Reviews For Not That Bad of a Birthday After All
Author's Response: Relative, Thanks for your review and that information. When I was writing about them skating on the lake, I was thinking of the scene in "Little Women". I didn't think to take into account how much warmer England is than Massachusetts. Plus, I can't imagine Sev taking Harry to a crowded rink trying to teach him to skate. Also, I'm not sure Sev would have thought to use a chair, but it's something to keep in mind. Thanks again.
**I don't think I've ever read a story where this has been brought up. I think Severus hardly ever felt 'worthwhile' as a teacher at Hogwarts, and this experience, teaching Harry how to skate, would definitely make Severus feel good...and purposeful :-) I loved this story; I'm actually surprised you didn't think this was any good. There are a few typos which break up the flow of reading at times, but they don't make the story unreadable. You've written Harry in a very endearing way. I really enjoyed this story. I hope you keep writing! Author's Response: Thanks so much Jade, I think you're right about Sev not filling 'worthwhile'. With Harry, he knows the boy appreciated his efforts. Teenagers either don’t appreciate the efforts that their teachers go through, or at least don’t show it. (At least that’s how my mom felt when she was teaching high school.) I think the insecurities came out because it was 3am. I’m normally in bed by 11, 12 at the latest. Don’t worry, I’ll keep writing. I need something to stop me from going crazy at college.
Don't be discouraged SP. I am just writing my first story, and sometimes I get a little disappointed that I work so hard, and no one reviews or seems to care about the story very much. Sometimes people read and enjoy, but are too busy to write a review, or simply couldn't be bothered, but don't let that discourage you. I for one love your stories, and write for yourself. That's what "I" do now! Sometimes I want to quit, but I don't because my writing will improve and eventually someone will read it! :) Nice work! Author's Response: Pandora, Thanks for the review; they are always appreciated, even if they aren't responded to. I glad to know I got the skating thing right, if I hadn’t the whole story kind of falls on its face. Kind of like Harry on the ice. Also, thank you so much for the encouragement. I think all of my insecurity came out because of the late hour since I’m not the kind of person who is normally up at 3am; let alone trying to write a story. I know I should be writing for myself and normally I do, it’s the way I relieve stress between classes or before diving into the mounds of homework and reading I have for school. It would just be nice to have my efforts acknowledged once and while.
While I really liked the beginning with young Harry, I think this story would be more realistic if Harry was a bit older, say 5 or 6. I'm not sure how old people start to ice skate, but it is kind of a dangerous sport because of the sharp blades on the skates, which can easily cut someone. Also, I'm not sure that Harry would have the patience at this age to learn this skill. The part where Severus takes his hands and pulls him around the pond, however, does seem like something a 3 year old Harry could handle though and was a very endearing image. One other recommendation is that you should fix the very first sentence of this fic because it's fragmented and it sets readers off on the wrong foot. It's just more noticeable than other errors because it's at the beginning. Despite all that, I like the idea behind this fic and was happy to see such a patient version of Severus working with young Harry and learning to get along with him. Good work :D. -P.G. Author's Response: P.G. Thanks for the review and advice. I fixed the first sentence. I know Harry might seem a little young, but one of my friends whose family is from New England learned to skate at about 3. But you're right about the danger. The last time I went ice skating, one of my friends actually had his hand cut by the blade of another person's skate.
