When Harry finds an injured Snape on his doorstep and must hide him from the Dursleys, he has no idea that this very, very bad day will be the start of something good.

Harry and Snape are thrown together by annoying relatives, a series of strange dreams, and Voldemort's latest hunt for Harry, but their greatest challenge may well be surviving each other. This will be a long summer unless the two can find a way to work together. A slow-burn enemy-to-mentor story.

Alternate 6th summer (and part of the school year): post-OotP; ignores HBP and DH.

You know, I absolutely LOVE your Harry/Snape dialogue. I love how clever and funny and impertinent Harry is, and how incisively Snape disects him. I love how even while Harry is vulnerable, he's not giving any ground without good reason. And I love that Snape is blaming Harry for how angry he is with himself for his failure to see him. And you made that anger so plausible, by having Snape ask Harry why he never corrected him---he's obviously feeling a bit horrified at adding to Harry's abuse, and wants to think that if Harry had told him the truth he would have stopped treating him so badly, and thus would have less to feel guilty about now. Harry pointing that he would never have been believed is no doubt twice as infuriating for being undeniably true.

I didn't think I'd ever enjoy a chapter more than the one where Snape first questions him at the Dursley's house, but this definitely tops it.

    Author's Response:

Thank you, Branwyn! You put thought into this - that makes me so happy! :)

I especially love how you commented that "Harry pointing that he would never have been believed is no doubt twice as infuriating for being undeniably true."  SO true!

I'm so happy I was able to top your previous favorite, even if it pushed my other chapter off of the list.  I'll just have to try to come up with another favorite or two down the road... :)

OH MY GOD MRS FIGG WHO IS GOING TO FEED MR TIBBLES NOW???

Now that is a clever way to force Snape and Harry into a kind of reluctant intimacy. Although I imagine eventually Snape will cotton onto the fact that Harry probably isn't trusting him so much as he's martrying himself by forcing himself to make personal confessions to someone he has no reason to believe will be other than unsympathetic. And then he'll get snarky again.

I was watching Grey's Anatomy season 2 on DVD there's a scene where one character points to another and says "I want you to sit down and try to pretend that you aren't scary and damaged."

I'd like to do the same to your Snape, assuming I could do it from minimum safe distance.

    Anyway, awesome update.

    Author's Response:

MR. TIBBLES! I FORGOT ABOUT HIM!!! BRANWYN, QUICK! YOU BUY THE PLANE TICKETS, I'LL GET THE CAT FOOD!!! (If that doesn't seem quite fair to you, I'll spot for coffee in the airport.)

I don't think Snape's in danger of losing his snarkyness, no matter how much Harry does or does not rub off on him... :)

hehe, I like that image. But yes, say it from a safe distance, please.

It's a One Shot that takes Harry and Snape's first Occlumency lesson in another direction.

    that was quite clever!

AAAARRRGGGGGHHH. That was the most deliciously agonizing thing I've read in ages. I can't tell you how much I've wanted to read a scene EXACTLY like this ever since I read Deathly Hallows. So wonderful. I eagerly anticipate the next installment.

Oh man. That was just heartbreaking. I do love the absolute inventiveness of this story, how ruthlessly the Room delves into Snape and Harry's pasts. When Snape said "you must not tempt me" I actually winced. Poor, brave man.

Dude, that was...hilarious and heartbreaking. I can see canon Snape having a breakdown exactly like that in a situation like this. Well written.

The summer after 5th year, Death Eaters find Harry abandoned in the Dursley house and bring him to Voldemort. Will one particular Death Eater give up his position and his hate to save his enemy's child? Eventual Snape mentors Harry fic.

Two minor corection: you've spelled "time" as "tine" near the beginning of the story, and "can't" as "can" near the end.

Aside from those very minor considerations, however, I am enjoying your story immensely. This chapter in particular was very moving---Harry begging Snape to hit him was very painful, but it felt quite right, for someone in his position. I look very much forward to future installments.

Author's Response: Thanks for the review!  I made the corrections, so no one else should need to suffer through them.  ;-)  I should have a new chapter out tomorrow.

That was rather lovely. :-) I have to point out, though, that Harry *has* seen Snape laugh before---he noticed all of Snape's crooked teeth. Unless I'm confusing this with another fic, but I really don't think I am because Harry was definitely writing in a journal at the time.

I found myself reading through their conversation and wondering if Harry was going to point out that being the living solution to Snape's guilt-complex over Lily is just another way of objectifying him---but I assume they'll cover that at some point. YOU CAN'T HIDE YOUR FEELINGS FOREVER, SEVERUS. *shakes fist*

:-) That was a rather chilling image there, at the end---I do hope Severus isn't too cowed.

    Author's Response: Who, Snapey-kins?  Cowed?  Never!  ;-)
