wow. Wonderful chapter. The truth is not always easy to hear, especially when we realize we've let someone we admire down.

GoSnape! Get those awful boys who broke into your lab! No, not Hermine, she at least had a good reason... kinda.... sorta...? xD

i really like your more intelligent, darker version of hagrid. he usually ends up as a sort of charicature rather than a true person with depth and history. i'm definitely enjoying the story so far!

Author's Response: Thanks so much1 and I hope you like the rest of it. Hagrid will be in this quite a bit in this story.

I LOVE your interpretation of Hagrid here. He seems a much more rounded character, and done so without changing his fundamental makeup.

Author's Response: Thanks so much1 I loved writing a different sort of Hagrid one who had more of a role to play than in canon.

I liked how you portrayed Hagrid as a mentor to Severus. Bout time he gets some credit where credit is due. I cant wait until Snape finds out Malfoy was behind the invasion in his lab! That should be a GOOD confrontation!

Author's Response: Yes, I always thought there was so much more to Hagrid than met the eye.  He was at Hogwarts when TR was and probably knows a great deal about what goes on at Hogwarts, more than most people.  Oooh when Snape finds out, Malfoy will be dead meat.  So very very dead.  if I were him I'd be planning a funeral.

I really like your Hagrid: he should be given Filch's title "the Care Taker", he's so compassionate and not at all on the 'a bit daft' side - the impression I got from the canon.

Author's Response: Oh, definitely, he watches out for those who need it, students as well as animals.  I neve really agreed with how he was portrayed in the books, I mean if he was smart enough to be a wizard and go to school, then he was smart enough to act like a wise mentor type and not a buffoon.  I'm of the old school that tends to make my wizards intelligent, not that they can't do stupid things, but on the whole they aren't the "duh" and let's just bash things on the head, that's more like the stereotypical warrior mentality.  I figured Hagrid's been around nearly as long as McGonagall and Flitwick, so he should know what's up and because he wasn't a professor, he would see what they missed and be able to notice warning signs in both Sev and Harry, since he was there once too.  Thanks for reading!

Oh, goody...Snape on the warpath--and against Slytherins! Surely Draco should have known that Severus would have protective wards around his lab.

Hagrid is great here. I am glad Severus had someone on his side at school. Though I am not one of the people who think Sev was just a target waiting to be hit. I think he would have given as good as he got, as far as he could considering it was often three on one. I don't believe Remus would have willingly joined in the bullying. I also think that Sev would have used much darker magic than the MAruaders. Sirius' terrible prank that could have led to death being the exception.

    Anyway, this is not canon.

    Great chapter.

    Lesley~

    Author's Response:

And oh, is he going to give it to them good! Draco should have, but he got cocky . . .and now he'll pay for it.

I love Hagrid and always felt he was underrepresented, so I've made him the wise mentor here, so Severus has someone to talk to and understand him.  It just seemed wise to me.

The bullying Marauders are andalways have been, a sore point with me, in canon.  I do agree that Lupin wouldn;t have participated actively in hexing or beating up Severus, i think the bullying was both physical and magical, but sometimes the worst wrong is to watch and do nothing, especially when you know it's wrong.  So he's guilty by association.  The three main perpetrators are  James, Sirius, and Peter, and while I think Severus could handle them okay one and maybe two on one--three on one when you're alone is too much for anyone and you'll end up getting pounded.  I'm speaking from pesonal experience here.  I was tormented for most of my elementary school days by a gang of bullies-boys and girls--popular, arrogant, ones with nothing better to do than pick on the less popular students, like me, the shy bookworm, and even though I knew a few self defense maneuvers, it didn't matter if someone's got your arms or legs pinned and is holding you down.  That description in Snape's Worst Memory made me detest James and Sirius big time--old memories were roused there--and I know what it's like to be in Sev's place.  I don't think the Marauders just played pranks on people--they might have said they did and Dumbledore might have thought that was all they were doing--but I highly doubt it.  And as for Severus knowing dark curses, I'm not following that line, it's just too convenient an excuse, like the old "All Italians are in the Mafia, or know someone" . . .it's prejudice, and I'm Italian American.  Not all Slytherins are bad just because some are evil.  "Well, we were only fooling" is a standard bully line, I heard it so many times and it was a lie.  I tend to think it was the same with the Marauders, they were awful at school but something made them change and grow up.

Wonder what it was . . .I have an idea that I put forth in this story as to why they changed, well Peter  didn't, but the others did.  And that's rare, it doesn't happen that way in RL.  I'd bet those who bullied me are still the same nasty people. Hopefully they don't have kids.

    Thanks!

I particularly like the history between Snape and Hagrid that you've described here. Very interesting that Hagrid made Lily apologize. I'm very curious about what happened after that apology.

    -P.G.

P.S. I don't know if you meant this to be ironic or not, but I for one appreciate irony and really enjoyed the following quote: "Hagrid had taken him into his cottage and cared for him for a week, much as he would a wounded wild animal." Coming from Snape, I loved the irony of this quote.

    Author's Response:

I might just get into that later, I like delving into Sev's past with Lily.

Yes, the irony is deliberate, thanks for noticing!

I love this relationship between Hagrid and Snape! What a wonderful idea!

Author's Response: Thanks, i wanted to try something different and I really like Hagrid, so I figured this was the story to do that.  And Severus needs a mentor besides the old man.

Sure hope Severus gets there soon, poor Harry/hawk can’t stay like that for much longer! Darn Malfoy and his selfishness, leaving the innocent bird like that! And all for what, a juvenile prank on poor Ron? Tsk, tsk, reckless stupidity is what it is, and he deserves to be chewed up by his head of house.

I did enjoy the talk with Hagrid (he‘s an awesome character) and can see why you’d create those slight changes in background/relationship between he and Severus. It sure makes for an interesting and loyal friendship :) And yes, lacking the pensive incident does make things more likely for the potions professor to reconsider Harry.

BTW, I for one am glad you’re posting fast Snapegirl, and appreciate the messages alerting me of your updates as always :)

    Author's Response:

I know, Malfoy is a little spoiled wretch and deserves every minute of misery Snape will dish out to him.

You'll see more of Hagrid and Sev later on and I agree, the pensive really wrecked any chance Severus had of wanting to see Harry as more than James's son, considering how he is about his privacy and all.

I've just posted another chapter too, and it has a lot more of Harry and Sev in it!
