About me:

Hello from good old Virginia! I am new to the Harry Potter fanfiction craze, despite liking the series for over two years now (yeah, I was a late bloomer in that sense).  I guess you could say that I like drama and the hurt and comfort fics best, though I read a lot of other genres as well. My favorite characters of "Harry Potter," are: Severus (duh), Hermoine, Harry, Remus and Luna. Ron is all right, but tends to annoy me.

As stated, I'm from Virginia, and have a Southern twang...even for Virginia standards (I was at work and a customer asked me if I was from Tenessee or Georgia).

I have beta'ed several of other various genres and would gladly beta someone's within reasons.  Obviously, I would beta American English, but I am studying British English and am comfortable with it so maybe later.

Title: Chapter 33: Apple Mania 04 Jun 2010

    Yes, you're forgiven, girlie!

Haha, I bet Mrs. Weasley will let the twins off their punishment now. I know that I would. I wish that the twins had choosen something even more...lasting than that. Perhaps an invisiblity potion so no one would be able to see him-but then again, that might work in Ron's favor-I doubt he wants to be seen by his mum at the moment. Serves him right though, the git! I know he doesn't know pretty much anything about Cancer, but SHESH, it doesn't take a genius to know you don't ask THAT question! So no invisibility potion.

I like that Severus isn't letting Harry get away with lack of manners. He's doing the right thing by being kind but correcting him all the same. I used to work at a daycare and one elementary school-aged child had cancer as a young boy. His mom and dad were hesitant to correct him on manners because he was such a "poor dear", and while he is turning out all right, his little brother, who also doesn't get corrected is a NIGHTMARE! He would throw the hugest fits, and I've come home with bruises, almost a complete black eye from him throwing things at me. I'm glad that I don't work there anymore (I quite and then one month later it got closed down because of the way the managers were treating the staff-turns out that YES, people need breaks if they are working 7 am to 6:30 pm...but I'm on a tangeant, sorry). Anyways, kudos to Severus!

For some reason, this part got to me ""I'm sorry! I could've cleaned it up," his child looked towards the kitchen, probably to see if he could spot the place Severus kept the cleaning supplies." I think because, it shows how insecure Harry really is-while I read it, I imagined him all panicked and regretful. I can only guess what would have happened if he "dared" to spill something at the rotten Dursleys home. In a way, even though it's spoken, that seems to be another example of showing-not-telling that I'm always messing up on. Good job for you!

Aww, about the applesauce, well apple everything...shall I floo Harry and Severus some cinnamon apple oatmeal? I'll include some apple donuts with an everlasting warmth charm and preservation charm as well.

I have mixed feelings about the new chemo, no doubt that it will work as well as the current, but they are to be more potent. Harry's body was already having a time with the old and milder drugs, so I can only imagine how his body will react now. I have a feeling the side effects (ones that can't be helped) will come quicker)

A question-I thought, and I could be majorly wrong-that in the previous chapter or two (I can't remember if it was chapter 32 or 31), that Severus told him that there was no need for more intrathecal chemotherapy at the time. In the timeline, that would have been said earlier that day. So, what am I getting wrong? Confused, but that's me :-P

I definately understand about the nerves issue. My sister, while never having chemo or anything of the sort, had problems with her nerves. When she broke her neck, the only lasting damage was to the nerves controling her left hand. It was so bad that she couldn' t move it on her own or bend it or stop the shaking. As she is a lefty, that was a bit of a problem. We had her squeezing little foam balls and then even trying to catch them. I helped reteach her how to write again. My mom is the only other strictly lefty in the family, but her writing isn't all that good so she and the physical theropist had me reteach Heather. I'm ambidextrous so I could teach her though she wasn't exactly thrilled about it (a 10 year old reteaching a 16 year old how to write...not her thing)...anyway, I know his nerve issues must be a pain...in both senses.

Ah...another mention of Severus carding his hand through Harry's hair, is this time an intentional mention? I really do wonder how Harry's hair loss will be taken by both. In the long run, hair loss seems to be such a minor thing compared to the other ills of chemo, but it means a whole to some, evidence of how sick they really are. I know
that Courtney was scared stiff when her hair fell out from the chemo. I try to participate in the "Locks for Love" program whenever I can. Have you ever done that?

Just a little note since I know that you like to have people point out errors.

"That's why you have reading glasses!" Hakdjfkdsj " I'm not sure what the Hakdjfkdsj means, but I thought I'd point it out to you. I know that I'd want someone to show me my typos.

Hmm, as to what Severus will bring, let me guess, Apples to Apples *smirks* LOL, I'm just joking, the game wasn't even invented at the time. I think that he will bring some board games though, that seems like a Severus thing. Perhaps some clay/putty to work Harry's hands (another thing that greatly helped Heather), some cards, etc.

Great chapter and I hope you can update again soon, I can't get enough of this story, it's so good! I'm helping out at the Relay for Life event this Saturday and it's gotten me thinking of this story constantly!

Question-Did you see or hear of the movie, "Letters to God"? It's a movie about a child with luekemia that came out in April. I didn't see it, I wanted to and WILL get the DVD of it come November (and the book before then) but the movie looked awesome and used real cancer patients in some of the scenes.

    Til next time, see ya!

    -Autumn

    Author's Response:

LOL I'm sure Ron would've loved a candy that made him invisible at that moment. There's always next time for a harsher trick. ;) For now, he'll have to face Molly's wrath that hopefully knock some sense into him.

I don't see Severus ever looking past things like manners. At times he's verging on the edge of coddling Harry, but I can't see him as the type to spoil Harry or let him get away murder, figuratively speaking. Ouch! You got a black eye from that child? Why didn't you guys tell the parents the child couldn't come back if he was going to keep acting that way?

Yep, Harry's reaction to the spill was an example of show not tell. See how if you choose the right words and actions you don't have to explain the characters, the reader just gets it? That's what show not tell is ultimately about. I'm glad to see you're picking up on examples as you read. It shows you're understanding the concept and becoming a better reader and writer. We'll see more of Harry's insecurities in the next chapter btw. ;)

Can I have the apple donuts instead? When I wrote that chapter I so started to crave one, and I don't think I can get one around here. We don't have a Dunkin' Donuts, only Krispy Kreme. Now I want donuts again. Ugh. lol.

We'll have to wait and see how Harry handles the new chemo. It's more potent, but it won't be running through his system 24/7 either. The intrathecal chemo mention in the earlier chapter meant that he didn't need any more than was already scheduled. It was probably a tricky wording that could've confused you.

Wow, I bet your sister really hated that, especially as a teenager. Hopefully, she didn't take it out on you too much.

Sev carding his hand through Harry's hair was an intentional mention. I'm not entirely sure how Harry will handle it yet. Severus I think is ready and expecting it. I think he'll be pretty nonchalant about it for Harry's sake. The last time I cut my hair I think I got like 8 inches cut off, so close to the length required for Locks of Love. My hair was down to just about the waistband of my jeans when straightened and when I cut it, it was still to the middle of my back. I have problems with Locks for Love not because of them, but about one every two years I get bored with my hair color and decide to put highlights in it, usually blonde. Well, my hair is dark, dark brown so to get blonde highlights I have to use a dye that contains bleach which then rules out Locks for Love because they won't take bleached hair. It kinda sucks because I seriously have like the thickest hair ever that everyone loves except me. lol. I hate it being thick and curly. It takes forever to straighten and because it's frizzy I can't just walk out the door with it wet. They could probably almost make a wig with just my hair. I always joke to people that I'll just cut out a chunk of hair from somewhere in the middle that they can have and that you'd probably never notice it was gone.

Good guesses. We'll have to see what Severus finds.

I haven't heard of that movie, but I have downloaded and watched "Dear Jack" which is a documentary about the lead singer of Jack's Mannequin and his leukemia journey. You can find it on iTunes, and while I'm not a fan of his music, the documentary was a great watch. Parts of it were sad, but he made the best out of the situation. It shows him using a lint brush/roller on his head when his hair was falling out.

Good news for you. The next chapter should be posted sometime this weekend. I just finished writing it, and it needs editing. I don't think I'll make it tonight since I gotta attend to my reviews, but hopefully tomorrow night after I get home from work I'll get to it. The ball is in your court now to get writing. How's SE coming?

    Thanks!

Title: Chapter 34: Lost 14 Jun 2010
Reviewer: autumnamberleaves (Signed)
    Good chapter.

Those coloring stones sound interesting, I don't think I've ever heard of them.

Haha, Severus is ever the teacher, ""Organization is a key to receiving high marks," Severus passed him the next bag; its charmed removed so Harry could see a handful of binders and dividers lining the bag. "A different color binder for each subject to keep your notes and assignments in an orderly fashion." " That part made me smile.

It looks like you did your research for the sizes. Yeah, I'm pretty good at picking out American sizes as well (I guess almost nine years of working at Kohl's will do that to you)

I loved the scene with Hermoine, that was awesome!

This sentence was the best, ""Why do you care?" Harry whispered" I am looking foward to you writing more. I really wanna know and to see the things Severus brought Harry for entertainment. Also looking forward to more agnst. Oh I was wrong before, the child in "Letters to God," has a brain tumor, not Leukemia, the review I read had it wrong. I've since read the book-an excellent read. I liked the return of Harry's insecurities. You are rather good at those cliffies.

    Author's Response:

    Thanks, autumn!

I found those coloring stones while I was looking up kindergarten sized pencils. They look like fun as long as you're not coloring in small spaces. Severus can't help but be a teacher, he's been one for well like 14 years.

Ha, isn't it amazing how you can like look at a person and guess their size? Or how you seem someone take something and you just know by looking that it won't fit them whether too small or too big?

Yay, I'm glad you liked the cliffy sentence ending. It just felt right to end it there.

Title: Chapter 38: Pain 22 Dec 2010
Reviewer: autumnamberleaves (Signed)
Wow Ella, what a lovely chapter. I said this in the little email I sent you but I’ll say it again, to me this is your best chapter yet. It was well worth the wait and I’ll explain as I review what I enjoyed so much about “Pain.”
First of all, I loved the pace of this chapter. I’ve always enjoyed your chapters, but I like how this one was a bit more fast-paced than the others. Yet, “Pain” did not seem rushed and was full of detail, something that can definitely get lost when someone speeds up a chapter. Your’s was perfect though.

LOL Harry would get a long right nice with my mom, whenever she gets really nervous, she goes on a cleaning/ moving things different spree…in High School I finally got her to stop reaggranging my room when I wasn’t home…something about not having my glasses on and going to flop on my bed…and hit the floor since she moved it….lol anyway I disgress….
“"How can you say that?" Harry jumped up and away from Severus. He stumbled, but grabbed onto the table before he fell. "You aren't the one about to get a huge needle stuck in your spine!"” OHHHHH I felt so bad for Harry at that moment, scared to death of the procedure, scared to trust.
"I could be paralyzed?" His child sunk into the chair, one hand tugging at his hair.
A large patch of hair fell out of Harry's hands and onto the table. Harry froze, his eyes fixated on the raven locks.
"Harry," Severus whispered as he approached his son from behind. "Look at me, child."
Harry twisted in the chair to look up at him. A look of disbelief was plastered onto his face.
"You pulled too hard," Severus lied. They both knew it was the start of Harry's hair falling out. He'd been expecting it and mentally prepared himself for it, but Harry looked beyond shocked. "Let's go."”
Well, you definitely pulled my heartstrings there. Poor Harry realizing that if the procedure was done wrong he could end up paralyzed (though I think that’s my department!) to only discover that the chemo was making him lose his hair. I hope he shaves it or something, make him feel a tiny bit of power in deciding when his hair would be gone. Then again, I hope he opts not to get his head shaved for more drama…lol I know I’m contradicting myself, I guess I’m on the fence shall I say. And what a day for him to start losing it, right before something he’s (rightfully!) scared to death about.
“After Harry almost tripped on a stair despite leaning against Severus, the Potions Master had scooped his child into his arms and carried him with Harry protesting the entire way until they were right outside the Hospital Wing's doors.”
Aww Severus is keeping his promise from earlier about carrying him, if I could draw well, I’d draw this scene…maybe I’ll give it a whirl…who knows.
"I want it over now," Harry whined. He didn't care if he sounded like a spoilt brat. He hated feeling confined. It reminded him of all the times the Dursleys locked him in the cupboard and later in Dudley's second bedroom.”
Aww Harry thinks he’s a brat but no, it’s a perfectly reasonable reaction.

"I want to go home," Harry said before realizing what slipped out. "I mean to your quarters."
Severus' quarters were more like a home than he'd ever had. They were the only place that he had a room that felt like his, and the only place he'd ever fully unpacked. The Dursleys didn't count since the clothes and things they gave him weren't really his, but his cousin's castaways.
"It's your home as well, and we'll return home as soon as Miss Adamson lets you," Severus promised.

I LOVED THAT PART! Harry’s subconscious is coming around and he will come around fully I think by the end of this.

“the Professor's free hand cupped the back of his head, holding it in place.” That must have been so hard for Severus to do, to know his child is hurting and is unable to stop it and must in fact let it go on…poor father and son.
“ so intense he struggled to breath. He coughed and gasped, his lungs searching for air. The beeping in the background sped up and a mask was shoved over his nose and mouth.
"Breathe, child." Severus' soothing tone broke through his panic, and Harry coughed once more before inhaling the oxygen that streamed through the mask. "That's it.””
WOW. I’ve already said this but wow, poor Severus and Harry, that’s a really scary situation to be in (I have asthma and have had to have an oxygen mask when my inhaler didn’t work before…Severus had to act all calm so Harry would calm but as he proved a moment later with his voice strained, he was probably anything but really calm.
"I'm so sorry," Severus whispered as he nodded to Miss Adamson.”
Wow…this sentence literally made me cry. First the obvious that he had to ok something that he knew hurt his son deeply even as it helped him and secondly the use of the word “so.” Many people say “I’m Sorry” but it seems to be more powerful with that little two-letter word. Maybe because as powerful as it sounds it also indicates a brokenness.
"I hate you." Harry whimpered. Severus had lied to him. He had said it wouldn't be that bad, but the procedure was torturous in Harry's book.
    "I know."
I think Severus also knows that as much as Harry thinks he means it-he doesn’t. And even if there were any doubts, Severus would still be fighting for him.
“"It's over, child," Severus whispered, needing the reassurance for himself as well as his son.” Another sentence that had me crying…Once again “brokenness.”
"I'm sorry." Severus couldn't apologize enough. The procedure was necessary, and he hated that Harry had to go through it. Furthermore, Severus had learnt his lesson. He'd see to it that the procedures needed, as part of Harry's treatment plan would be done as painlessly as possible. “
I really hope that Harry doesn’t continually hate Severus and think for long that Severus lied to him, Snape really had no idea of knowing how much it would hurt his son.
I really hope that Harry does not wake up to find Severus not there and if he does McGongal tell him where Severus is and that he really had wanted to stay.

Hum…I’ll answer this on FFNET too, but I think what happened to Harry was similar to what happened earlier, being sent a reminder.

    SUPERB CHAPTER!

    Author's Response:

I'm so happy you loved this chapter and noticed the pacing change. My writing technique always shifts after a semester with a new professor and this one showed that. LOL about your mom rearranging your room and you hitting the floor where your bed used to be. My mom rearranges the living room all the time and some mornings I come out of my room and have to do a double take to make sure I'm not still dreaming.

Harry's subconscious is slowly coming around. I suppose his word filter is a little off too considering all the painkillers he's on. You're totally right about the addition of so to "I'm sorry." That adverb changes the sentence completely. The next chapter is proving to be a little different technique wise so we'll see how it reads when it's finished. Thanks!

Title: Chapter 39: Silence Broken 18 Jan 2011

Great chapter Ella. I see what you meant about pacing. I enjoyed the various different scenes with Molly, the twins, and Ron and of course Sev, Harry and Dumby.

That's interesting about the Horcrux. Maybe some good will come out of this bad situation.

Ha, yeah they were both vulnerable in this chapter. :-D

It's good of Severus to mention that if Harry hasn't grown at the conclusion of his cancer treatment, they could talk about using growth potions. That shows that Severus cares about the "small" things too.

"How much could one child handle without breaking? Harry kept testing the limits, and each time Severus grew more worried that one more thing would send his child over the edge."

like Severus, I wonder what will be the straw that breaks the camel's back.

I'm glad that they are talking about personal things as well (the cupboard and other things about the horrid Dursley's.)

I loved the last line, ""Not yet, but I think I'm getting there."" Very powerful :-D

Author's Response: Thanks, aut! There'll definitely be a "straw that breaks the camel's back" but we're not there yet. This next chapter I'd say is an emotionally turbulent one. Not necessarily in a bad way but since it was written over the course of a few months it reflects my varied moods.

    Great job Ella!

Well, as I wrote a looooooooooooooooooonge review on your live journal, I'll try and keep it shorter here-it took a couple of HOURS to organize my thoughts and type your review on lj.

I was glad to see this chapter. You did a fine job of handling Harry's hair loss. As I mentioned in your live journal, I was pleased to see the little details in your writing (the keeping a lock of hair, the rounded face from steroids). That's one thing I've always admired about your writing, even in early chapters there were a lot of little details that made it real. Like in one chapter you mention Harry is allergic to latex.

I look forward to your next chapter!

aww I liked this chapter a lot! It says a lot that Severus let Harry use his holister.

Lupin is a git. I like the character but as with another reviewer, I'm pondering if I like him better as a rug!

This is a response to the "Wheelchair" challenge issued by RonyaThiefheart. "After the Final Battle, Severus (still teaching) is paraplegic and needs a wheelchair and a caretaker."

What's in a name? The-boy-who-lived, prophesied defeater of the Dark Lord, son of the supremely intelligent Lily Evans and talented James Potter, Golden boy of Gryffindor, part-time punching bag and house elf of the Dursleys and the bane of Severus Snape's teaching career, Harry's used to labels. Who would want Harry when they can see instead whoever they like instead? Having never been entirely sure who he is makes him a little too open to suggestion though and unfortunately for him, Umbridge wants to banish his old list of names and create a new one of her own.
Beneath the names others have branded him with will anyone be able to find Harry?

Great job there! My favorite moment was right at the end, "If anyone had been awake at three o’clock that Thursday morning and had thought to look out a window their friends would certainly have thought them lying, because who would believe that Severus Snape would hold Harry Potter; cradling him close to his chest with concern written in every line on his face even as impassivity fought to take back control, moving with strides that would put his usual speed to shame as he headed up the snowy slope for the doors to the castle, a house elf hurrying in his wake." There was something so...bone-chillingly excellent about that. I was also glad that Snape made it out of Voldy's clutches relatively all right. Now he can focus on Harry. Great job again and I hope you update soon.

    Author's Response:

    Oh Thank you!!! ^^

Bone-chillingly excellent, I have to stop grinning sillyly... which is so a word... before mum think's I've lost my mind ^^ and lots of points for helping with that, I did enjoy writing that but (dont you love it when your writing connects itself on its own? ^^)

Thank you so so much! *muffins and points and cookies for you!* ^^
