This chapter is chilling, haunting. I lived in a small, rural, mid-west town where demon possession was more believed than mental illness. A girl the same age as myself was fighting deep depression, suicidal thoughts, and an eating disorder. Her parents believed their daughter was being attacked by a demon. The church, when asked, referred the parents to a reputable child psychologist for depression. The parents, of course, did not believe the church. They found an exorcist who claimed to once be a priest. A later investigation showed that the man never had been a priest. The girl was exorcised - with insults and being beaten by fists and feet. Although the girl was rescued she died of extreme bruising to her abdomen and internal bleeding. The girl was the first child this exorcist killed; he had brutalised nearly 7 other children while the parents watched.

This chapter is brutal but hardly impossible. You did a very good job. I wept for little Harry who is so charming and sweet... and innocent.

As an unfortunate witness to an exorcism in 'The Bible Belt' of Missouri, I can tell you that this scene, as horrifying as you wrote it, does happen. Thankfully, what I saw what not this horrid, but I've never gone to church since. That was over 30 years ago.

I confess I did not read the author's note before reading this chapter. I had found this story very compelling, but as a Catholic Christian, this chapter offended me deeply. I will not be reading further.

    Author's Response:

That is, of course, your prerogative, and I’m sorry you felt offended. I can only repeat what I said in  my author’s note and several review replies: No discrimination against any faith in particular was implied. Where I live, the majority of the population is Catholic, so most of my friends are Catholic (though I myself am not), I’ve been to Catholic services and know about Catholic tradition. It would be hard for me to be prejudiced against something I know so well, and I have no reason to be.

The thing is, “Exorcism” wasn’t about Catholicism, but about religious fanaticism. Father Pius is a fanatic, and true fanatics of any religion will do the most cruel things, believing them to be “God’s will”. That is something that troubles me deeply, and that is what I had in mind when I wrote the chapter. You see enough of this when you look around in the world, and I’m sorry you felt offended, but I think it’s something that should be addressed, even if it may be a touchy subject with many people.

Sorry about the rant; I didn’t mean to come across as rude, and I’m honestly sorry that “Exorcism” spoiled the story for you. In any case, thank you for letting me know.

In response to your response: I feel the same way about fanatics of every cause, but especially religion, because it's the fanatics that drive people away from the true teachings of the Bible or believers that aren't doing horrible things. Even myself when I was younger before I was a believer, I would see crazy fanatics on the news and say, 'Oh those crazy Christians' and never learn the truth about the situation. Sadly the news usually only reports on the fanatics, so we don't get to see the other side.

    Author's Response:

I know what you mean; I'm sure many Muslims feel the same way, since the news only ever show acts of terrorism or extremism. In fact, I'm glad to say I know many Christians who practice their faith in a tolerant and open way, and I think the majority by far would never condone any act of religiously motivated violence. On the other hand, violence and hate that's spread by religious fanatics is part of the picture, and I find it important to take a close look and try to understand why these psychological mechanisms can influence so many people.

Thank you very much for sharing your thoughts!

i like your story but from this chapter i fear people will look on all christians this way when this just isnt the christian way... catholicism in general has always been really harsh. my husband is a baptist pastor and despite suspicions of some people we know being seriously evil weve never tried to exorcise somebody lol. for us its all abou love and tolerence in the love of christ for all people

    Author's Response:

Thank you for reviewing! Let me say first that I never intended any discrimination against Christians or Catholics (I hope my Author's Note showed that!). Many of my friends are Catholics, and I know they'd never hurt anybody that way.

That being said, "Exorcism" wasn't so much about religion than religious fanaticism. And religious fanatics have done horrible things - not only during the witch hunts of the 17th century, but also with today's attacks on gays, women, "non-believers" etc., anyone whom they feel God has made "inferior". Father Pius is that kind of person - the fact that he believes he is doing "the Lord's work" justifies everything he does in his eyes. I'm not trying to say that all Christians are like that - not at all! But I do feel very troubled about fanatics of all religions, and I think that's why I wrote this chapter the way I did.

Thank you very much for sharing your thoughts!

Great Story. It made me cry and get so mad at Pius bitch that I wanted to strangle him with my bare hands and then rip out his intestines and make him eat them. Tortureing children in any religion is wrong.

Author's Response: It definitely is, and I know what you mean. Religious fanatics make me extremely angry, too. Thank you for reviewing!
