Reviews For Never Say Remember
-P.G. Author's Response: Life has no guarantees, but Severus has faith that she will always stay.
I keep wanting to shout, "You're not being fair to (canon) Harry!" But that's a reflexive response, because it seems like all the circumstances are piled against him; I don't mean it as a slight against your story. Quite the contrary - the fact that I'm so affected is, of course, a significant feat. I just feel so bad for the boy, because in a way his entrance into this Snape's world mirrors their original meeting: Snape is judging him for things out of Harry's control, without actually taking the opportunity to learn about who he is as a person first. Granted that Harry wasn't being the most mature about it, but Severus never actually bothered to try to understand the reasons for that. He looked at Harry as though Harry had personally stolen his son from him, and disregarded just how emotional a moment it was for Harry to see his mum alive and (as far as he knew) well, making snap judgments about the actions of a boy who is overwhelmed by confusion, joy and grief all at once. I almost literally reeled back in my chair when he actually thought Harry might act violently toward Lily! Which isn't to say this Snape is loathsome, or that you're not writing him well; his own reactions are perfectly understandable, as well, and I certainly have sympathy for him. Judging by what we've learned about him tangentially, either from the other Harry or in potions class, and of course in his interactions with Lily when Harry's not about to disrupt the mood, he seems like a pretty cool guy, and a believable take on the character based on the different choices and their ramifications. I'm just dearly hoping that at some point, the two of them can create a dialogue to forge some understanding, and particularly so Harry can go, "Look, you don't understand why I've been acting this way." Perhaps that's already begun in the chapters I have yet to reach. Actually, ironically, I had to scroll down to type this just after the first real 'breach' of understanding between them, when Severus reached out to grasp Harry's shoulder. But the scene that precipitated it.. this Severus really can have no comprehension of just how deathly important that cloak is to Harry, and though Harry's by no means being a paragon of virtue - his upsettingly unflappable belief that Snape is somehow abusing and/or manipulating Lily, for one - that really struck a chord with me, and I fully understand why he so constantly rails against everything, as Severus said. I'll finish getting caught up after I've slept, and hopefully have more cohesive and encompassing feedback - I know, I haven't even touched on the other storyline, which is just as good in its own ways. I simply had such a visceral and intense reaction to this aspect of their relationship that I couldn't stay silent. In any case, I think you're doing an excellent job, and I will certainly be following along. Author's Response: Thank you for the interesting thoughts! I love long reviews where the reviewer analyzes every side of a story--I'm a bit of an analyzer myself. ;) I've had several reviewers intelligently and passionately argue about who was right or wrong in the Snape/Harry conflict, but I'm with you--they each have their reasons for acting the way they do. I hope you had a chance to read the rest of the story!
Author's Response: This came up in chapter 5 (on ff.net, I think). I edited so that Harry is aware of rumors about Snape's allegiances, and after the events of chapter 5, he clearly knows that Snape was a servant of Voldemort's. I figured once Harry learned that, it wouldn't take long before someone mentioned the term 'Death Eater,' so he'd be familiar with it by this chapter. I'll have to look at the chapter again and see if I need to slide in a quick comment about that.
Author's Response: Thank you! You're a lovely reviewer. :D
Author's Response: Thanks! This chapter is one of my favorites, too!
Author's Response: Thank you! This part of the story includes some of my favorite chapters.
Author's Response: Thanks!
Author's Response: I'll do my best. Thank you for the review!
Author's Response: Harry's from the school of hard knocks. :) I adore Lily and Severus as children. It's like the children show the core personalities of the adult characters, before all the layers of life experience cover them up. Plus, they're really cute. :D Thank you for posting! |
