Great chapter. I like how Snape is taking his guardianship seriously. All the small details you’ve included make the story rich and engaging.

Well I really like the story :D:D Its really good :D but what I don't understand is this constant spanking, especially on someone that old. I've read it in a lot of fics and I just don't get it... I mean there are tons of other punishments, why use a corporal one, and on an abuse child at that? Perhaps its a cultural thing, in Sweden corporal punishments are forbidden by law. which I support, I don't really get spanking. but I guess everyone is different. and I do get that its not mean or overly hurtful or anything. I just believe in other means than pain and shame to get children to behave :S But now I'm just rambling... great fic, keep it up ^^

    Author's Response:

In the US, while it is frowned upon as a regular response to aberant behavior on the child's part, it is not illegal. Severus had clearly laid out the rules as to when a spanking was to be expected. Harry broke the rules. Simple as that. I don't believe in spanking a child for every will he, nil he bit of rule breaking, nor do I condone excessive spanking when it is correctly applied. A few swats normally does the trick; and to be honest - from my own childhood - it wasn't the swats I remember, it was the waiting for them. Of course it doesn't deter a damn thing if the child does not understand from the start why they have received this action, and the parent in question should never swat in anger and always reassure the child afterwards that they are loved, that that is the end of the matter and that the transgression is forgiven and forgotton and do they understand now why what they did was the wrong course of action to take?

I readily admit that this attitude is rarely taken in societies and that abuse is widespread - as is permissiveness and parents being scared of their children reporting them to the authorities which leads to a lot of children, at least in the US, being unaware of limits to correct societal behavioral norms.

Where I grew up, the teachers were still allowed corporal punishment in the school at their discretion. This was a mandate by the parents. Trust me, when I tell you, that we respected the authority of our teachers, and if a teacher decided that a student's behavior in class warranted the punishment, it would be done in front of the class: Added embarrassment. It didn't happen often. Now, this would never be condoned now, and is reflected in our teachers being unable to maintain proper classroom discipline and authority. Kids ride roughshod over them knowing that the worst they could receive is a detention.

But, you are right. A lot of stories include it as one of Severus' methods of handling Harry - probably because a lot of us older American writers wish we could put Harry over our own knees and beat some sense into his butt for doing some of the idiotic things he does! LOL!

Is Draco a main figure in the plotline? Such as... does Severus become his father as well as Harry's? I certainly hope not but if it happens, I will continue to read - I'm a sucker for Harry/Sev fics - /just/ Harry/Sev fics.

Update soon, my dear, I'm looking forward to more.

I enjoyed reading Harry's POV, he's my favorite, lol. The length of your chapters is great. Very satisfying.

I like the way you have Severus showing Harry that he is a reasonable man, and telling Harry what he can expect from him as far as punihsments and so forth. It's very important to give a child rules and consequences, which isn't something anyone has ever done for Harry until now.

I love how Harry is surprised and awkward at Severus's statements and the comment about Snape not being any worse than Vernon was great!

I also like how you let Severus only use spankings as a last resort, which is how I feel it should be. Too many CP fics on here go over the top in my opinion, using it as continuous punishment for EVERYTHING. it gets too predictable, and also is more harmful than good. There are alternatives to punishing a child, and beating a child with a switch, belt, or a hairbrush is abusive and unrealistic for a caring parent. Also the number of times some of these fics have Harry getting smacked is totally unrealistic-25-40 times, good Lord! No loving parent would ever do that, no matter what the kid's done!

Sorry, I just get tired of reading CP fics that have that same old tiresome theme, and I'm very glad that yours is NOT like that!

I have some CP in my stories, but I try to keep it reasonable, unless I'm illustrating abuse, like you did with Vernon.

I think your Severus will make a very good guardian for Harry and in time will grow to love him.

I liked several things about this chapter. This little exchange "“Wish I knew how he manages that little trick…” he murmured as Pomfrey came to stand beside him, and pushed him back on the pillows.

“Don’t we all!” she said sotto-voce." showed nicely that Harry is already becoming more comfortable with Severus. I also liked how he realized that Severus had been helping him all year with a nutritive potion. And I like that Severus will already know that Harry is a parselmouth. (I must admit that I also really like the fact that you use "parselmouth" and "parseltongue" correctly.) It will be interesting to see how this changes Harry's second year.

    Author's Response:

Thanks, I truly like that bit as well. For everyone who is wondering... Parselmouth is what you are, ie: someone who speaks parseltongue - the language.

    Thanks!

I really like this story. The fact that the corporal punishment was talked about first was a very good idea. I seem to be reading more and more stories with that in them, but the punishment is never talked about be that happens. Harry seems to have his Slytherin side out when he deduced the fact that someone was spiking his pumpkin juice all year. Anyway, please update! It's nice to read a story with proper grammar and spelling as usually when I read stories, I end up correcting everything in my head!
