Author's Response: Thank you! If you squint, this can be seen as a prequel to some of my other stories I've not yet posted on this site as they aren't primarily Severus-Harry stories. I can't see Lily throwing James over for Severus as much as he'd like it to be so, and hope he takes her advisc and moves on.

Severus froze mid-footfall. He felt as though he’d had the wind knocked out of him.
"She's my mum." her chin lifted, her eyes clear. "She wrote me that letter to tell me about you. You're the only person she really mentioned, but I guess that makes sense, since you're my father. Who else was she supposed to talk about?"

Each year questions were sent out to new first years so staff could screen incoming students for any potential problems. Minerva hadn’t suspected anything to be out of the ordinary with this year’s batch of students, but she was certainly surprised when there was. Severus Snape wasn’t expecting a scrawny boy to turn up at his office covered in filth and in desperate need of attention.

Severus Snape had a secret. It gnawed at him. It ate at him. He'd never told a soul. Until Harry came to Hogwarts. This is the canon story we all know, but with a twist and a different final battle ending. This is a, 'what we could have been seeing all this time and not realized' story (in a very Potions and Snitches sort of way).
