Hmmm - would it bother Harry to pointlessly kill mice... he has experience with potion ingredients and they are just mice - but I think he'd be soft hearted enough to not want to kill anything - and it would freak him out that they were alive one second and 'gone' the next - so good job calling this one. Spot on

Wonder would it be easier, if Snape explaned? For him or for Harry. Poor man...
Thanks for story! Dead curious to see continuation. ))

I DEFINITELY would never do it, but it is a Snape-y thing to do. Loved Snape comforting Harry after his nightmare; he was nice but without getting OOC.

    Author's Response:

Thanks! Yeah I get slightly worried writing the bits like that (comforting Harry) in case it does come across as too soft so I'm glad it didn't seem that way to you...

Hmm yeah, I think being prepared to kill the mice whilst remaining so detached would be impossible for most people but with Snape's past he has been desensitised. He'd never have made it as a deatheater & spy otherwise...

Cheers for reviewing again. I'm half way through the next chapter and will keep at it as soon as I get a sec :)

I just found your story yesterday and have been glued to it! Your Snape is quite realistic; the interactions with Harry are suspenseful and angsty. Love it! In the last chapter you were concerned about people's responses to Snape roughly grabbing Harry's arm, but that is probably quite Canon since he did throw Harry across the room after the Pensieve incident. I believe that making Harry kill the mice would be a very effective punishment and a good way of making he think before he acts in the future. In Canon, he was distraught after using Sectumsempra on Draco and actually seeing what he had done. You've woven a nice complex plot and made an original character, Connor, very interesting. Good job! Looking forward to more.

    Author's Response:

So glad you've been enjoying it:)

Yes I want Snape to seem capable of being harsh, cruel and acting wrongly at times (cos I think he is) but I don't want to make him irredeemable.

I'm pleased you like Connor- there will be more about him soon.

Thanks lots for leaving a review :)

i think it's realistic, Harry's upset at killing the mice. And it wouldn't be SO bad Snape making him do it, except Harry thinks that's his punishment. Which is aweful

    Author's Response:

I agree, as a punishment it would be pretty extreme. Snape's not actually doing it for that reason though, at least not primarily. The next chapter should explain a bit more about this...

    Thanks lots for reviewing:)

I think it's realistic for Harry to be so upset, and also for Snape to try and make him do it.

    Author's Response:

Good, glad you think it's IC then.

Cheers for taking the time to leave a comment :)

Hi again! (Thanks for your lengthy reply a few chapters back btw!)

    Previous chapter:

‘That hurts.’ Harry protested, vainly attempting to prise Snape’s fingers away with his own. ‘Good.’ Snape replied shortly

Wow, I found that really painfull, Harry must have no trust left in Snape, but in this chapter he goes to him for his help with his nightmares. You explainded about how Harry seeks affection, but I find the situation between them quite unbalanced. The physical violence is not the painful aspect here, for me. But Snape's reaction... You manage to evoke a lot of irritation in me, which of course sais someting about your writing and how enganing it is. :-)

The last situation with the mice I do not find unrealistic. I am a bit confused about Snape's motivation. His detention does not appear to be a detention at all! Wonder when Harry finds this out.. It's funny they did not even bother to tell him the name of the spell, if it was that important! (Ah well, that is Snape and Dumbledore for you, a lot of punishment, not much information??)

Hope you update soon! This plotline is quite interesting, your story seems to gained momentum now Harry is back at school.

    Bye,

    Kari

    Author's Response:

The way I think of Snape is that his bark is a hell of a lot worse than his bite. So although he said 'good' when Harry protested about him hurting his arm, he did loosen his grip, give him a healing balm and apologise afterwards. Admittedly grabbing him like that is still completely inexcusable.

In his defence though, Snape genuinely cares a lot about Draco and is (I think understandably) furious with Harry at the time... And it is the only time Snape has lost him temper to the point of hurting Harry physically in the fic despite umteen provocations (albeit the man hasn't exactly been a saint himself).

It's funny because my aim when I started reading this fic was to try and keep Snape IC (mean and a bit of a git although with hidden redeeming qualities)- even as he grows closer to Harry- and I keep worrying that I'm making him too soft:putting up with a lot over the summer, allowing him to break rules (curfew), ignoring his swearing and calling him 'Snape' and he even hugged Harry to all intents and purposes during the last chapter! But he is obviously still coming over as pretty unlikeable so I guess that's something...

Yes Snape will explain more about the spell in the next chapter and it should become clearer about what he's trying to do with the mice.

    Cheers for your comments :)

I'm a vegetarian too, and I could smack Snape for forcing Harry to do that. I love Snape, but if I were Harry, I would stay there all night if need be, but there is no way I'd kill another mouse.

    Yay for Harry!!!

    Great chappie by the way!!

    Author's Response:

lol yeah I think Harry has made his mind up... and he can be pretty stubborn when he wants to be :)

Thanks a lot for reviewing, I'm glad you enjoyed it :)

I do think Harry would be troubled by killing the mice. Killing anything would have troubled him. I think you have Harry's personality just right. Excellent story - can't wait to read more.

    Author's Response:

Thanks for leaving a review and I'm glad you feel it was IC for Harry :)

I'm pleased you're enjoying the story and will do more as soon as I can...
