Being sent to stay in a psychiatric ward at St. Mungo’s isn’t exactly the most enjoyable way to spend a summer, so naturally, Harry’s pretty angry when he finds out that’s his destination, regardless of whether or not it might be good for him. Facing a full summer of being cut off from the Order’s plans, Harry’s even taken to envying Snape, because at least Snape knows what is going on. But when Harry arrives at St. Mungo’s and discovers that a fire has changed his destination from the teen ward to the adult ward, everything is turned upside down. Enter his roommate - suicidal, depressed, and none other than Severus Snape. They are both willing to bet that their summer will be a total disaster, and maybe it will be, but even the surest of gamblers are not always right.

Thanks for a awesome chapter! The conversation with Hermione was spot-on. Great job. And finally! Snape opens his eyes! I've been waiting for that. I loved the way you had the idea of Harry being an abuse victim gradually enter Snape's awareness while he listed the symptoms in general terms. I can't wait to see where it goes from here.
Author's Response: Howdy! You are most welcome for the chapter, and thank you for taking the time to let me know what you thought. Great to hear that you loved the method by which Snape realized Harry's abuse. I enjoyed writing that part. I look forward to sharing what happens next as well!

Beautiful chapter. It was great to see Harry call Hermione instead of hurting himself, and his response to it was very realistic. I can't wait til Harry and Snape talk.
Author's Response: Hi again, Abie! Good to hear your thoughts, and it is nice to know that you feel this chapter was realistic. That is what I am going for, so hearing that makes my day. Yeah, I look forward to Snape and Harry talking too! Cheers!

What I really like about this chapter is that it shows that recovery is not always an uphill process. Often, people falter and take a few steps backwards, and they feel like they never made any progress at all. In actuality, progress is being made, no matter how many obstacles impede the process. Thank you for caring to portray the realities of mental illness, and I look forward to the next update.
Author's Response: Howdy, Abie! I am so glad that you enjoye the stuttering quality of the recovery. I so agree. Any progress is so difficult to achieve. Setback after setback, but that is why it is so difficult to change anything about oneself. I am so glad you feel that my portrayal of Harry's and Severus' illnesses is realistic. I have been working very hard to make it as realistic as I possible can. Cheers!

Such a beautiful, touching ending. Thank you for a wonderful story.
Author's Response: It's nice to hear from you, Abie. :) I'm glad you enjoyed the ending, and the story. Cheers, Whitetail.
Set at the end of third year. Severus overhears Harry by chance on his final patrol before the summer and begins to suspect that the Gryffindor's home life isn't as idyllic as he assumed. Twelve years ago, he made a promise to protect him, and he intends to keep it.

I read this story at least three times on ffnet. When I found it here on P&S I had to read it again. I frickin love this story. One of the best Snape portrayals, and the progression of Harry and Snape's relationship is incredibly realistic and natural. When's the sequel? I know you wrote an interlude of sorts.

This looks interesting so far. It's well-written, and you kept Snape quite in character, if a bit more mellow than in canon. Looking forward to an update.
Author's Response: Thank you, that is encouraging to hear! That was actually (basically) the kind of Snape I was aiming for -- something close to canon, but with perhaps a bit less bite, although I was not sure he came out exactly as I hoped.
