This is a wonderful chapter. I love how Severus is able to anticipate Harry's needs and accepts the role of protector. Dumbledore's seemingly well intentioned habit of giving second chances to everyone, such as he did for Sirius, looks very different when it is viewed from this perspective. Without demonizing the Headmaster, you create a strong basis for the bond to become even closer between Harry and Severus. Great job!

Author's Response: I think Snape sees a little of himself in Harry, which is why he's not so bad at anticipating Harry's needs, like you say.   And yeah, Dumbledore has good intentions, but doesn't always see the other side.

Sequel to A Time and Place to Grow - After spending a summer with Snape, Harry begins his sixth year at Hogwarts. But Snape is keeping an eye and a firm hand on him, and a new teacher, split loyalties and a looming fight with the Dark Lord await Harry.

Oh, this is so sad, funny, but sad. Poor Snape, screwing up after they did so well, and Harry doing so well in class and seeing Hermione's jealousy flare up and having to tip toe around her and Ron, only to find out that Draco is "spying" on him. It is a testament to how much you make us care that this is so frustrating! I hope it gets worked out soon! Poor Harry and Snape...and Draco too.

When Harry finds an injured Snape on his doorstep and must hide him from the Dursleys, he has no idea that this very, very bad day will be the start of something good.

Harry and Snape are thrown together by annoying relatives, a series of strange dreams, and Voldemort's latest hunt for Harry, but their greatest challenge may well be surviving each other. This will be a long summer unless the two can find a way to work together. A slow-burn enemy-to-mentor story.

Alternate 6th summer (and part of the school year): post-OotP; ignores HBP and DH.

Excellent chapter. I just discovered this story this weekend and am so happy to see an update.

I'm glad something has finally reached Harry, as he was beginning to get on my nerves, as canon Harry tends to do. It is sad though that it had to happen to such a sweet person. Your Snape is wonderfully portrayed. I would love to see the two of them start to get closer. The mirror episode was perfect and I expected Harry to soften more, but he is being especially stubborn and doesn't seem to be trying very hard. If I were Snape, I would be concerned about the future of the wizarding world about now also.
While your Harry makes sense, one still needs to believe that this young man can save everyone...with this mentor. I believe in the mentor that you've portrayed, I trust in you to make me believe in the savior given the great job you've done thus far!
    Looking forward to more!

    Author's Response:

I am so happy you discovered and like my story!

I make no apologies for Harry - he'll have to do so himself. ;)  As much as I don't want you to get too frustrated with Harry, I hope you'll excuse me for being kind of glad that you are.  See, when I started this fic, I knew right off that I didn't want him to have everything together.  He is smart, empathetic, and has great potential for power.  BUT he's a kid, with all the immaturity, stubborness, impulsiveness that implies.  My purpose for portraying him as such (other than it simply being realistic of someone his age) is this:

If Harry had it all together...if you could already see the perfect savior of the wizarding world in his 16-year old self...

What would he need Snape for?

Snape and Harry are locked in the Room of Requirement by Dumbledore. Harry's magic works, and Snape's doesn't. Will they kill each other? In response to the 72-Hour Challenge.

No, Dumbledore wasn't masterful, this chapter was! Many fic make the reader really dislike the old manipulator, but few manage to distill it into a few paragraphs as well as this one. He has maneuvered Snape back into caring, by getting Harry to take the shocking steps HE did with the snake and the sword, and then, when brave Harry, true to form, refuses to leave, noble Snape masterfully proves just how Slytherin he really is...believing that he is supposed to reveal his actions so many years ago to Harry in order to get Harry to leave without him.
So, Harry is truly Gryffindor, with a strong smattering of the Slytherin; Snape shows how noble the true Slytherin can be, and Dumbledore plays with people's lives like they are pieces in a Wizard's Chess game.
    Great story telling!

I loved this chapter, and Harry's epiphany, if you will, of Dumbledore's intent, and why he, Harry, had to go back for Snape instead. The final scene was so poignant. Much more so, to me, than the scene in Deathly Hallows. Great work! I look forward to the two men confronting Dumbledore soon.

The summer after 5th year, Death Eaters find Harry abandoned in the Dursley house and bring him to Voldemort. Will one particular Death Eater give up his position and his hate to save his enemy's child? Eventual Snape mentors Harry fic.

Wonderful chapter. Severus' understanding of Harry, and his increasing willingness to meet him more than half way is such a pleasure to see. After so many painful weeks, these positive steps are all the sweeter, for them and the readers!
You just keep getting better and better in each of your stories!

I think having the improved Severus and this Harry in the universe we know...and leaving bitter Severus with an exculpated cheery Sirius as a roomate and Mrs. Hammond dropping by all the time... would be wonderful justice! Lily is gone to the next great adventure with James, I say leave her there. In both realities she died with him so she is better left dead. Severus will have enough to cope with when the Dark Lord returns.

Very satisfying chapter. I was thinking that it sets up a dilemma for Harry but you avoid that by making the Harry in this world a year younger. He can save this Ginny, but without knowing that he may be condemning Sirius in the other reality! Of course, had Snape stayed longer.... One wonders if the other Dumbledore will give up HIS Harry. He knows the prophecy...or is this a prophecy less world? So many questions! I am glad that Harry at least got to choose the world that gave him a family, without feeling as though he were neglecting his saving people thing.

As a first year, Harry is sorted into Slytherin instead of Gryffindor, and no one is more surprised than his new Head of House.

This young Harry is a complex, fascinating character. I am enjoying his growing friendship with Teddy--whose knowledge of detecting spells is intriguing in an eleven year old. I would like to see an alliance with Draco also, which I do hope the candy doesn't ruin! (I worry, I worry! Which means you are very good at keeping us as paranoid as Moody). Great scene at the end with Snape and Harry, to which the Baron's pithy commentary always adds that little something. So happy the next chapter is done already!

Excellent variation on this theme of a Snape visit to the Dursleys. Understated but effective. Your understanding of how Snape's Slytherin mind works shows in the choices you have him make here. He keeps his control and never loses focus of his goals, despite his wish for vindication. The line "the womb from whence the Slug's manners were born" was perfect! So was his slipping in a nightmare hex...even the most perfect control has its limits and it fits the rule about not getting caught! Overall a great chapter.
