I went back tonight and reread this chapter and then read the reviews. I have to agree with Tia and anonymous. As a reader, I am not feeling any sympathy for Snape or Ian. Snape is just being a jerk. In canon, he had no one to love, so his personality was very understandable. Here, however, he had a wife that apparently he cared about and has a spoiled prat of a son that he cares for, so his unconcern for Harry is not as understandable as it was in canon. He's supposed to be an intelligent person, but surely an intelligent man would have a little more understanding of a boy like Harry. My very favorite fanfics are those where I can sympathize with both Harry and Snape. I like your story, but I do not like either Snape or Ian, so I am not rooting for Harry to find family with them.

thanks for the update. im a little disappointed that snape gave the firebolt to harry because i was hoping for sirius to give it. im sure ian will freak out if he finds out his father gave him the firebold. "best son in the world" indeed and he only got the potions kit. i think it is cruel to tell ian hes the best son in the world when he has another son:( at least harry got a gift from lupin, may not be the most expensive gift in the world but he still gave harry a present despite not having enough money for himself. now that is the true value of gift giving. snape bought the broom because he knows harry will need it but at the same time i feel as if he is only using the broom to buy harry's feelings. like it would pay for all his bullying, taunting and denying of harry. please i beg you, make snape and ian suffer a bit till harry opens up or be close with them. harry can forgive easily since it is in his nature. dont let him allow snape to be in his life that easy. please and thank you! cant wait for more:)

Author's Response: Snape did not give Harry the Firebolt. There was another gift from Snape, which Harry put away in favor of opening the Firebolt.

I know you are afraid of making Snape change his mind and character too quickly, but you've already established a good foundation for a shift in his attitude. It really is time for things to come to a head. It is time for grievances to be aired and for Harry to get the opportunity to speak his mind, and most importantly, for Snape to realize his need to apologize. Don't worry about your characters being OOC anymore; you've established a multi-chaptered foundation and a slow enough shift. You're so afraid of doing too much that you are no longer doing enough. We already have established Snape doesn't necessarily hate Harry anymore; we don't need to see minute degrees of tolerability. One chapter he's not hated; the next he's possibly tolerable; the next he is mostly tolerable. It's actually starting to be rather frustrating as a reader because the story is at the point now where it is calling for a real shift in he balance, and we expect it every week, only to get more of the same bastardly, prideful Snape.

It's time for some groveling; Harry has been put down long enough. You're almost 30 chapters in. Time to go in the opposite direction and let Harry get some much needed vindication.

This is good, but you're in danger of dragging out Snape as an Abysmal Dad and Ian as a jerk brother for so long that your readers will lose interest. It's hard to care for the uncaring. There needs to be a real connection between either Snape and Harry or Ian and Harry very soon.

Love as usual. Still don't care for Ian's self-absorbed attitude. To toss in that Snape cares more for Potter than him was especially self pittying and hard to sympathize with given their past. Wonder what Snape got Harry... Wonder if Harry got them anything. I am thinking he might have gotten clothes for Ian to make up for having to borrow some from him over the summer. And maybe potion ingredients for Snape to replace the healing ointment jar he accidentally broke. He doesn't like being a burden and as bad as they were to him - Harry doesn't seem to take anything for granted even kindness unwillingly given. Really liked Remix' s note and gift. And the Firebolt from Sirius. Thank you for writing! Can't wait for more...

What a spoiled boy Ian is!!!

Back to Harry -- glad he got the broom from someone. And we still don't know what Snape managed to force himself into getting for Harry. A potions kit?

Good story. Thanks for writing it. Look forward to more updates.

Darn, I was hoping to find out what Snape got for Harry. And Snape is right - Ian is a drama queen.

I enjoyed the chapter. But we still don't know what was in the present from Snape ! Can't wait for the next chapter.
