Lupus isn't necessarily a death sentence. My mom's oldest friend has been living with the disease for thirty years. She's raised seven kids, survived two husbands, lived through several boughts of cancer, and is currently growing old with her third husband. And she did it mostly on herbal cures, too...

Author's Response: Yes, I'm aware of that, although my friend's mother did die of it while she was in college.  Lily doesn't actually die of the disease, but of the way her magic responds to it, as you'll see.  back in the 1980's before they came out with all the new treatments and stuff, more people tended to die from the complications.  It really depended on the individual and how the disease expressed itself. Your mom's friend was very lucky, good for her!

Great chapter. That was really needed after the last one.

Although I don't like Lily being sick, and wouldn't wish more strife on her, I was glad that Petunia lived up to her reuration, and that you didn't make her all sweetness and light in the face of Lily's illness.

I really liked how Lily stood up for Sev and her love for him, but best of all was Harry telling Padfoot to 'Bite the bitch's arse.' I loved that -- and that Sev had to bite back his laugh.

    Looking forward to what's next.

    Thank you.

Author's Response: No, she wouldn't be all sweetness and light, no matter Lily's illness, she would never miss a chance to badmouth Severus.  Harry was only copying Sirius, but even so--out of the mouths of babes.

Huh. this chapter actually made me feel sympathetic towards Petunia. No wonder she's such an unpleasant person, with the way her own parents treated her. It's the job of a parent to teach a child how to be less prickly and more pleasant. Having a sweet nickname for one child and a totally derisive one for the other, and even use it, is completely uncalled for. I almost cry for little Petunia when her sister and her father call her names like that. No wonder she treated Harry the same in canon, and no wonder she married Vernon - she must've felt he was her only ally. Petunia was a child as well, not the nasty adult we know from canon, and Hal and Vi apparently are pretty selective when it comes to good parenting. Dudley obviously takes second-place to Harry in their affections as well, and there is nothing that angers a mother more. As for Hal wishing it was Petunia dying instead of Lily, that is just horrible. Apparently he doesn't give a d*** about his other daughter, since she didn't live up to his expectations. Sure, Petunia is an adult now and ought to know better, but obviously her family has given her little incentive to become a better person.

If Harry had badmouthed an adult besides Petunia like that, he would have been spanked, in time-out and grounded for weeks, but since it's Petunia, it's apparently ok and warrants only a slight, half-hearted reproach. If MY three year old called his aunt a bitch, I'd most certainly want to know where he even LEARNED such words, let alone think it is alright to use them. A child treats an adult if not with respect, then at least civilly. All Harry has learned now is that it is fun to be nasty to his aunt.

    Author's Response:

Actually, we don't know what Lily's parents were like in canon, or how they treated their children, only that they were proud of Lily for having magic and Petunia resented the fact that they didn't regard Lily as a freak like she did.  Even so, that doesn't give Petunia and excuse in canon to treat Harry so horribly, like a servant instead of a family member.

The nicknames the girls have in this story are reflective of personality, they aren't meant to be derogatory.  And while Hal might favor Lily more, which is a common failing among parents, my own do it, I wouldn't say that he hates his other daughter or wishes her dead, and he certainly never said that to her. He even says he regrets thinking that way, but he's hardly in a rational state after finding out his daughter is dying. After the disaster at the femily reunion, where both Vernon and Petunis were nasty withoput reason to both Severus, Harry, and Lily, Harry has no reason to like Petunia, considering she smacked him across the face, and then she insults his father right in front of him. Yes, he shouldn't have called her that, but he had just heard Sirius call her that, and was repeating what Sirius said.  Sev did call him on it, but considering what Petunia accused him of--making his wife sick and being an awful doctor, he wouldn't feel all that compelled to yell at his son for saying what he probably wanted to.  Petunia has never treated Severus with any kind of respect, either as a child or an adult, so therefore he doesn't feel she deserves any from him.

Consider the conversation in the bedroom with Lily--not once does Petunia ever express any sort of sorrow that her sister might be dying, she asks after her halfheartedly and then proceeds to attack Severus and heap all the blame on him, calling him names and being generally nasty to a man who is falling apart watching the woman he loves die in front of his eyes.  And worse, she says such things to her sister, his wife, who obviously loves him, and whose days are numbered.  Whatever pranks Lily may have played upon her as a child, Lily still honors her relationship with her sister, allowing her into her home despite her behavior towards her husband and son and Petunia repays her by being her nasty vindictive self.

And there was never anything mentioned about favoring Harry over Dudley with Vi and Hal, simply that they see Harry more because he lives near to them.
