About me:

Hi, everyone.  I'm a long-time HP fan, but new to reading and writing HP fanfics.  Of course Harry and Severus are favorites, but I really like almost all the characters.

I'm a preschool teacher, and happily married with two children who also love HP.  Other things to know about me?  Hmm, I love horseback riding, reading, and spending time with my family and friends.  I love coming to talk with other fans on the internet, and I love reading fanfics.

I can't remember if I've reviewed this story before, but if I haven't, then I apologise! I've really been enjoying it, and you've done such a marvelous job on the depth of the characters, and keeping the plot intriguing.

I have mixed feelings about Snape giving Harry this detention, I admit. And please know that this is not a criticism of your writing at all. I can see Snape reacting this way so it's very believable. He is both insecure and proud, and I think he, in particular, would be very sensitive about being shown respect.

I also want to say that I taught third-grade for eight years and I have two children of my own, so I do think it's very important for young people to respect adults in general.

But, all that being said, there is such a thing as mutual respect, too. A teacher also needs to respect their students, in the sense that they are human beings who deserve to be treated fairly and politely...not saying that they should be allowed to get away with things, but no child deserves to be mocked and emotionally abused the way Snape has treated Harry until very recently. Snape has been horrible and unfair to Harry for years...even he will admit that now. I think his former treatment of Harry was emotional abuse and even just a few chapters ago, he lashed out and struck Harry.

I know that they're trying to move past all that and establish a better relationship, which is wonderful, but I guess I think Snape still needs to acknowledge how deeply he has harmed Harry and that he needs to make amends. He is insisting that Harry respect him as a professor, and acknowledge his authority...but a professor who abuses that authority as much as Snape has may not deserve the respect. I guess I just think Snape hasn't quite fully grasped that yet, and I think he should be a little more remorseful himself because his behavior towards Harry has been a hundred times worse than Harry's treatment towards him.

But, like I said, please don't think I'm criticising your story or your writing, because Snape is still evolving and he still has a ways to go before he's really emotionally mature. And I do think he's struggling to figure out how to establish a relationship with Harry, too. It's unexplored territory for both of them.

I also really like how you've portrayed Harry's confusion about how to accept an adult into his life, having a position of authority over him, without being abusive. That's very realistic.

Another thing I like a lot is how close Harry, Ron, and Hermione are in your fic. I love the Trio.

And it was very nice of Snape to give Harry the photo of his grandparents.

    I'm looking forward to more!

I'm so happy you updated again! What a wonderful chapter...I think it is the best one yet.

I'm curious to know if Harry is right about Dumbledore being in the Room of Requirement. I kind of think he is. Harry's instincts are usually good, and I can just imagine Dumbledore sitting up there waiting for Harry to come to him.

I loved that Harry is concerned for him anyway, in spite of the pain he has caused and Harry's justifiable anger at him. I also loved how Snape went to check for Harry without even pausing.

And the whole part where Snape almost lost control and beat Harry...but didn't, and the aftermath was brilliant. Snape should be shaken and ashamed, and I'm so glad that he was. But Harry is right: the fact that he didn't, that he stopped himself, is even more important. Snape can grow, change, and become someone better, and he's already taken the first steps whether he realises it or not.

I'm so eager for the next chapter! Hope real life is co-operative, lol! Thank you for writing.

That was a beautiful chapter! I love how supportive Ron and Hermione are and how they are so protective and devoted to Harry. Their surnames may not be Potter, but they are Harry's family.

They made some interesting points about Harry's relationship with Snape and I was actually glad to see Harry hesitating and giving it some thought. I want Snape and Harry to become close and to heal one another, but Snape does seem rather unstable right and I don't want Harry to be a door mat for him either. Snape's conduct the other night was inexcusable. I know he feels horrible about it, but he does have to learn to let go of some of his anger. Harry's not the only one who needs Healing.

I'm curious about what's up with Dumbledore. If he's really hiding out in the Room, if something has happened to him. Because if he is healthy and all, then it seems irresponsible of him to abdicate his duties, both to the school and to Snape and Harry, and hide out.

I'm worried about Harry ignoring Umbridge's summons, too. I hope he'll be able to get away with saying he didn't hear her, but she is so vindictive and petty.

I was so happy to see a new update and I'm so eager for the next chapter.

I love this story! There are so many wonderful scenes, I hardly know where to start. But I'll try...

I loved how Harry got up the courage to confide in Severus, and how even though he didn't like Harry at that point, Severus did the right thing and made sure Harry wouldn't be going back.

I adored the scene where Ron and Hermione come to Harry in the dorm, and he tells them about the abuse and they comfort him. They truly are a family, and for all the losses he's suffered, Harry was blessed when he found them.

I love all the memories from the past, and how Lily brought Severus and James together, and how it worked out that Severus is Harry's dad, too. I'm so happy that Harry really does have someone of his own, who cares and will protect him now.

I loved how Severus reached out for him, and they've begun the first steps towards building a better relationship.

You really should write a sequel, you know. This is too good to stop here!

Harry is 7 years old and treated literally like a dog by the Dursleys. Will he be rescued by the wizarding world? Will he ever be fit to take on the mantle of The Boy Who Lived? Now Complete!

Congratulations on "Whelp" being a featured story! I just read it and it certainly deserves to be. It's a wonderful story.

The first chapters were so well-written that they were actually hard for me to read. I could feel Harry's pain, and it was awful to think of him being treated so terribly. Thank goodness Severus came and rescued him!

I loved how you portrayed Severus' doubts and feelings of inadequacy as he tries to help Harry heal, and provide him with the love and care he desperately needs.

And poor little Harry. I just want to hug and hug him. He's so fragile and afraid. But it's lovely to see him slowly coming to trust his new father and to be happy as a child should be.

Interesting to see Draco and Harry being friends, and I can't wait to see how that will develop.

I'm so excited that you're going to write a sequel, too! I'll be looking out for it!

The summer after 5th year, Death Eaters find Harry abandoned in the Dursley house and bring him to Voldemort. Will one particular Death Eater give up his position and his hate to save his enemy's child? Eventual Snape mentors Harry fic.

Wow, this is another incredible story! How do you do it? I'm so impressed and at how quickly you keep updating all your stories.

This one is just heartbreakingly beautiful, while giving me cold chills at times too. Parts of it were so intense, I could barely keep reading. And even though I know it's wrong, I really want Malfoy and Voldemort to suffer--really, really suffer--for what they have done to Harry. No one deserves it more than those two!

Harry's recovery is brilliantly portrayed, and I love how Snape has been there for him and has come to care for him. He's providing the structure and stability, as well as the comfort that Harry needs to heal.

The scene where they have left Diagon Alley after running into Malfoy, and Snape realizes that Harry knows he is not a killer, and is so afraid of failing everyone, is just so emotional--sad, sweet, wonderful, and sad again. I'm gushing, I know, but it really touched me.

I loved how Snape held Harry and promised him that he wasn't alone, and Harry responded that he always faced Voldemort alone. That scene is the one that broke my heart most of all because it's always been true, but I hope Harry won't have to be alone anymore.

The interview with the caseworker was also very well done. Bet Harry and Snape never thought they'd be in that situation, even a few weeks earlier.

I can't wait for the next chapter!

Wow, I don't know what to say after reading this chapter. What a powerful, emotional punch!

Part of me is very upset with Harry. What was he thinking to mentally attack another person in such a way? Does he realize that he's stooped to the same level as the people who hurt him?

But another part of me says that Dumbledore is at least partially to blame for a lot of Harry's pain, and he's been rather cavalier about it.

I also think that perhaps everyone, even Snape, who probably knows Harry better than anyone at this point, is expecting him to recover too fast. Not only from the last horrific assualt, but from all the years of abuse he's suffered.

Harry is just a mass of pain and rage right now. He may have begun to heal, but I think it's still going to be a long time before all those horrible feelings are really better.

When he came face to face with Dumbledore, he saw someone he could blame for all the bad things that have happened. His own pain is too strong for him to be rational, and he lashed out.

I certainly hope Dumbledore is all right, and I can understand how angry Snape is, as I've already said, but I do think Harry may not be completely to blame for his actions, and I hope Snape can try to understand why Harry acted the way he did, too.

    Looking forward to more!

    Author's Response:

    >>Harry is just a mass of pain and rage right now. He may have begun to heal, but I think it's still going to be a long time before all those horrible feelings are really better.

Yes, exactly.  I couldn't have said it better myself.  Thank you for your incisive review!

I really, really loved this chapter! Snape is handling the situation pretty well, I think. After the last chapter, I was afraid he was just going to be too angry, and he was at first, when he didn't answer when Harry was calling him. But when he saw how badly affected Harry was, he calmed down a bit, and went to him. I think he may be understanding the extensive damage done to Harry better now.

I'm so glad Dumbledore was able to empathize with Harry, too, and feel compassion, not just react in anger. It's a good thing that he's not going to push Harry, but allow him the time he needs.

It really doesn't seem like Harry will be recovered enough to begin classes on time right now. Can you imagine how he'd react to Draco Malfoy? But if he isn't ready, I hope Harry won't see not meeting this goal as a failure, or if he does, that Snape will be able to help him realize that he's been hurt badly, and you can't put a time limit on the recovery process.

    Looking forward to more!

Aw, such a lovely chapter. I'm so glad to see Severus and Harry bonding, or at least being able to show that they are more relaxed and able to show their feelings, since they've been bonding for quite a time now. It's like now there's some payoff for all the angst and struggles.

Obviously, Severus has been gradually coming to care for Harry all along, but now he's acknowledging it to himself--admitting he felt pain in his heart at watching Harry suffer through the past few days, getting him the book, and reassuring him that Sirius did indeed care for him.

I don't believe Sirius could have been the guardian Harry needs--he was too damaged by his own arrested development. But Sirius did give Harry something he'd never had before and desperately needed--a parent figure who loved him and wanted to be with him. I was glad to see Severus understand that Harry still needed to know that, and that he could put aside his own animosity for Sirius to reassure Harry.

Btw, I love the term 'dogfather.' That's so perfectly 'Snape-ish.' And the final bit, about Severus not being in competition with Sirius, not even a little bit, and about Harry's smile lightening Severus' mood, well, that was just wonderful!

I'm saddened by the thought that this story is coming to an end, and I definitely would love a sequel.

It's nice to see the relationship blossoming between Severus and Harry. I love protective Severus, and I think he and Harry are very good for one another, which brings me to the next point--when Severus chuckled at something and Harry noticed how he'd been more relaxed lately. I'm sure it's a huge relief for him not to have to spy for Voldy any longer, but I believe that Harry is the main reason Severus is enjoying life a bit more. Severus has indeed done a great deal for Harry the past weeks, but Harry is giving him back something, too. Something more ephemereal, perhaps. But I think Severus will learn a lot about love and forgiveness and friendship from Harry.

It was great to see Harry and Remus getting along well again, too, and I'd love to see Harry and Dumbledore coming face to face again, and Harry meeting with his friends. A lot of people would be a bit awkward around someone who's suffered as Harry has, but I have faith in Ron and Hermione and their love for Harry.

And of course, I'd love to see lots more of Harry and Severus. Lots and lots more! So yes, I'm really hoping there's going to be a sequel!
