One of the reasons that abuse gets missed is that the children often don't have the language to describe their plight, "My uncle's going to give me a good hiding" meant just a few swats with a birch rod to Fudge, not beating the child within an inch of his life.

When a teenager tells me, "My dad's going to kill me." I have to ask, "Do you mean he will be very upset and shout at you, or do you mean you are going to get a beating?"
