YEAH!! I love what you're doing with this story! Severus is getting very protective of Harry, and you're showing very well his righteous anger at what Harry's been through. I love this story! :)

Author's Response: Thank you!  I love showing Severus being all protective, and I do think he'd be extremely protective of someone he cared for.

Its a pity Harry didn't hear Sev call him his son, i think it would have made a big difference to Harry

    Author's Response:

You're right; it would mean a lot to Harry...if he really believed it, but I'm not sure he would yet.  He's beginning to trust Severus...I love Anne's line that Harry's heart is warming up to Severus faster than his mind is...but I'm not sure he would believe that Severus really considered him as a son yet.  Partly because of their past and lingering distrust, but also because I think that Harry would have a hard time believing that any adult really wants him around.

He believed Sirius because Sirius wanted Harry to live with him from almost the moment they met, and Sirius proved himself to Harry during the Triwizard Tournament year, hiding in a cave and eating rats just to be near Harry then.  Harry might believe the Weasleys would be willing to take him in because he's had several years of being around them, and they've made him feel welcome.  But I don't think it's something Harry would easily believe...he spent too many years with the Dursleys drilling it into him that he was an unwanted burden, so anyone else would have to overcome that baggage and really reassure Harry.  But Severus will make it plain to Harry later on in the story.

    Thank you!

"Never again," he whispered. "You're my child now, and no one will ever hurt you again."

That's my favorite line in this chapter. It just gives me warm fuzzies. I am so glad that Snape found out about the Umbridge abuse. I think the way you wrote Snape's reaction was perfect. Also, Harry's reaction to Snape's reaction. Just so surprised that anyone would be concerned on his behalf. I think you handled that whole scene wonderfully. Btw,I would love to see an Umbridge/Snape confrontation.

Although, little does Snape realize that Harry wants to hurt himself. What will he do when he finds out? The emotions involved when dealing with a suicidal person can be extremely contradictory and complex. On the on hand you want them to know how much they are loved and cherished. On the other hand there is a very strong anger toward that suicidal person, just as there would be anger toward anyone who would want to hurt that person. You want to comfort that person and at the same time you want to rage at them. At least that's been my experience. I wonder how a person as volatile as Snape will respond?

I noticed that Harry kept getting a "lump" in his throat. I love that. It seems to me that Harry beginning to respond to Snape's concern at a certain level. I think his heart might be warming up to Snape faster than his intellect is.

I like the way you solved the problem of Snape instructing Harry in dueling. Toby. Interesting name. Love the irony. What a great therapeutic way for Snape to stick it to his father. I have to confess, I'm of an age that the name "Toby" will always make me think of "Roots." The scene when Kunta Kinte was beaten until he accepted his slave name, "Toby," will forever be seared into my consciousness. That name just evokes a lot of emotions for me. I think this might be true for many people of my generation, people who saw the original broadcast of "Roots."

I may have missed it in an earlier chapter; but, how come Harry gets to do magic? He is an underage wizard. He's not at Hogwarts. It's summer. Maybe you've addressed this issue already. Could you remind me which chapter it's in.

Also, I wasn't expecting this chapter to come so quickly. Not for another week or two at least. I was going to reread some parts of SC and was so pleasantly surprised to see that you had updated. I was so excited. Also, imho, this is one of your best chapters so far.

    Author's Response:

Thank you!  I wasn't sure about that line, but I am glad I decided to go ahead with it.  You're absolutely right about Harry's being surprised that people would care about his welfare...it's just not something he has a lot of experience with, with a guardian anyway.  He's too used to taking care of himself and having to handle things alone.  The Umbridge/Severus confrontation will probably have to wait til the sequel...I'm sorry to disappoint all the people who want to see it sooner, but SC is pretty well planned out, and I really do think it would seem out of place to stick that in.  On the other hand, in the sequel, I do have the idea that some of the Azkaban prisoners will escape and there will be some threats and conflicts from that, so I think I could work in Sev and Umbridge having a showdown better in the sequel.

Yes, I can see  that dealing with a suicidal person can be very difficult and cause lots of conflicting emotions.  Severus may show some of that, but I think after some initial anger he will try to understand the causes of Harry's behavior and try to meet those needs and heal the wounds that have driven Harry to such a dangerous depression.  He may feel some anger and guilt at first, though.

    >>>his heart might be warming up to Snape faster than his intellect is.>>>

What a great line, and I think it's a good way to describe what's going on with Harry.

Oh, I didn't even think about "Roots".  I was just a wee little tyke when that originally aired, and though I have heard of that scene, it never crossed my mind.  "Toby" is, as you said, one of Severus' jabs at his own father.

The part dealing with Harry doing underage magic is in chapter 14, when DD and Poppy come to dinner, and DD is talking with Harry and Severus about Sev working with Harry on Defense.  He lifts the Trace from Harry so Harry can train and practice.  I decided that since DD is head of the Wizangamot, that I would give him that authority.

Thank you so much.  My SC muse is going strong right now and it's hard to deny it.  I don't know which story I'm going to work on next...I may even write a short Trio vignette for another group I belong to, but SC is my favorite story that I'm working on, and I'll try to update again within a week or so.

Yes, please, let Snape and Umbridge meet. Soon. *feeling bloodthirsty*
    Little-sun

Author's Response: Thank you!  A lot of readers on FF.N  have been wanting Sev and Umbridge to face off, too.  Right now, I just don't see that working in SC, but it would fit nicely into the sequel, so if I ever get this first story finished and write the sequel, I'll probably have Severus and Umbridge have a showdown then.

aww! i just love sev, i want one of him, he is so sweet being protective of harry "you're my child now and no one will ever hurt you again" possibly the sweetest line of the story his far! bring on the updates lol

Author's Response: Thank you!  I wondered if that line might be a bit much at this point, but I also do see Severus as being a person who feels very deeply, even if he is somewhat reticent about showing it, and with Harry being asleep, it helps him to open up.  And I think once Severus did care for someone that he would be extremely protective.
