Looking forward to more! Author's Response: His subconscious is definitely trying, that's for sure! And no, neither one of them are entirely comfortable. They've never been in this type of relationship before. But they're getting there!
I'm glad he was able to express himself when he wrote to Severus saying that it had never done him any good to talk, so why should he bother. And I was glad to see that Severus understood how deeply Harry has been betrayed by the adults who are supposed to be taking care of him. I'm curious to see the aftermath of the Incendio spell, so I hope the next chapter will come quickly! Author's Response: Well, there certainly will be an aftermath regarding the spell -- I'm writing it now. I'm not sure this meets your definition of "quickly" though, lol. Harry *is* incredibly frustrated right now. Combined that with the mix of emotions he's feeling about other things and even Snape starts to feel badly for him ;)
I love how parental Severus has become, and that he's finally able to acknowledge it, too! Author's Response: Oh, I'm so glad you liked it. Severus did admit it, finally, but I think he shocked himself in doing so.
And Harry's speaking again! *big smile here* I suspected Harry's signs for Severus, but it is nice to know for certain. I'm curious to see how things will go now, that they're openly 'father and son.' Author's Response: I think it would have been too much for wee Harry if Severus hadn't come through in the end. I'm afraid that my choice of signs for Snape wasn't all that original, but my excuse is that Harry's 11 and that he's not exactly subtle :) When Harry finds an injured Snape on his doorstep and must hide him from the Dursleys, he has no idea that this very, very bad day will be the start of something good.
Harry and Snape are thrown together by annoying relatives, a series of strange dreams, and Voldemort's latest hunt for Harry, but their greatest challenge may well be surviving each other. This will be a long summer unless the two can find a way to work together. A slow-burn enemy-to-mentor story. Alternate 6th summer (and part of the school year): post-OotP; ignores HBP and DH. I love how they barter questions back and forth, it's a way for them to get to know one another without actually admitting that they want to know each other. I also liked how Harry pointed out that Snape really never gave him much of a chance to learn Occlumency correctly. Maybe it'll hit home with the Potions professor. Looking forward to the next chapter! Author's Response: Thanks for the review! I hope you continue to read & enjoy!
I can't blame Harry a bit for being so upset at the idea of Dumbledore sending him back to the Dursleys, especially now that he knows how truly bad it is. Even in canon, I always felt Dumbledore (much as I love him) should have done more to protect Harry. Harry might have had to have lived at Privet Drive (though I think he'd have been safe at Hogwarts under Dumbledore's protection, too), but certainly Dumbledore could have insisted that the Dursleys treat Harry better. Ah, well, sorry to get off the point. Back to your wonderful story. I have a feeling thought, that Snape will have a say in it too. Either flatly refusing to allow Harry to go back or volunteering to go with him. Now that would be interesting to see--one glower from Snape and the Dursleys would probably be waiting on Harry. And Harry really is seeing the future, hmm? That could be scary, considering what all he's seen. I'm looking forward to the next chapter! Author's Response: Thank you for the review! I am so happy that you like my characterizations - it puts smiles on my face! :) hehe, I like the thought of Snape glowering the Dursleys into submission, especially once they truly know what devious deeds that man is capable of committing...hehe. Stay tuned! I'm done with the next chapter - just need to revise it. It should be up tonight (9/3). I look forward to hearing what you think!
--Harry noticing that Snape's voice was gentle when he spoke to him, and thinking that he'd heard that gentleness before in his dreams. At least, Snape's speaking kindly while Harry's awake now, even if it was just the once. --Dumbledore putting Harry and Snape in their places when they want to snipe at each other. I chuckled aloud at Dumbledore's telling Snape to act the part of the responsible adult. --The idea of McGonagall being confronted with prophesizing Trelawney. --The whole second Prophecy. And to answer your question, Yes, I do believe Snape is really and truly on Harry's side. He'd better be if he knows what's good for him, anyway! I can't wait for the next chapter Author's Response: Thank you for listing examples of what you liked! That always makes my day! :) I'm glad you have faith in Snape. It's hard to do the right thing if no one has faith in you... ;)
I can imagine how frustrating it was for Harry trying to sleep with Dobby constantly popping in to check on him. And when Dobby thought Harry was dead, and Snape rushed in--well, it's just a matter of time for those two, isn't it? Another thing I liked was when they were talking about Harry almost being sorted into Slytherin, and Snape said that Slytherin does not equal bullying. If I were Harry, I'd have been tempted to make some snarky remark about how Snape has always done such a great job of demonstrating that. But I suppose Snape wouldn't have taken it very well...on the other hand, the truth hurts sometimes. Great conversation when Snape admitted that he had been wrong about Harry--and it's just so wonderfully 'Snape-ish' that in the same breath he's trying to also blame Harry for never correcting him ("All right, I was wrong about you, but it's still all your fault!"). Still, Snape went took a big step forward as far as I'm concerned when he fixed the sharp edges of the mirror and gave it back to Harry. Now I'm off to read Chapter 19. Author's Response: Yes - Snape, Snape, Snape...tsk. That's the thing about him that I have the hardest time reconciling if he were to develop a closer relationship with Harry - the bullying, not only of Harry, but of children in general. I'll definitely need to be addressing that a bit more down the road... Thanks! I had wanted Snape to give Harry an indication that his perceptions were beginning to change, but he's so very closed off and not exactly about to give Harry a big hug, so...blaming Harry for it all seemed the next best thing in Snape-land. ;)
The secret code talk was interesting, and I loved when they were discussing Occlumency--how Snape couldn't believe Harry imagined his cupboard, and Harry telling Snape that he still didn't know the important stuff about Harry. He's right, too. But I wonder if Harry ever will trust him enough to let Snape know some of the 'important stuff'? Poor, poor Arabella Figg! What a horrible death, or is there a small hope that she could be rescued in time? And poor Harry. My heart breaks for him and the huge burden of guilt he's carrying. That was another nice Harry and Snape moment, when Snape came back and tried to comfort, or at least distract Harry. Now I can't wait to see what's going to happen in the next chapter! Are you sure Snape won't sing? Not even a little bit? Cause I think a sweet lullaby would help Harry get right to sleep. How about humming? Author's Response: Yes, will Harry ever trust him enough? I can't tell you how much I just want to throw them into a nice mentor/mentee relationship tomorrow, complete with trust and cuddles! Unfortunately, with the history these two share, a snail's pace is about the best I can do. ;) I feel bad for choosing Mrs. Figg, but better her than Lupin, right? Yes, don't yell at me for considering Lupin's demise, however briefly! It didn't happen! I repeat, it didn't happen!!! Anyway, Lupin will be too important to me for other reasons later on... Sing? Hum? To Harry? I think Snape would rather choke on those moldy cabbages boiled in beetle stew.
First---it's so wonderful to see an update! It made my day! There were so many good moments between Harry and Severus, Harry's synopsis of Severus' 'hypothesis' speech, trying to find a way to help Harry focus, Severus helping Harry to wake up, and calling him "Harry" only to have Harry refuse to believe it's him. While this vision was encouraging, it also is quite the challenge for Harry to hear that he has to surrender to Voldemort voluntarily. I guess this is the chance for Harry's Gryffindor courage to shine through. What a terrible burden, though. I hope Voldemort and Death Eaters won't torture him though. Poor kid has already suffered so much. And I love that it's touch that helps Harry Occlude--nice way to ensure that Severus has to be there at bedtime, huh? And I'd love, love, love a sequel once this one is done! Author's Response: I'm so glad I get reviews even when I don't ask nicely! But even so...I'll try to ask nicer in the future. ;) Thanks for the comments! I love that there were so many parts that you like. I can't wait to hear your comments on the next chapter! |
