I watched an interesting documentary on Alzheimer's, which was the inspiration for this story; it is, indeed, a tragic disease and I thought it'd be an interesting twist on the challenge idea to write Severus as suffering from the condition. I've always thought that it's especially important for writers to try to tackle subjects like this because a. it raises awareness and b. it can be cathartic for people whose lives have been touched by similar conditions: I knew someone who has MS and, while he was mentally alert, the symptoms of his condition meant that the formerly articulate, erudite man found conversation difficult.
