Title: Chapter 33: Chapter 33 Angst, Oblivion and Regrets 02 Jul 2015
Reviewer: teriwright (Signed)
I am so incredibly disappointed in Ginny. Yes, I totally understand Her Body, Her Choice and agree with it as well as the notion of supporting a friend through a decision that you don't agree with. That's what friends do. But there are consequences to every decision and relationships don't always remain the same afterwards.

Is this how Ginny going to deal with her problems for the rest of her life? "Oh, I don't like feeling grief or anxiety and I have a game in two weeks, let's just obliviate it away". It's like a crutch. She'll be a perpetual child the rest of her life since she refuses to face problems head on like an adult. I noticed throughout the story that she was in denial and refused to face her emotions stemming from the war and didn't have much sympathy towards others who were dealing with their problems head on. She won't be able to understand, sympathize or help Harry or anyone else in her life that's suffering. Her advice will be to just erase the memory or live in denial. I don't see her as a compassionate person.

The Healer was also bordering on unethical behavior in pushing a vulnerable patient that obviously can't make rational decision at the current time. I would think there would be at least a 24 hr waiting period before performing such a spell.

I don't see this relationship between harry and Ginny lasting long term, especially after her disparaging comments towards Harry's struggles during the summer. Completely ignoring the fact that he overcame them. But, I know I'm projecting my own attitude towards this relationship so take my comments with a grain of salt. I just don't like the girl. I don't see what Harry sees in her, nor what she brings to this relationship besides demanding everything her way like a child. What am I missing in this character?

A great chapter with some thought provoking issues, both in terms of the Obliviate discussion and romantic relationships. Very well done.

    Author's Response:

I sympathise with your dislike of Ginny, because she really lets Harry down here, taking the easy way out. This is how I see her character: on the one hand she is a spoilt child. Being the only, longed-for daughter of Molly Weasley she is bound to have been coddled and humoured to a great extent. On the other hand, having six older brothers, she has certainly developed a tough, tomboy side, learning - too well perhaps - to put her feelings aside not to become a sissy in her brothers’ eyes and risk being left out from their play. Not to provoke her brothers’ contempt by showing weakness might have been very important to the little sister.

I believe that Ginny might be quite funny to be around, being spontaneous, straight-forward and lively. She is also beautiful, with that naturalness that would be rather sexy. Harry, once he has formed a strong bond with someone is not likely to let go or forget about her - I guess he really loves her.

Naturally this decision of hers to allow herself to be Obliviated is disastrous and in the long term, even with the aid of magic, it should be impossible to postpone the necessity to deal with the traumas of life…

Whew! I totally overlooked the legal aspects of Ginny's Obliviation. What a potential horrendous error. I guess this would be a good reason to prevent Oblivations against the wishes of the patient: when there is a current legal case in progress and the patient is a witness. The Judge was also correct: Snape had too many conflicts of interest and Steadfast totally botched the investigation.

I enjoyed the questioning of Harry in that many issues were brought up. The Priori Incantatem was much more fleshed out than in canon. I didn't enjoy the questioning while Harry was so debilitated. That was just cruel and callous. LOL, very gov't-like.

People and societies are flawed and it can be very interesting to read with the right author. I don't need to add that you are one of those authors.

    Great chapter as always.

    Author's Response:

Thanks, that was really nicely put of you, Teriwright!

There are several major objections abainst the Obliviate spell, as I'm trying to illustrate in this story. I always thought that it was rather carelessly used in the original novel...

I’m having some issues with the coming chapter, so it will be a bit longer than usual before I update... but I will be back :-)

I''m happy to read an update to this story.

question: couldn't snape resign as headmaster in order for DD to be able to testify? If DD's portrait is no longer bound to be loyal to Snape as headmaster, then his testimony won't be suspect correct?

Author's Response: Er *blushes* I didn't think about that, in all honesty. *Trying to make something up* Maybe that loyalty works as a lifelong immunity against critique, sort of, and that people will end up not trusting the portraits anyhow...?

[Christmas Special 2014] One Christmas Eve, after a particularly unpleasant Occlumency lesson, Severus is visited by a ghost. Lily is furious over how he has treated her son—and determined to make Severus see just how much Harry needs him. Loosely based on "A Christmas Carol".

I think the way you are comparing and contrasting Snape and harry's lives with such jarring scene changes really drives home the point Lily is trying to make.

Harry coping with the pain of his connection to Voldy due (in part) to Snape's abuse is powerful and heart wrenching. There isn't a lot to be said really other than acknowledging that it didn't have to be this way and that is rests mostly with Snape's actions - and inaction's in this case.

well done, can't wait for more!

Wow! Lily did a great job. Severus is all on his own now with no advice from Lily. I can't wait to see what his first step is towards Harry. Please update again soon!

I don't know if I've reviewed this chapter already or not, but just in case: I loved it!

The last line was perfect. What else could he do but sit down and weep? There must be decades of emotion to come flooding out after Lily left.

What!? This is it? Gah! I totally enjoyed this story and sincerely hope it's continued.

The only plot I can imagine is that of Sev and Harry's relationship. Or more specifically, how Severus can possibly atone for the damage and pain he's caused. (Breaking Harry's spirit as well as attempting to break his mind) Perhaps help Harry heal as well as protect him from those wishing him harm (Voldy, DD, Dursley's, The Ministry, The Press, The students, etc)?

Harry has been hurt so much for so long that it isn't something that easily fixed, or fixed at all. You've created quite a damaged Harry if he's already on the verge of suicide. Quite the uphill battle.

It's not like a snowglobe will fix everything or instill any sort of trust. It won't even open the door a crack since harry probably - rightly given his history with Snape - will think it's a trick or a lie or some manipulation.

Maybe a plot could be Sev vs DD. We all know DD see's harry as a means to an end, not as an actual person deserving of love, happiness, safety and protection given his actions (and non) towards Harry. I will admit I'm biased negatively towards DD and haven't read any credible fanfic that can legitimately excuse his cruelty and negligence.

Another plot could be exploring the effect of Snape's no longer spy status on Slytherin House. LOL, Will Severus finally crack down on sabotage in potions and quit protecting the bullies or will he still show favoritism toward them? Both? I can imagine quite the uprising in the Snake Pit. I can also imagine the implied Green Light those that have suffered under Slytherin and Snape will see it as and attempt to get their own back. Chaos naturally.

Hmmm....I think those are all the plots I can think of for now.

Still, I hope to read more of this engaging story.

After the events in 'Visions', Snape, Sirius and Harry have to figure what they mean to each other. Returning to a normal life may be more difficult than they expected, but they all need to get their act together before Voldemort gets the elixir of life.

I just stumbled upon this story and Visions and I'm captivated!

The happiness and angst are so well done. Harry, Sirius and Severus are all broken and I can't wait to see if/when they can be healed.

LOL, I love Severus's awkwardness with pauline.

They had it all wrong...wrong enemy...wrong way to win a war...everything was wrong and once again it was all up to Harry as he is forced to go back in time, stuck in his eleven year old body with a fully grown mind...can he get it right this time because there is no second chances this time around...and there is no one to turn to...

I always gravitate towards stories that can weave reasons and methods to Riddle's madness. I really look forward to more!

When the saved hates the savior, magic demands justice and forms a slavery bond. Severus has saved Harry's life one too many times and the bond has formed, beyond anyone's power to dissolve.

You know, I'll bet that Sirius isn't the only one whose Harry's opinion of has suffered. Can you imagine what Harry must feel about his father now? Not the sparkling hero everyone said he was is he? And to a lesser extent his mother and even DD. Lily had to have know or at least suspected something but didn't lift a finger to investigate or influence her husband. DD can't claim he had no power to influence James or Sirius and should have taken more interest in the welfare of his student and later on spy. My cynical side thinks that DD thought it was a great idea to force Severus into the DE ranks against his will and probably didn't put up that much protest or look too deeply into how Severus was treated.

Thinking more about this as I write, I'm sort of shocked that Severus is still even in Wiz UK after James's death, let alone loyal to DD. If it were me, I'd have left the moment James died. Basically a big F-U to Wiz UK. What exactly has DD done for him to earn that sort of respect or loyalty? He allowed the bullying that created this hatred and the increasingly violent "pranks" by the Marauders that resulted in a slave bond. A cynical person like myself would even say this slavery bond was possibly engineered by Potter and Black. They are cruel, entitled Purebloods who would have known about this magical phenomena. Just to see if they could you know?

I sort of hope Sirius is captured and given the Kiss...after several months of crippling guilt. He's a rapist and torturer. No better than a DE really. Actually worse than what DE's got up to in canon. I don't know if he really has a place in Harry's life. But there's my cynical side hijacking my comments :-)

I'm imaging Harry's reunion with his parents after he's finally granted the sweet release of death. I suspect Harry wouldn't be all that impressed with them. Perhaps even ashamed to be James Potter's son. I just can't imagine that he'd feel any sort of Love towards James after learning what he did and was unapologetic up to his dying breath in his actions towards Severus.

    Author's Response:

In my mind, Dumbledore asked James to be nice to Snape, and James didn't comply.  True, Dumbledore could probably have done more, but he made some attempt at least.  And you're right, he would have approved the notion of the spy, but I think one reason why he would have would be that as soon as it was brought up, Snape was hell-bent on doing it.  If he spied, there'd be some evenings when he'd be away from Sirius, so it was in his best interest to be the spy.  Seeing Snape's genuine desire to execute that plan, Dumbledore wouldn't have opposed it too much.  (Though, even if Snape begged not to, I can't see Dumbledore listening.)

That being said, who was the one who showed Snape any mercy?  Who was the one who was there when James was killed?  Who kept Snape out of Azkaban?  Offered him a job and safety after the fallout?  Dumbledore could have done more, but even so Dumbledore did more than anyone else.  Who else does Snape have to be loyal to?  The Dark Lord isn't gone, and he's got to hang around to see to it that he doesn't come back.

I don't think Potter and Black engineered the bond, but James was aware of what would happen before he saved Snape, and didn't stop.

I will keep your desire to see Sirius kissed in mind when writing future chapters!  I was already playing with that idea.

Yeah, Harry's opinions of James have been rather shattered.  Yes, Lily did suspect, after the marriage.  I think she bares significantly less blame that James though, and certainly less than Sirius.  What's the adage?  "Evil prospers when good men do nothing"?  But, to be entirely fair, you don't know yet what Lily was up to.  You've only seen the world as Snape sees it.
