted Severus is by the past, and showing Harry's forgiving and generous nature. Btw, I noticed that Severus called Harry 'Potter' at one point and wondered if that was deliberate, cause Harry really isn't a Potter here.

I grinned when Severus was scolding Harry about his grades...yep, typical dad there.

And then the party...I think that scene was exactly what you'd planned! Seamus is just quite the wild child, isn't he? Maybe Severus needs to take him in hand...Seamus' mum doesn't seem the type to be pleased at his behavior, lol.

So the girls left and Severus shows up soon afterwards...hmm? If they did go tell, I bet Ron and Harry are not going to be too pleased with them! And yep, Harry, this isn't very good at all!

    I'm so eager for more!

    Author's Response:

Thank you Kristeh, and I'm so anxious for a chapter from YOU!  Yeah, It's nice to have a father to lean on and care for you, but then they have expectations that you're not used to fulfilling either. You have someone to believe in you, but you also have someone to be disappointed in you if you screw up. But I'm sure that Harry feels that the positive far outways the negative.

I think that Severus is finally beginning to see the benefits also of being a father, but is scared at the realsation of the responsibility of having a child; even a very nearly grown child can give you grey hairs, and Severus is  realising that a teenager can be more trouble than a young child.

But on the other side of the coin, Severus is also coming to care deeply for Harry, but is not quite sure how to show it. He's just not comfortable with physical displays of affection. Actually, he's not comfortable with any displays of emotion at all. But Harry, thankfully, senses how Severus really feels.  It's just the little things that Harry notices. Severus doesn't have to fall all over Harry, for Harry to know that he cares.

Yeah, that conversation was very important in their relationship. Although Severus was initially pleased and felt forgiven for his sins, upon further introspection, he decided that simply losing his mark, and Dark Magic scars that adorned his body, don't absolve him of his crimes. He can't let go of his guilt.

Severus calling Harry, Potter, is something that happened subconciously because Severus was annoyed with him and in the past when Severus was angry with Harry, he associated the boy with James.  Severus didn't even realise that he did it.

Yeah, I thought a litle Severus acting like a typical father and demanding his son do well in school would be another sign that their relationship is progressing beyond student and pupil.

Ooh, the party...Well Seamus is not toally to blame here. Ron had a good part in it, and Seamus and Ron were both taken in by some older boys who made them think that Marijuana was cool.  Ron especilally, is not too knowledgeable about Muggle Drugs.

Well, I think that whether the girls told Severus about the party or not, Severus would have eventually figured it out or possiblly McGonagal, from the steady stream of students leaving the portrait hole to Gryffindor Tower! They had put a silencing charm so that the noise would not be heard outside of the Tower, but it would still have been suspicious when students of all ages, and Houses were coming and going from Gryffindor, and some of said students were a little inebriated.

Yeah, not too good at all Harry!

I'll try to update soon. :)

    Thanks Kristeh.
