Reviews For Reading the Signs

I don't remember how many years ago I first read this story (and specifically this chapter), but I know I still have the same reaction to it. As hard, as difficult as Snape's lesson was for Harry, it was RIGHT. Only seeing the real effects of mis-handled Incendio spells would show Harry the truth of what could happen, just how serious it all was, that it was indeed nothing to play with. Yes, Severus will have to reassure him more, and more often, for a while, that he (Harry) is still a good boy, still loved. But I bet Harry doesn't play with Incendio anymore, either. Better he learn it like this, than the TRULY hard way, like those people in the St.Mungo's Hospital ward. A well-written chapter, author. Thank you.

You may be criticized for the choice of how Severus handles this, but I personally think you're right. Severus is a professional who works with children. Even if he's not usually crazy about them, he still has properly protective instincts. Visiting a site like this is an objectifying way of viewing 'the other side' of burning. It removes the pretty, fascinating way flames look, and shows--as objectively as possible--what can happen. Harry could have ignored words, no matter how impassioned. Severus needed him to know WHY this was important, and in a way Harry couldn't ignore.

Author's Response: Thank you!  You've managed to put into words exactly the rationale I was trying to get at.  Harry needed to see what could happen if he played with dangerous spells.  The words would not have been enough.  As we know too well, our young protaganist tends to rush off even when warned.

I just want to say that you have managed a truly wonderful story. Not only is it very, very intuitive to a child's psyche, but also to that of a child's loving care-giver. The fact that you have portrayed Snape as being ignorant of how to respond to many of the problems Harry has is wonderful...so few authors acknowledge the fact that parenthood, in any capacity, is a learn-as-you-go type deal. Thank you for putting so much warmth and feeling into this story, both of which tell much about your own character.

Author's Response: ::blushes:: Thank you for such a kind review.  I`ve always wanted to explore Harry`s more vulnerable side, particularly in light of the Dursleys.  And I didn`t want to make it too easy on Snape, as he`s new to this whole situation as well.

I am so glad to have found this story. I thin I may have said that in an earlier review but it bears repeating. I love the way Severus and Harry's relationship is developing and in a way that they are both still in character. Are you going to tell us what the signs that Harry uses to refer to Severus are? I have my suspicions but at this point in time they remain only that.

I look forward to the continuation of this wonderfully written story.

    Author's Response:

Readers will definitely find out what signs Harry is using, but not *quite* yet, I don't think.

Thank you so much for your kind review ;)

Oh, so sweet! And so sad!
You are very good at making your readers 'see' your story, especially on the last paragraph, I could really see Harry running to Snape, and the signing, OH! I'm studying ASL, so the part about him signing 'sorry' against Snape's chest instead of his own was so amazingly sweet and very meaningful.
    This part was wonderful:
“Me, I would feel nothing.” Harry’s face crumpled impossibly. Severus took several meaningful steps forward, but could not quite get all the way to the chair before he looked across the room and added, “I would feel nothing, Harry, because if something happened to you I do not think I would survive it."
Oh, be still my heart! Aah!
You are such a great writer, and this is a lovely story, please continue, I can't wait for the next chapter. :)

    Author's Response:

I'm incredibly pleased you liked the part about Harry signing against Snape's chest.  I'll let you in on a little secret: that particular moment was the catalyst for the whole story.  It just *popped* into my head one day and I scribbled it down.  Then I thought -- how on earth are the two of them ever going to get to that moment?

You flatter me greatly with your words about my little story :)
