Being an ex-spy makes fatherhood difficult for Severus, and his son Harry knows this. Therefore, Harry has never been surprised that his father has talked so little of what happened during the first Wizarding War, a time when the Ministry of Magic still refused to believe he was acting on Dumbledore’s orders. It is a silence Severus has been able to keep without question, but when Harry discovers an old trunk of his father’s, he finds in it something Severus had never intended to see the light of day - a muggle war medal. No longer can Severus keep his past hidden, and no longer can he shelter his son from the reality of what happens when one war bleeds into another … the truth of where traitors go when Azkaban is full.

Title: Chapter 2: S.T. Snape 20 Aug 2013

    Hi,
Lucky for Harry that Severus seems to be a supportive and understanding father, else he would be in great trouble. Although I still think a mild parental lecture is warranted for invading his father’s privacy, not to mention sharing the information learned with Hermione. But then again, perhaps learning the truth (or most of it) may lead to a deeper understanding and result in a lesson learned, so there’s no further lecture needed. (But that’s just me rambling, I hope you don’t mind.)
Anyway, great chapter, I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. It also got me pondering how much – quite contrary to canon – Severus would hate it to be called brave. I can’t imagine the amount of pain the Victoria Cross evokes along with all the cruelties of war, but I also can’t wait for you to keep unfolding them.
Well, it’ll be an agonizing week till your next update. :)

Author's Response: Hello Annora! Hmm, yes, a reprimand would have been good. I admit I did not think to throw that in - I was so focused on the story! Glad to hear you enjoyed it! Yeah, war medals are such a mixed back. Some want them, others want nothing to do with them, or at least from people I've talked to. Cheers!

Hi Whitetail! -- First and foremost thank you for posting this story! Even with the preliminary info (this line in particular: ”So I became a soldier in my mind, throwing an imaginary character I knew and cared for into the place I could never go. I explored it. I lived it, I breathed it for months. I dreamt it. I had to see why ...”) and the first chapter you’ve given me so much more than words… you have no idea. Apart from actual, personal military experiences, I think most of us have inner battles and writing and/or reading can be an excellent way of healing ourselves – or others that are willing to be helped. Besides, delving deep into a wounded hero’s psyche is the most intriguing topic I can imagine.

As for the story itself: I really like the initial set up, the brief glimpse into the summer life at Spinner’s End (a special thanks for Eileen Prince) and the reminiscences of a troubled past. Even at this early stage the story feels real. Oh, and making Severus the narrator, thus allowing your readers to learn his innermost thoughts directly from the most credible source was a brilliant idea!

Keep up the good work, I’ll definitely keep coming back! :) -- Ann

Author's Response: Oh wow, thank you Annora! I am so glad you are liking it, and my little bit of additional info too. And yes, the wounded hero's psyche is fascinating - I have a bit of an obsession with that actually. Haha, and you are welcome for Eileen. She's fun! I just wish I could incorperate her more than just every so often. I am also pleased you liked Severus being the narrator. I felt he needed to be, and in first person like that.  CAnd more shall come for you to read as long as you wish to follow along! ;)

Amazing chapter again, I enjoyed it a great deal! :)
Also noticed a bit of a literary symmetry between Severus finding the photo album and Harry finding his dad’s merit badge earlier. I don’t know if it was intended or not, but I think it’s pretty great.

I also hope you’ll unfold Miss Crandall’s story a bit more.
Oh, and one more small thing I like: Salazar’s remarks, as they’re both entertaining and meaningful.

Author's Response: Hey Annora! It is so great to hear that you enjoyed it. The scene with Severus and the photo album was meant to be slightly similar to Harry's discovery, so it is nice to know you liked it. Oh Salazar! He's been so fun to toss in from time to time - good to hear he's appreciated! As for Miss Crandall, she will show up again. Cheers!

A captivating chapter, and definitely my favorite one so far!
I think all the thoughts and feelings you depicted were perfectly sensible coming from a man who had recently lost his wife. So was the fact that Harry seemed to be absolutely excluded from his mind.
I’d gladly write more, really, but I’m afraid I’m left speechless…

Author's Response: Howdy Annora! I am very glad you enjoyed the chapter, and felt that the emotions were accurate. Just knowing that you're speechless says enough. :) Thank you for reviewing!

I wonder who is waiting for Severus with Harry? :) I’m so looking forward to more, especially Eleanor’s backstory after all we learned about her and her family in the previous chapter. A reunion between Severus and Ben would be beyond exciting.
This chapter was amazing, too. So many heartwrenching and heartwarming lines, and it’s always a pleasure to have Eileen and her wise words back.

Author's Response: Ah yes, I do love writing Eileen. I only wish I could throw more of her in here! And Tobias too. I have a lot of backstory with him and Severus - enough that I could probably make an enitre follow up just between Tobias' death and Severus returning from his war. But alas ... I probably won't. I am glad you are enjoying Eleanor - you shall hear about her somewhat. I quite agree that something like a reunion would be a great deal of fun. Thanks so much for your review, Annora, and your kind words. You definitely made a Monday better! :)

Really enjoyed the chapter, it’s always interesting when a private person opens up. However, I might disagree with Ben about suggesting Severus should see a mind healer. I think in his (and Ben’s) case - just because they shared the same experiences - a friendly conversation could do a lot more good than a session with a therapist.

Author's Response: Hello Annora. Great to hear you were glad that Severus opened up a bit. Hmm, I can see what you mean to some degree about Ben's suggestion. The way I see it, however, is that Severus still has a lot of adverse side effects from his experiences, and while Ben's been through a lot of the same, advice from someone with an entirely different perspective might be a good thing. I think Severus needs a bit of both - support among friends and family, and a little support elsewhere, which might give him a bit of a different perspective on some of it. Anyway, that's my reasoning, and who says Severus will take Ben's advice! He is stubborn, and Ben only suggested it because it was good for him. It's good to hear your thoughts on it. :) Thanks for reviewing.

Hi Whitetail! Amazing last chapter -- what a solemn, bittersweet and powerful way to end this great and quite exceptional story! Thank you for writing and sharing it!

Author's Response: Thank you so very much for reviewing, Annora. I am pleased that you found the ending so powerful - it wasn't easy to write! You are very welcome, and I would like to thank you for reading For Valour and taking time to review. ;) Cheers!

Title: Chapter 1: Christmas Cards for Snape 06 Jan 2014
Reviewer: Annora (Signed)
This story is a gem. Beautiful and absolutely brilliant.

Author's Response: Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for reviewing! :-D

In the Wizarding World, Father Christmas exists. Of course, not all witches and wizards know this, because only children who would not receive presents otherwise are given a present from the man himself. But when something unexpected comes up Christmas Eve, he’s in the market for two substitute Santas to tag-team his complicated route. Who better to ask than the boy whose name has been on his list almost ten years running, and the man who has forgotten what Christmas once meant for him? Either Father Christmas is crazy to put Harry Potter and Severus Snape on the same team, or he knows something they don’t. One way or another, it’s going to be one heck of a gamble if he wants all the gifts delivered on time. Entrant in 2013 Holiday Fic Fest.

Holy Merlin, Whitetail, it’s a really lovely story! Sorry, I can’t leave a proper review now (I could really use a post-Yuletide timeturner…) but I have to tell you I adore this fic and definitely will be back to read it once again.
On a side note: I think Rain is the most amazing name for a reindeer, I love it! :)

Author's Response: Howdy Annora! Thank you so very much for reviewing! Haha yeah, a time turner would be handy. But one review is a beautiful treat no matter how rushed, at least to me. Glad you liked it. And I rather thought Rain was a good name for a reindeer myself so I am pleased you share my views! Cheers and thanks for dropping a line!

Being sent to stay in a psychiatric ward at St. Mungo’s isn’t exactly the most enjoyable way to spend a summer, so naturally, Harry’s pretty angry when he finds out that’s his destination, regardless of whether or not it might be good for him. Facing a full summer of being cut off from the Order’s plans, Harry’s even taken to envying Snape, because at least Snape knows what is going on. But when Harry arrives at St. Mungo’s and discovers that a fire has changed his destination from the teen ward to the adult ward, everything is turned upside down. Enter his roommate - suicidal, depressed, and none other than Severus Snape. They are both willing to bet that their summer will be a total disaster, and maybe it will be, but even the surest of gamblers are not always right.

OMG Whitetail this story is beyond intriguing! I love darker stories with an amount of soul-searching (and I’m mad about mental health anyway :)), so I really enjoyed reading this initial set up of events, and a peek into the characters’ mind. Feeling like having no purpose… it’s indeed a dangerous situation. Looking forward to the next chapters!

Author's Response: Lol ... mad about mental health. Very punny! I'm pretty mad about mental health too - you know, family members in healthcare and all.  I love soul searching stories, so it's great to hear you share that interest! Thanks so much for the enthusiastic review, Annora! And yeah, feeling without purpose can lead down some pretty dangerous paths *shivers*. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on subsequent chapters. Cheers!
