Reviews For For the Greater Good
Author's Response: Thanks! I thought that Harry's blindness will bring them closer together. Dumbledore didn't actually trust Severus. He placed Harry under heavy protection spells so that Severus would not be able to harm him. The moment he heard that Harry was blinded though, he assumed that Severus somehow found a way to bypass the protection spells.
--looks for 11 on the Rating dropdown menu-- Author's Response: Hehehehe!! I just love all the glares I'm getting on this chapter! I'm rubbing my hands together with a big evil smirk on my face (Severus would be so proud!) Dumbledore's reasons for acting this way will be partly revealed in the next chapter. Thanks for the review!!!!!
The ambiguity of Snape’s behaviour towards Harry is maddening, sometimes bordering on schizophrenic (poor Harry!), but some scenes are simply brilliant, breath-taking because of the tension between the two characters and how they struggle. Oh, how they struggle! Despite everything, you’ve managed to make me feel great sympathy for Snape and outrage, in this last chapter, in regard to the treatment Dumbledore subjects him to. I’m as wary as Severus Snape of ”the greater good” at this stage. It’s a clever story that doesn't simplify or sugarcoat things - I appreciate that! I’m impatient to read on and find out who cursed Harry and the truth about James Potter. Please don’t make Dumbledore ruin the frail bond that has formed between Harry and Snape! Author's Response: First of all, let me say thank you for that great review! My greatest pleasure as a writer is to know that someone appreciates my story. Yes, the characters all have reasons for behaving the way they do. Traumatic events in their past affect the way they interact with each other. This is the case with both Dumbledore and Snape. (By the way, their backstories are different to the ones in the books.) In the next chapter, Dumbledore’s reasons for behaving the way he does towards Severus will become clearer. He follows his own twisted logic. But James Potter’s great secret will take a much longer time to come out of hiding. The bond between Harry and Snape will be stretched to the utmost limit as the story goes along but with each trial the bond becomes stronger than ever. Thank you for giving this story a chance!
Author's Response: He will be saved... eventually! :)
I love that you put so many thinking in background of their actions!! Well Dumbledore went from one edge to another, make situation more complicated. I agree with your logic behind it, if someone do something wrong, wanting it or not but you are keeping it against that person. In that case Dumbledore is holding his son mistakes against Severus, cos he had made feelings transfer. I was really... mad (mad - from lack of a better word) that Dumbledore though Sev hexed himself being 13 yo kid without any proof or background really. In case you describes he probable thought of something his son done which was alike and assume Sev did the same, so there is a point why he is thinking it not just because, how he described it "James was such a good boy and you were always bitter". As it is it's unhealthy indeed... but after this mistake maybe someone will see his mistakes? (Hate D still the same, I just don't like him in total ;p) pathological love indeed!! To mother example - mother trust her daughter, she don't trust the world ;) PS. I figured it looked like flaming so I apologize just in case it offend you. And I love the story btw! Looking forward for next chapter. Author's Response: When I respond, I normally match the response to the review. But in your case, I didn’t mean to make it that long! I just started writing and couldn’t stop. By the way, I was having a major case of writer’s block that day. I had a plan for the next chapter but I just couldn’t write it. Then, after responding to your review, I got an idea! I modified my plan slightly and then, I started writing like crazy. Yay!!! Thanks for the inspiration! I don’t like Dumbledore either. Not even in the books. Don’t ask me why. Even I’m not sure. Maybe it’s because he treats Severus’s sacrifice in such a casual way. I still have a long way to go on the next chapter and it’ll probably be another week before it’s completely finished. Thanks so much for your reviews and I definitely wasn’t offended!!
And out of this point - helping bad friends make you rather good then evil, it calls compassion and loyalty. BTW, I hate Dumbledore even more then b4 thanks to you. And this story had to be really good to make me this emotional about it to write comment... I am usually not flaming this much in comments if I write at all... I have spoken to reliese the steam, sorry XD Author's Response: Okay, the thing is Dumbledore's love for Severus has a twisted logic to it. I didn't plan to reveal this until later on in the story but to answer this review properly I have to give you this little piece of information. Dumbledore once had an only son, a Slytherin son who he loved more than everything else in the world but this son was evil. Everybody else knew he was evil and warned Dumbledore but he, blinded by love, refused to believe it. His son continued to torture and kill while Dumbledore defended him. In the end he committed mass murder and was killed by the aurors. Then, even Dumbledore had to admit that his son was evil. Every moment after that Dumbledore regretted his blindness. He wished that he could've seen his son's true nature when he was young so that he might have helped him. He kept thinking, what if I had been more strict with him? What if I had tried to stomp the evil out of him? Would he still be alive then? Could his soul have been saved? Severus, at the age of thirteen, looked so much like his son that Dumbledore instantly grew to love him. (Yes, I agree, maybe I cannot call this real love. Dumbledore loves his son through Severus.) Severus's fascination with the dark arts and his loyalty to the death eaters only reminds Dumbledore even more of his dark son. He thinks that Severus is his second chance, his way to remedy his past mistake. So now, Dumbledore is constantly suspicious of Severus and quick to punish any of his wrongdoings, no matter how small they are. He believes that if he stomps the evil out of him before it has time to develop, Severus's soul will be saved. He thinks that he is helping Severus by punishing him and telling him to suppress the evil side of him. Severus, on the other hand, has been starved of affection and when Dumbledore treats him as a son he grows to love him. From the moment Severus could talk everybody called him evil (even his own mother who was afraid Severus might grow up to be like his evil father). He has heard it so many times in his life that he has come to believe it. He completely believes that he is evil and most of the time, he thinks he deserves whatever punishment he gets from Dumbledore. I agree that the relationship between Dumbledore and Severus is not healthy. It is twisted and destructive. Maybe love is not the correct way to define it but it is the best term I can think of. Not all love is healthy. A mother who confines her daughter to her room all her life because she believes the world is dangerous loves her daughter but that love is not healthy. Incidentally, can't you love someone but not trust them? What if someone you love does something bad? What if your son, your mother or even a best friend does something bad to someone else? Wouldn't you continue to love them? Maybe this is just my Slytherin side talking but I don't think I'd ever stop caring for my mother even if she does something bad. I once had a very close friend (let's call her X for clarity's sake) who didn't have the most flawless character. She slept with the boyfriend of her best friend and then dumped him two weeks later. After that, understandably, she and her best friend of ten years stopped talking to each other. X tells me all this as if it wasn't a big deal and then one day she comes up to me and asks me 'Can I meet your boyfriend?' I say 'Hell no! Love you, hun, but I don't trust you one bit!' So yes, I believe that someone can love a person but not trust them. Don't ever apologise for a well justified opinion! I don't like it when people simply review by saying they hate the story but your review wasn't like that. You didn't like a part of the story and you gave me an honest opinion backed up by a reasonable explanation. I actually enjoyed responding to this review. I love a healthy debate! The world would be a boring place if everyone had the same opinion. Oh gosh, I didn't mean for this response to be so long but I got caught in the moment. Sorry! :)
Please tell me Dumbledore is acting all of this. Please, just confirm my suspicions so I could sleep at night in the future - he would never accuse anyone just like that. And Snape MUST get back to Harry soon. He just... has to. Otherwise I'll go INSANE!! I know it's school going on and everything, and to me it's stressful as well, but... I really need the next chapter right now. I need to know that Dumbledore is acting this, because SOMETHING is telling me he does. Oh, and... do you think you'll write faster during the summer break? Author's Response: Sorry to disappoint you, hon, but wrong guess. Dumbledore really believes that Severus cast the curse. He isn’t a fool but he simply can’t trust Snape. There is a reason for this. Something in Dumbledore’s past causes him to look at Severus and see an evil person. (By the way, my Dumbledore has a different backstory to the one in the books.) Normally, he is very wise and all-knowing but he has a blind spot where Severus and James are concerned. And yes, Severus and Harry will meet again very soon. I’m making you loose sleep? That’s a writer’s dream! *rubs hands together and cackles evilly* Oh, I knew there was a reason the hat put me in Slytherin! I’ve already started the next chapter but it’ll probably take another week to finish. Anyway, I’m sure you’ll find lots of other great fanfics while I’m finishing the chapter. This site is truly great and you joined because of my story? That’s so cool! Actually, here in Italy, summer break is the equivalent of exam time. So instead of relaxing sunny beaches, I get stress filled piles of Physics notes. Yay me! Don’t worry though, I’ve already scheduled time for writing and I’ll still make sure there will be regular updates. Your reviews are really fantastic! They make me jump up and down like a happy bunny! Thanks!
...You are devious writer. :) Author's Response: I'm devious? That's so cool! It's exactly what any Slytherin would want to hear! Well, I wouldn't say Dumbledore is a psycopath. He loves Severus as a son but he can't see beyond the house prejudices. In his eyes, Severus is evil and the sad part is, Severus believes him too. The house elves are loyal to Dumbledore and wouldn't listen to Severus but he'll definitely find another way to contact Harry.
Author's Response: Oh, I'm definitely going to fix this but poor Harry will suffer when his professor doesn't show up!
Author's Response: Thanks for the review! I'm really glad you liked it. Yes, Dumdledore is being a complete idiot. He just can't see past Severus's house. He loves Severus like a son but he still can't trust him. |
