Snape's remorse at discovering how Harry has been treated by the Durley's is a pretty common theme here, but I think there's a reason for that.  We all want to think that Snape has redeeming virtues, and that if he really knew the truth, he wouldn't be such a jerk.  I personally would love to see evidence of this in canon, but I think because its all from Harry's point of view it will never happen.
