Anyway, I love the back story you have started telling us. It's very interesting and it seems like it could have happened. I hope that we will hear more of it in future chapters. I also like your characterization of Snape as, well, nice. He seems to be very caring toward Harry, even though they were just recently thrown together, which is nice. As none of the monumental events that caused the animosity between Harry and Snape had happened yet, I think that Snape is showing very possible behaviors. And it's AU, so do what you will. But I am enjoying your characterizations so far. All in all, brilliant story. I'm waiting for your next update! Author's Response: I seriously do not believe in talking down to anyone - that includes my writing. *snicker* My daughter just rolls her eyes at me when I use "big" words. I just tell her "there's the dictionary, look it up!" To expand anyone's vocabulary, and help out third world countries, go check out FreeRice.com - an absolutely free site where you can earn rice that goes to feed needy countries by learning new words - how awesome is that! Watch out though, it is really addictive!

The part with the secret marriage and Sev not hating James or Remus was excellent and a neat twist from other stories. I also like the fact that Dumbledore didn't know about the marriage, it shows Sev doesn't trust him quite as much as it seems, which is good. The old man meddles too much and manipulates people. I can't wait to see Harry's face when Sev gives him the potions kit, and that's different too, since most other writers always focus on Quidditch. Nice twist! perhaps Sev could also show Harry the picture of him and Lily, I think it would make Harry a good deal more receptive towards him. Author's Response: Thank you for your thoughtful reviews, I'm glad you are seeing a lot of the same things I do. I think you will like where the story takes these themes later on. I don't necessarily believe in CP - although my own child has had her butt beaten on the rare occasion. And each and every time, she was warned beforehand that if she continued the incorrect behavior, that would be the consequence. Of course, now she is taller than me - and that becomes a problem. But she is a good kid. Sev doesn't necessarily hate Remus - but he's not exactly his favorite person to be around, either. And Harry is melting Severus' heart - although Sev can muster up the sneer when he needs it! ;-)

I love how Harry is surprised and awkward at Severus's statements and the comment about Snape not being any worse than Vernon was great! I also like how you let Severus only use spankings as a last resort, which is how I feel it should be. Too many CP fics on here go over the top in my opinion, using it as continuous punishment for EVERYTHING. it gets too predictable, and also is more harmful than good. There are alternatives to punishing a child, and beating a child with a switch, belt, or a hairbrush is abusive and unrealistic for a caring parent. Also the number of times some of these fics have Harry getting smacked is totally unrealistic-25-40 times, good Lord! No loving parent would ever do that, no matter what the kid's done! Sorry, I just get tired of reading CP fics that have that same old tiresome theme, and I'm very glad that yours is NOT like that! I have some CP in my stories, but I try to keep it reasonable, unless I'm illustrating abuse, like you did with Vernon. I think your Severus will make a very good guardian for Harry and in time will grow to love him.
