Wait, I’m confused. Why does the true Dark Lord need Slughorn’s real memory if he mind magicked him? And why doesn’t Tom remember where his horcrux would be?
Author's Response: Dumbledore wants Harry to get the Mind Magic memory (so the canon real memory) as a way to keep Harry believing Tom sought out the Dark Arts and horcruxes and that Slughorn helped Tom with that. Dumbledore doesn't know Slughorn broke the Mind Magic and remembers what actually happened, that he tried to help Tom. As for the horcruxes, Dumbledore stole them from Tom and hid them, so that's why Tom doesn't know where they are.
