Third in the series Days We Learn From. In a darkening world where the war looms ahead, things couldn’t be more wrong. A new hand has been dealt out, and now Severus isn’t well, and this he knows. But what is it that is causing the fainting spells, and how long can he keep this a secret from his two adopted sons, Harry and Draco? More importantly, with the Dark Lord still furious over the discovery of Severus as a spy, how long can the little family continue to escape his clutches?

Title: Chapter 15: Attack of the Teenaged Girls 11 Feb 2012

Oh no, poor Sev! Forced to go to the ball... well, after seeing "Goblet of Fire" and the Yule ball scene, I always wondered if he had danced with Sinistra or not - she looked so hopeful, standing next to him ;)!

I really liked the contrast of the scene with Albus (very nice writing wrapping that up, by the way!), and the scene with Harry. By the way, Harry - get over yourself, all of the other boys would kill to be in your place ;)!! Lovely chapter, once again a great balance of angst and humor.

Looking forward to more (maybe the ball?)!

Author's Response: Glad you liked it! Yes, silly Harry. I dunno though ... Romilda Vane can be terrifying. As for the ball, Christmas holidays have to come first. Thank you for the review Sita!

I really like how this chapter turned out!
I was kind of nervous when I realized what Sev was planning to do, but you explained his motivation very convincingly; he really needed to do it.
I loved to hear his side of the story; it made so much sense. People who join fascist or terrorist organizations are often (though not always) from disadvantaged backgrounds and easily fall prey to the promises of belonging. And I liked that Sev has enough distance to recognize why Lily would be so final in her judgment.
Loved this chapter (for some reason, I giggled really hard at the image of Dumbledore pulling Snape up by his collar ;) )! Looking forward to more soon!

Author's Response: I am so relieved you liked it. To tell the truth I didn't want to write this scene, but it occured to me that it would hurt Harry not to know, and seeing as what is happening to Severus, he would feel he need to tell him. I'm glad you thought the motivations were good. I also snickered when writing about Dumbledore dragging Snape up by the collar, so I'm not surprised someone else found it sort of funny.

I really enjoyed the scene with Hagrid. I can see him being friends with Severus; he's not the type to judge people. And the line about life experience is very true.

Draco and Harry must be scared, after this first reminder of the reality of what is coming. I really liked how you described that, and also Severus' thoughts on his situation.

Still, I'm not giving up on my theory :)! Looking forward to more!

Author's Response: I'm glad you liked the scene with Hagrid, as I really enjoyed writing it. Yes, while Severus has had the constant reminders, Draco and Harry have not seen him faint again. Glad to see you're still optimistic. Well, thank you for the review Sita! It was nice to hear from you.

Title: Chapter 18: Winter Sun 26 Feb 2012

This chapter made me feel melancholy for all its festive cheer. There's so much caring in the way Sev and the boys interact, and yet it seems likely that they'll never spend another Christmas together.

I also liked the interlude with little Severus and his parents. They seem to genuinely care for him and one another, but there are hints that the issue of magic and Tobias' drinking will eventually drive them apart.

Great chapter!BTW, I want to see Severus' baby picture, too :).

Author's Response: Glad you liked it. Belive it or not, i tried to make thIS chapter nothing but cheer, but I just couldn't do it, you know? There's just too much going on for all of them not to have a little bit of darkness creeping up behind. So much in their pasts, and so much in looming off in the not too distant future. I'm relieved you liked the interlude with Severus' parents, as I wasn't really sure what people would think of it, or even how I thought about it. It just sort of crept from my head when I was writing this chapter, and even after about two months of debate on whether I should keep it I still was unsure when I posted this. So thank you for mentioning that. Thanks so much for the review, and, as a side note, I too want to see Severus' baby picture! But then again, I'm pretty sure Minerva would as well! ;)

Title: Chapter 19: He Is Waiting 03 Mar 2012

I don't hate you, of course not :) - but, what a twist! I never expected something like this to happen. The first part of the chapter was so quiet, and then suddenly all hell breaks loose. Very well done!
Poor Draco, though... what with Sev's illness and the Slytherins, he's had enough to deal with already. Well, I think I know what'll happen next (and you foreshadowed that very nicely in Sev's conversation with Molly!)
Now, don't leave us hanging too long :)!

Author's Response: Hmm ... well I suppose you will see if you are right about your theory soon. :) I'm quite happy you found the contrast between the relaxing beginning of the chapter and then the, as you said it, the ending of all hell breaking loose. Thanks so much for the review Sita!

Title: Chapter 20: The Traitor's Lament 10 Mar 2012

Wonderful chapter, Whitetail! I loved Severus' argument with the Order, and the underlying resentment on both sides. They still don't quite trust him, and Severus senses this and reacts accordingly.

The second part with Harry was depressing, yes, but very well-written! Their reactions were perfectly believable, even though it's sad to see how little hope Severus has left. He seems to have decided that turning himself in is the only option.

Now, don't leave us hanging for too long :)!

Author's Response: I am quite relieved to know that you thought the reactions were believable, as I spent a great deal of time on them and tried not to make them too overblown or too mild for the situation. Glad you liked it Sita, and don't worry, I won't leave you guys hanging too long. Thanks so much for taking the time to write a review!

Title: Chapter 21: The Verdict Reached 15 Mar 2012

Sev, nooo! Well, I knew he was going to, but still... that final scene with Harry was heart-wrenching, but I'm glad Severus decided he had to tell Harry what he was doing. I don't think Harry could have dealt with it if his father had simply disappeared.

I really liked how Molly watched him go, and didn't stop him. She of all the Order members would understand what he was doing.

Kudos to you for writing such a riveting, emotional story; I'm looking forward to every single chapter! And no, *still* not giving up on my theory ;)...

Author's Response: Thanks Sita! I'm glad you're looking forward to the chapters so much, and that you liked Molly's reaction. I thought that it fit well, considering what sort of character she is, you know? Oh yes, and it is nice to see you're still hanging onto your theory. You certainly will have to tell me if you are right!

Title: Chapter 22: A Ruined Road 20 Mar 2012

A fox! I love it! And a black fox, too... yes, I agree, it's a good Animagus form for Severus :). Foxes are great!

I love how you described the episode in Malfoy Manor; not too graphic, but still intense enough so that Severus' pain and fear felt very real.

At first I thought it was Arthur Weasley who had found him, but Sirius would be a lot more fun, of course... wait till he learns that he petted the 'greasy git' and called him 'little guy' ;)!

As for Severus transforming back, I have a feeling that it might not be that easy - or that his Animagus form might help in some way to cure his illness (that was basically my theory ;) ).

Looking forward to the next chapter!

Author's Response: Good to hear that you appreciate Severus' animagus form. I had it in my mind for at least a year plus that he would be great as a black fox, and had yet to work it into a story. I'm liking the speculations, as I do love hearing theories. Thanks for reviewing Sita!

Title: Chapter 23: The Lonely Watchman 25 Mar 2012

Great chapter! Yes, I suspected that Severus would have trouble changing back... but I have faith in him that he'll think of a way to reveal his identity even in his fox form! Poor Harry and Draco... it must be horrible for them, wondering if their father is still alive (and probably hoping that he isn't...).
    Looking forward to more :)!

Author's Response: Yes that would be horrible, and I suppose Harry and Draco might just be hoping that he isn't alive, what with the way Voldemort treats his prisoners. Anyway, thank you for reviewing, and I am glad you liked it!

Hehe, Chicken Run featuring Severus Snape :)! I loved that scene, and Molly's outraged reaction.

Minerva!!! - I'm sure when he's back to being human, Severus will never let her forget that she didn't recognize him. How frustrating it must be to be right there, but unable to talk. Hm, maybe he could try to write something (with his paws on the floor)?

I also liked that Severus doesn't enjoy all aspects of being a fox, like doing his business outside and being treated like a pet. That seems very realistic and in character for him.

Another great chapter, thank you for the regular updates we're getting!

Author's Response: Oh Chicken Run ... I quite like that comparison! I'm glad you thought he's stayed in character as a fox. I think he would find a lot of it infuriating too. Thanks for the review Sita, and you're quite welcome for the regular updates! I've had the whole story finished for ages, so that's why the updates are coming so consistently.
