It's really too bad that no one is noticing that Harry really doesn't want to be there. He won't learn anything, because he doesn't wish to. Hopefully, his unhappiness won't be unnoticed for too much longer.

Very interesting premise. I can see the Dursleys and Snape acting like this for the most part, although, the physical abuse from Vernon doesn't seem to fit with Harry's loyalty towards the Dursleys. Also, since Harry seems to be magical when emotional I think physical abuse would be counter-productive. It would be enough to deny Harry attention and punish him for magic rather than hit him.

    Author's Response:

Well yes you're right the physical abuse isn't a good idea when Harry's got difficulty controlling his magic which is why Vernon stopped. The way I saw it was that the bullying/violence comes naturally to Vernon when he's really mad. (And he is furious because they've literally been waiting for Harry to go and learn how to 'turn his magic off' for years.) To some degree Harry will just take it, he does think he deserves it after all but there comes a point when he can't hold back his panic...

As for Harry's loyalty to the Dursleys - well the hat did say it was twisted and I'm thinking along the lines of Stockholm syndrome here (where a victim develops seemingly irrational behaviour towards someone who keeps them captive).

Okay, so that is definitely abusive. Still, I like the different take you have on the abuse. Not all abuse comes because the adult hates the child. Sometimes they actually think they're doing what is best. That's the saddest part about it. On another, less depressing note, I love this different introduction into Hogwarts. The adults all act in character, yet also in such a way to make Harry feel worse. Poor Harry! He's so confused!

    Author's Response:

Yeah you're they're definately abusive to him - even in chp 1 Harry thought he'd probably be allowed to eat that time- nice!

Their relationships are very twisted. Even where there is some genuine affection/caringness it's spoilt (Vernon pats him on the shoulder but he cringes away/ Vernon feels sorry for him leaving him at the station but gets violent when he comes back).

They are all genuinely terrified of magic though with some justification, (this will be be developed in later chapters) they don't know how to deal with it.

The terrible thing is that the Dursley's will have the potential to hurt Harry so much more seeing as he cares about them and respects what they think...

VERY nice!! This is a really unique take on things! It's like the Dursleys aren't abusive, they just really believe magic is evil and dangerous and so are doing their best to train him out of it. Sure, Harry's still in the cupboard, but it's almost like he's just on time-out. I really like your character interactions, here. Dudley and Petunia defending Harry, explaining that it's not his fault, and Vernon acting as the authority. Sure, things are not great for Harry, and the household is a little weird, but it works. :0)

I'm very curious about where you are going with this story. I'm enjoying it so far and can't wait to see what will happen next.

Author's Response: Thanks! It will be a surprise for me as well as I haven't thought further than the next chapter or two lol
