About me:

Hi, everyone.  I'm a long-time HP fan, but new to reading and writing HP fanfics.  Of course Harry and Severus are favorites, but I really like almost all the characters.

I'm a preschool teacher, and happily married with two children who also love HP.  Other things to know about me?  Hmm, I love horseback riding, reading, and spending time with my family and friends.  I love coming to talk with other fans on the internet, and I love reading fanfics.

As a first year, Harry is sorted into Slytherin instead of Gryffindor, and no one is more surprised than his new Head of House.

This is such a lovely chapter! I'm so glad that Harry had a happy Christmas (well, right up to the spat with Ron, anyway). He really deserves a wonderful holiday, if any child does.

His joy over his first real gifts is so sweet, and I'm glad too that Severus made an exception to his rule and gave Harry a gift. I loved that Harry gave Severus a gift, too, though I was expecting him to do so, and the fact that it was a drawing of Sev, just like Lily's, made it just perfect.

It's just like Severus, too, to want to help shield Harry from Ron's taunts, but to make things worse instead. Sev means well, but he doesn't always have the experience in personal relationships to know the best way to handle these things. It probably would have been better to let Harry handle Ron on his own, and see if he could bring Ron around.

Now I'm really eager to see what happens next, and to see their Occlumency lesson.

    Hope you're feeling well!

Oh, I was so happy to see that you'd posted a new chapter! It was really lovely, too!

I like how you've given Harry a talent besides Quidditch and his magical abilities. The way you had him develop his skill and his pleasure in drawing was very believable. It makes sense that he'd have to do something during all those hours he was locked in his cupboard...whether it was drawing, daydreaming, or some other something. It's only a wonder he didn't go insane, come to think of it.

I loved, loved, loved how uncertain Harry was about whether he should give Severus a present (and I'm so happy that he did, since it did mean a lot to Sev), and how excited he was about receiving some gifts for himself. That was always such a sweet sad little scene for me in both the book and the movie. Neither Harry nor Severus has much experience in giving or recieving presents, another thing they have in common. But perhaps things will be different for both of them now.

I liked how Harry is developing a friendship with Hermione and I hope he can with Ron, too. I enjoy his interactions with Millie, Teddy, and Draco, too.

It was really very mature and loyal of Harry to see that Severus was trying to help him in the snit with Ron when they were playing chess. I liked that.

I'm curious about the Baron's reaction to Voldemort. He seemed unusually fearful, especially for a ghost. And I can't wait for Harry and Severus to begin Occlumency. Hopefully, it will go better than it did in canon for them!

Again, it was a wonderful chapter and I'm looking forward to more! Hope you feel well and stay well!

    Author's Response:

Thanks, Kristeh!  I'm glad you agreed on the natural outcome of Harry spending hours and hours in a confined space -- as you said, I can't imagine how he could keep from going stark raving mad if he didn't have a hobby like that; I certainly would have.  As for Occlumency . . . well, the lessons in this fic could hardly go worse than in canon, eh?  ;-)  Thanks for your well wishes, too, it means a lot to me.

I was so happy again to see another update! It's interesting that Harry has such power, and it would be a danger to him. Of course Voldemort would want Harry's power for his own, and would definately be desperate to kill someone with the ability to overcome him if he couldn't tap the power for himself. But others would also be tempted by Harry's power, too. I think Severus is going to have his work cut out for him in trying to protect Harry.

I liked how Severus was beginning to wonder about how Harry's talents mirror Voldemort's, and how Voldemort vanished, leaving Harry with the scar, in their first encounter. Hints of Harry being a horcrux perhaps? And if so, when will Severus figure it out? I imagine it will be devestating for him.

I'm curious to see the outcome of this lesson. Severus has learned the truth, and I believe Harry may be very unsettled at the whole prospect of having Severus in his mind...I know I would be very upset at anyone, even someone I cared for, having access to my private thoughts. Of course it is necessary, but I still think it would be hard to deal with.

    Looking forward to more!

Author's Response: Thank you, Kristeh!  Yes, Snapw will have his hands full keeping Harry safe.  And I am setting up the possibility that Harry's extreme amount of power is because he got a bunch from Voldie, and could be a horcrux.  And yes, Harry's not keen on having Snape in his head, but Snape's not keen on being lied to, so they're even!  :-)  Or not. . . . I hope to have a new chappie out soon, but I'm working hard on the next one for Before the Dawn.

Wonderful chapter! It was an interesting Occlumency lesson, and it was really very nice of Severus to show Harry the drawing his mother had done. That meant so much to Harry, and what meant even more was when Severus let him know how much he valued Harry's own drawing.

I'm glad to see Ron beginning to come around. I like Harry's Slytherin friends a lot, but I like Ron and Hermione too, and it's good for him to have friends in both Houses.

I felt so sad for Harry when he saw his family in the Mirror of Erised. That's always been one of the most poignant scenes in the whole saga to me, and I really like how you added the extended family and not only his parents. And Severus, too, with him and James apparently getting along. I love how Harry is considering Severus as part of his family, and it's a nice counterpoint to the fact that Severus also feels paternal towards Harry. But hopefully, Harry can have Severus as a parent figure in this universe.

    Fantastic job as always!

Author's Response: Harry seeing his extended family in the mirror of Erised is in the original, actually.  I took the description from the book almost whole cloth.  But the bit about Severus, obviously that was me.  :-)  Ron and he will certainly be more civil after this experience, and yes, it's good for Harry to have friends in both (maybe even all) Houses.  That's what the Hat says, anyway, lol.  THank you for reviewing, Kristeh, as always.

Wonderful chapter! I love the effects Harry is having on Severus, even if Sev doesn't see it yet.

The mirror scene was very sad and poignant, of course, and yet I couldn't help but feel hope for both Harry and Severus, because while it is tragically true that they have lost loved ones, but they do have each other now. What they want is a family. Harry already has seen Severus as part of his family through the mirror, and I imagine that if Severus did look into it, he might see Harry there, too. So even though they can't bring back the people they've lost, they can still have part of their heart's desire with one another.

You know, I'm not normally a Dumbledore hater...I disagree with some of his decisions in canon and I know he made mistakes, probably the worst was condemning Harry to live with the Dursleys and not checking up on him. But I do think he was good at heart in canon, just in a very tough position. He reminds me of the saying that in war, a lot of times the choices aren't between good and bad; the choices are between bad and worse. It is a morally precarious place and of course Dumbledore erred sometimes.

Well, all of that was to say that even though I disagree (vehemently) with some of his decisions, I do often feel a degree of sympathy for him too, and I've alway portrayed him in a fairly good light in my own story...but I just detest Dumbledore in BBS! And that is meant as a huge compliment to your writing skills and ability to portray different sides of a character.

I'm looking forward to the next chapter, of whichever story is coming up next!

    Author's Response:

Thanks for reviewing, Kristeh!  Dumbledore's a tough one for me sometimes . . . one of my favorite sayings is "Question Authority," and Dumbles seems to me to be the kind of person that saying was written for.  IMO, he has a terribly stringent view of the world, very strongly in favor of his own perceptions, while not sometimes seeing the trees (the minutiae of the people whose lives he manipulates) for the forest (his battle between good and evil.)  But other times, he really seems to care for those who are being hurt by his machinations.  I tend to write him as more cognizant of -- but more hardhearted about -- the results of his deeds than he was portrayed in canon, but I believe, as a very intelligent man, he was more aware of the results of his actions (or lack thereof) than he claimed to be. He had to.

And you're absolutely right about Snape and Harry and the mirror. :D

Another wonderful chapter, as always! I really enjoyed it, though it is sad to see Harry and Severus' relationship fall apart like this. But I do understand completely why Harry is so suspicious and finds it difficult to trust. Even after all they've been through, Harry has been disappointed and betrayed by adults so often that it's all but impossible for him to trust one.

I feel so badly for poor Severus, though. Trust doesn't come easily for him either, and he's so hurt by Harry now. When Harry said...well, nodded actually...that he didn't want to stay with Severus, my heart just broke at the thought of how Severus felt.

Of course he's going about solving the problem in the wrong way, but it would be hard for him to know what to do since he doesn't have a clue what Harry's problem is. Good thinking on his part though, to wonder if it's connected to the Avery incident. I'm sure Harry will eventually have some baggage from that to deal with.

Now I'm looking forward to the next chapter, but as you've said that the reason for Harry and Severus having problems is so that Harry will go after the stone, I really, really want for all that to happen. Because of course you're going to have a wonderful reconciliation scene then, right? Right? I can't wait for it!

Oh, and I do hope you'll write about Severus going with Harry to stay at the Dursleys, too. That has lots of potential, lol!

Author's Response: Thank you, Kristeh!  It was honestly hard for me to write the part of Harry rejecting Severus' offer; I felt so bad for Sev, too!  But the getting the stone part will be fun . . . I imagine there to be about 5 or 6 more chapters of this story, with one of them being what will likely happen to Harry over the summer . . . but not the summer itself.  We'll save that for Book 2, which I have no idea what to name . . .

Oh, I'm sorry to see this story end, but if you're going on with second-year, then that's wonderful!

It was a very good chapter! I love the way you've incorporated the Baron into this story and having him help Harry through was ingenious. I especially loved the ending with Severus pleading with Harry and caring for him. I can't wait to read the next chapter!

Author's Response: Thanks, Kristeh!  Book Two will have the summer interlude, but the last couple chapters of Book One will at least discuss where Harry will be for the summer.  The Baron sort of shoved his way in to the chapter, kinda like he took over for Harry.  :)

I'm glad you had a great time in Ireland! My family is leaving tomorrow on vacation to DisneyWorld and I'm so tired from getting ready. So this will be a short review, I'm afraid.

But lovely, lovely interaction between Severus and Harry. I'm so happy that everything is straightened out between them now. Looking forward to Year 2!

Author's Response: Oooh, DisneyWorld!  Fun, fun, fun!  I went when I was 10 and it was the best trip ever . . . until I went backpacking thru Europe when I was 22.  :)  Thanks for the review; I'm hard at work on chapter 51!

Congratulations on finishing Year One! It's a fantastic story. Interesting switch on the end of year feast, and I liked how Severus was upset about winning, how that tied into his caring for Harry, and that Harry was able to recognize that, too.

I'm so looking forward to "Before the Dawn" and to "Year Two". Fraid I'm not much help with titles, though. I'm not good with them. I'd probably make it easy on myself and just call it "BBS: Year Two", lol.

    Author's Response:

Thanks for reviewing!  I think I'm going to go with "The Heir of Slytherin" for Year Two because many people in "Chamber of Secrets" thought Harry was the heir, and now that he's actually in Slytherin House, even more will believe it.  Maybe it'll even be true.  :)

Harry sat cross-legged on the floor, staring at paint chips. Did there have to be so many colours? And not only colours, but shades and tints of colours! Oneshot after TDH.

I really liked this story. It's great to see Harry post-Voldemort, and how he can finally relax and enjoy his life and his friends.

I liked Harry thinking how hanging out was such a "teenage" thing to do, because he's in an odd position here. He is quite young, still a teenager himself, but he's accomplished his life's goal so to speak. He's been through so much and has had to grow up fast, so he's very mature for his age.

That maturity will help him to adjust, too. He certainly deserves some time off, and I wouldn't blame him one bit for taking things easy for a while. But I have no doubts that Harry will soon set some new goals for himself, and get on with the business of living. He has everything to live for now.

I can definitely see Harry settling in Hogsmeade. As you said, it's purely part of the Wizarding World, and Harry would revel in that. Also, it's close to Hogwarts and it's part of Harry past.

Harry choosing the green paint was a nice compliment to Snape (as well as Lily of course), and I would love to see you write more!

    Author's Response:

Your review made me smile, so thank you, first of all.

I'm glad you noticed and love some of the small little details; I tend to pay special attention to those in fanfics, because each character has small little details that make them who they are and it's both fun and challenging to write. I'm with you on Harry's maturity; he is still quite young, but he's been forced to grow up because of all he's gone through. And Harry does seem like the type of person who would love living in the Wizarding World; after being cut off for the first eleven years of his life, and then every summer.

Thanks again for the review, it brought a smile to my face after a long day; something which was sorely needed.
