It only took a moment for the world as Harry knew it to crumble. For everything he thought he knew to be cast into doubt. High on the Cliffs of Dover, he'll learn not just about himself, but his bitter old potions professor, and his beautiful rescuer, each scarred by love and loss. Secrets are waiting in the winds. It will take all the hope in the world to bring them to the light.

A year after Voldemort’s death, Harry and Snape have reached a brittle reconciliation with one another. Harry wishes Snape would speak more to him about Lily, but Snape is being stubbornly secretive and jealous of his private life. Harry’s own relationship with Ginny is getting shakier. Hermione has initiated a campaign in the press against Obliviating spells which will have unexpected consequences for Neville Longbottom, and the Auror Office is looking for Voldemort’s son, without really believing that he exists.

In the second part of “Spiral” Harry goes to medical school at St Mungo’s Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries and lives at Grimmauld Place in London with Ginny, Ron and Hermione. As to Snape, he is a multitasking headmaster who seems to turn up ever so often in Harry’s life.

The attack and defense were nicely written.

Interesting discussion on Obliviate. It seems reasonable that there would be side effects anytime a person's brain is being messed with.

    Author's Response:

Yes, I believe it is reasonable, and interesting to think about. Magic can be quite crude and cruel sometimes… Will be following up on this farther into the story.

Title: Chapter 6: Chapter 6 Boggarts 23 Sep 2022

I don't understand why occlumency can be used against a dementor but not a boggart in the shape of a dementor. If Snape can't use his superb occlumency against one, how could he say it could replace a patronus?

    Author's Response:

The way I see it, Dementors and Boggarts are two different magical creatures (or non-beings) which act on humans in different ways. Where a Dementor draws on people’s happy feelings in a strong, but general and progressive way, a Boggart expertly and instantly identifies a person’s single most feared animal or human form, or object, and exerts its influence in a visual, literal way. This is why I think that Snape would be able to defend himself against a real Dementor either by launching a Patronus (we know from canon that he is able to do so), or by performing Occlumency (he will be able to shield his happy memories involving Lily from the Dementor, since they are very important to him and have formed him as a person since his youth).

In other words: with the Dementor it is a mental thing where Occlumency will work (unless, perhaps, if they attack very suddenly, and in large number – I’m not saying that Snape is invincible, and it’s true, he has lived through a lot of horrors). With Snape’s Boggart, however, which is in the very realistic, specific and material form of an accusing Lily, the attack is not mental but visual and direct, and Occlumency won’t work for Snape because the sudden appearance of the shape of Lily triggers his trauma of having lost her, in a different, direct way (as we will see another example of in an upcoming chapter).

Moreover, in this scene, the Boggart Dementor belongs to Harry, and the attack on Snape comes from Harry’s mind, not from the Dementor/Boggart itself. Snape is not affected by Harry’s Boggart, he is affected by the images of Lily that Harry forces upon him - that’s why he can’t get rid of the Boggart when it is in the form of a Dementor. Snape cannot Occlude against Harry in this scene, because he has already spent hours messing with Harry’s mind during their lesson, and Harry is desperate and therefore forceful.

I can imagine that Snape might be able to escape a Boggart by simply closing his eyes to break the visual spell, and tumbling out of the room – but that would not exactly be “handling” a Boggart, would it? In this case, Snape cannot flee the room, because that would mean to leave Harry at the Boggart’s mercy, so Snape is trapped in this scene, alternating between reliving Lily’s death through Harry and receiving Lily’s accusations through the Boggart.

What I wanted with this scene was to give the reader an idea of the extent of Snape’s grief. I believe him to be quite damaged by what happened with Lily all those years ago, and I would say he has some kind of post-traumatic condition. I’m sorry I didn’t quite succeed in conveying this – any idea how I could make it clearer?

I liked how you portrayed Harry's stream of consciousness. Interesting idea of what Severus was defending to Lily - something he should be ashamed of.

Author's Response: Thank you! It was a strange chapter to write, and I realise it must be because it's exactly like you say - a stream of consciousness. It was easy to write the long draft, but I have worked on it quite a bit afterwards, so that it would make sense and not be too incoherent for others to read...

I'm sorry this story is so open-ended. I hope you are writing a sequel. Why is Harry so drawn to Ginny when she has obviously pulled away? Snape could give him lessons on what that could lead to. I liked the birthday present Minerva and Harry gave to Severus.

The year was 1988, and on one quiet Sunday morning in the early days of a blisteringly hot July, the Dursleys departed from Number Four Privet Drive. This, by itself, was of little consequence. They habitually went to church most Sunday mornings. Except... this time they simply didn't return.
