Umm... some of the ingredients they stole might have been really disgusting to collect - Severus could make them get them to replace his stores. Take away their Hogsmeade priveleges? Make them stand up in front of the school and do a presentation on how to care for a hawk? *snort* Now that would be torture... Make them help the House Elves?

OK, I've run out of punishments. Very sweet at the end! Strangely, it was the last line that made me want to cry more than the bit about his mother - though that was very sad too. I like how you split up the hours (especially as each one would have been critical for the hawk) and the transition from very sick to fairing better was very believable - especially Harry's bit.

I certainly wasn't expecting Severus to catch Crabbe helping Harry! I was certain that he'd have run along with the other two, but it was definitely my favourite bit when he was apologising and helping Harry back onto his perch. Severus controlled his temper admirably!

I seem to reviewed this chapter backwards... Oops. Oh well - yes, like in Monty Python and the Holy Grail :D And the way described Severus and Hagrid's relationship sounded spot on! I'm glad your beagle's OK :) Animals certainly know how to make you worry, don't they?

    Author's Response:

Yes, they do, and I know plenty of people who have lost pets recently, so I was terrified.  Luckily, he made it and I am currently petting him as I type with my foot, he's asleep by my feet.

I'm glad I managed to convey all of Severus's feelings and the way an animal can slowly go from being deathly ill to well in a matter of hours.  It's astonishing and scary.

Crabbe was a surprise to me too, but he wanted to help out and I felt it would be nice for once if I portrayed him as a somewhat decent child.  And it was a good thing Severus does know how to control himself, otherwise there would have been one very dead student in his lab.

That last line made me tear up too, poor Sev.

Loved all your ideas and hope you like what I did to them.

Wow, incredible chapter. I feel for Severus, but it's so wonderful that Harry lives!! What a glorious ending. Very deep in emotions and past... amazing.

i think that Draco and everyone should scrub the Owlery and clean all the poop in there.

Thanks for the update! i am loving this story! I wonder if Snape would have died if Harry had died thanks to his unbreakable canon vow.

    Author's Response:

I agree, that sounds like a good way to make the boys think about what they've done wrong.

So glad you liked my little glimpse into Severus's past, the guy's had a tough life and you can't help but feel for him.  Harry has too and perhaps one day Sev wull realise that.

As for the unbreakable vow thing, it's very possible that Severus could have died if Harry had, so it's a wonderful thing that Harry survived.  Thanks!  More bonding next chapter.

    Sanpegirl,
Another wonderful chapter, really enjoying the story. How about sending the boys to do a scary detention with Filch? Something horrible. I'm not sure if you are planning on filch telling Snape about the books he found in the Astronomy tower, but perhaps this could lead to it?

Author's Response: Well, that might happen later, if Filch remembers that he dumped them into the library drop bin.  One never knows.  And I like the idea of Filch being in on the detention, he's very good at intimidation.

::sniffle:: Very well done! Having just lost two cats in the last four months (cancer, and liver failure), it got me all teary-eyed. Of course, when Professor Snape finds out the real identity of his new familiar...oooooh, boy! Flak jacket time! Where's the bomb shelter, he's gonna blow!! =]

Draco, especially, ought to catch it *right* in the teeth, somehow. Snape in full temper hissing a scathing lecture at him until the little snot wets himself in terror would be a good start... Maybe Draco should be made to scrub the Owlry down with his toothbrush? *And* assist Hagrid in caring for some Hippogriffs and such for the rest of the school year, to learn to be respectful to animals, Or Else? Crabbe and Goyle would of course have to be along for the fun; maybe it would convince them to not blindly follow Draco's "great ideas" any more. Heh!

I'm really liking this story. I hope it's not near done yet!

    -Crazy

    Author's Response:

Aww, I'm so sorry to hear that.  It's awful when a pet dies.  My cat died over four years ago and I still can't bring myself to adopt another one.  But all cats and dogs go to heaven over the Rainbow Bridge.

You're exactly right about Severus blowing a gasket when he does find out his hawk's true identity.  He will be understandably upset.

And Draco will be catching hell from Sev, have no fear and so will the other two.  Sev won't be letting them get away with anything, not in this life!

We have a long way to go yet, so I hope you'll continue reading!

Great chapter! I'm so glad Snape got to Harry soon enough.
I think he should take a switch to those idiots. They hurt an innocent animal.

Author's Response: Yes and if CP were permitted at Hogwarts, I'm sure Severus would happily do that.  I despise people who are cruel to animals.

God, I love a good well-written angsty chapter like this. First I was crying because of the usual Severus and Harry kind of angst. Then I read your end-of-chapter notes and really had to weep! Beagles are my favorite breed of dog, so it was extrememly easy for me to imagine myself in your place for that reason. Next--and probably the in-depth reason for my weeping--is we had to put our kitty Millie to sleep, four weeks ago. Her kidney disease took her before her time. So all of this locked into my pre-existing grief and just let it loose! (For which I thank you.)

THAT having been expressed, let me address your issue of proper punishment for Draco, et al. Perhaps an entire month of detentions, not being able to use magic, so they really 'get' what a privilege it is to be able to use it PROPERLY. And the kicker? Snape should require each one of them to write an essay, detailing just WHY it was WRONG for them to do so. (In Draco's case, his underlying assumption he 'deserves' whatever he wants...well, Draco, tell us why that really isn't the case!) Crabbe & Goyle can explain why they mindlessly follow Draco, & why that might not be such a good idea after all. A side benefit might be them realizing that to follow LV might not be such a good idea, either?

Anyway, all just suggestions. It IS your story, m'dear--and quite a good one, besides. Thanks for having updated so soon, and so well!

    Author's Response:

Oh no! You poor thing, what is going on with people and their cats dying? CrazyDragon had two cats put down also and so did my sister, she lost her little kitten two weeks ago.  I know how it feels to lose a pet, my cat died in my arms four years ago from an aneuyrism and no one could do anything.  I haven't gotten a cat since, even though I love them.  As for my Rocky, he's such a sweet thing and I wa sso very glad he managed to get well.  But beagles are tough dogs and I adore them.

yes, i agree with you about all of the punishments and those three really need an attitude adjustment and to learn to think for themselves.

Yeah, great job! I just worry about Severus having to give up his 'familiar' when he finds out that it's a despondent Harry Potter.
Draco and co are rather cruel...perhaps they should have to prepare raw meat to feed the thestrals and harvest flobberworm mucous to feed blast ended Skrewts, etc. What do you think?

Author's Response: Good idea and yes, Sev will be  shocked and upset when he finds out just who his familiar is.

I'm all teary-eyed, so much sadness and then relief at the end... Poor Severus, all he wants is for someone he loves to stay with him for once!

His memory of his mother and then the pleading to the hawk to stay with him really made my heart go out to him. So, I'm quite happy about the mush at the end actually :) The part with the house elf was cute too.

I'm glad your beagle made it, my family lost ours about three years ago :( I loved that dog, she was so sweet and was around ever since I was a baby. But the arthritis in her hips finally became too much for her and we had to put her down.

Now then, moving on from all this sorrow... Punishments for the Slytherin miscreants eh? They should have to help Hagrid take care of some of the more troublesome animals in his CoMC class. Yes, I see it now, Malfoy having to deal with the dreaded blast-ended screwts! *cackles in glee*

    Author's Response:

Yeah, this was a difficult chapter to write, since it hit kind of close to home.

Aww, I'm so sorry! My beagle is like my kid, and I dread the day when he is too sick or in pain that I can't help him anymore.  They are such lovable sweet dogs.

Blast ended skrewts! Yes, Draco is sure to NOT enjoy that punishment.  Thanks for the ideas and hope you enjoy the next chapter.  I just posted it!

Hello again! I'm amazed at how fast you write, but that's good for us readers ;)
I liked Snape nursing the hawk during the night, it sounds like someone so intense would do.
And , for the punishment, I'd make Draco and his friends help Hagrid with all his sickk creatures...

Author's Response: Thanks and I'm glad you're enjoying this.  That's a good idea for a punishment!
