Reviews For When the Boat Comes In
you chose your snake terminology so well that i didn't need to check the only one i wasn't sure about was schccch so thanks for that i first read it as though he was saying why do you shhhh (as in why do you shush) but the meaning was pretty obvious right after oh man slytherin and harry talking like actual snakes rather than regular human language that we're told is parseltongue is so great!! it also seems to be harry's native language--he reverts to it when he's upset and comforting himself
she is a good sort naive, but i think snape cured her of a good bit of that when she thought oh this sweet woman can't possibly be responsible for the injuries and then heard petunia list her litany of crimes i'm so glad harry is getting to rest this is so good for him the darkness already came for harry, snape it's ebbed, but it'll always be there harry's on the shore for now, but he'll need help all his life to stay above the tideline
I WAS MOSTLY RIGHT i'm very glad for the pensieve that was smart we don't know HOW the memories dredging happened to snape, but i maintain that it's probably part of Hogwarts' magic that Slytherin wove in specifically for the Basilisk
you know you mention the timeline again it's interesting when snape was experiencing the increase in fish and then that specific song-phrase we hear his da sing to him in his early memories i was thinking there was obviously some kind of magic going on and i noticed harry's increasing unhappiness and thought it weird they coincided but now that you mention it again i mean i vaguely intuited they were connected i just was too eager to read to think about how or why how i'm not sure unless it's idk hogwarts magic? the magic of being the Basilisk? something Slytherin left behind for the Basilisk specifically? uncle vernon and tobias are paralleled right from the start tobias was WAY more observant though, or maybe eileen was more careless i still feel like someone less of an idiot would have gone hmmm when harry was always unhealthily skinny at least, even if the bruises weren't visible he also should have known that harry was far too smart to WILLINGLY DRINK BLEACH harry can only speak normally--maybe at all--because his magic saved him bleach fucks you your mouth your esophagus your gastrointestinal system your everything so bad i wonder why magic would want to so aggressively remind snape of his dad? if it's connected to harry being unhappy, and it ramped up as he felt more miserable... was it trying to get snape's attention? make him think about the man whose loss precipitated his own horrific abuse and turn his attention to harry? make him think of the man who was kind to him and tried to protect him so he'd think about what it is to be a father and protect children and encourage him to treat harry like a son? hmmmmmmmmmm i bet it's harry's luck that humbugs are snape's favorite or something or his dad's favorite, if we're keeping the magic reminding him of his dad theme
possible excuse for the words/spelling: severus is reading it through a translation charm, but there's only so far into the future a translation charm can pull a language, so it made it to Middle English but no farther temporally alternate excuse: someone translated what he wrote, but the last time someone translated it into modern speech, what was modern then we now call Middle English you know snape did it to make petunia miserable but he really did dudley a favor honestly that hex is doing whoever receives it a favor, by waking them up to the concept that favoritism and unfair treatment is wrong i don't think dudley is inclined to bully harry anymore; i doubt he'll be able to bully again without thinking about how the behavior in his mother disgusts him
I enjoyed your story because there wasn't conflict with Draco but rather friendship. The conflict focused on Voldy which was enough to keep the story rolling. I also liked the way friendships shifted around, getting comfortable while settling in. I like the idea of all these kids growing up together and remaining friends throughout life.
