In the words of Ron Weasley:

I loved it. Harry liking Potions because it's so much like cooking? Tick. Snape rewarding Harry with detentions so it won't seem like he's being nice? Tick. Harry hating magic? Tick.

Can you imagine if Sirius were to find out that Harry was close to Snivellous, and getting lessons from the greasy git?
Also, when Quirrell tries to knock Harry off his broom, Harry is going to know that Snape was protecting him.
Also wondering how much Lucius knew of Snape and Lily's pre-Hogwarts friendship, or Snape's crush on Lily.
