| Happily married for 20 years, this coming October. Two lovely daughters, four lovely grandkids. I always knew Snape was the most interesting character in the series! I love good writing, especially with good spelling and good grammar. [Report This]

AU. Just after midnight, in a hut on a rock in the sea, Harry Potter celebrated his eleventh birthday and, instead of Hagrid, was collected by Severus Snape to be brought into the world of magic. Mild abuse, neglect.

Are you ever going to have things improve for Harry, or is this story to be a study in everything always staying wrong?

So is Severus EVER going to use his supposedly big brain, or Legilimency, or his spying powers of observation to honestly notice any TRUTH about Harry? Or is Snape only going to stay seeping in his Potter-prejudice forever?

Well. This is a very entertaining story, which is why I kept reading. But it's SO negative, so unhappy, that the fact it's ended doesn't seem so bad. You (and Snape and Dumbledore) can't torture Harry if you aren't writing about him...
You mis-typed the wrong homonym: "'Come.' He was guided to the footstool and handed a VILE" should be amended.
Author's Response: Thanks. I did know that, but never quite got around to fixing it.
Lovely chapter; really well done.
Author's Response: Thanks!
What a wonderful story! I've really enjoyed reading this, straight through in two sittings!
Author's Response: I'm so glad you liked it, and it is the ultimate compliment when someone reads a story with so few breaks :)
You may be criticized for the choice of how Severus handles this, but I personally think you're right. Severus is a professional who works with children. Even if he's not usually crazy about them, he still has properly protective instincts. Visiting a site like this is an objectifying way of viewing 'the other side' of burning. It removes the pretty, fascinating way flames look, and shows--as objectively as possible--what can happen. Harry could have ignored words, no matter how impassioned. Severus needed him to know WHY this was important, and in a way Harry couldn't ignore.
Author's Response: Thank you! You've managed to put into words exactly the rationale I was trying to get at. Harry needed to see what could happen if he played with dangerous spells. The words would not have been enough. As we know too well, our young protaganist tends to rush off even when warned.
I don't remember how many years ago I first read this story (and specifically this chapter), but I know I still have the same reaction to it. As hard, as difficult as Snape's lesson was for Harry, it was RIGHT. Only seeing the real effects of mis-handled Incendio spells would show Harry the truth of what could happen, just how serious it all was, that it was indeed nothing to play with. Yes, Severus will have to reassure him more, and more often, for a while, that he (Harry) is still a good boy, still loved. But I bet Harry doesn't play with Incendio anymore, either. Better he learn it like this, than the TRULY hard way, like those people in the St.Mungo's Hospital ward. A well-written chapter, author. Thank you.
Okay. Now you've made me cry again. I love this story--it's got real depth of feeling. (Sniff.)
Oh, I'm enjoying reading this SO much. It's very poetic, how you have Severus responding to Harry.
